Welcome folks, and happy “119th Anniversary of the first road trip across the US” week!

In 1903, 2 men and a bulldog named Bud completed the first car trip across the US, from San Francisco to New York. The trip, in a 2-cylinder car, took 63 days, 12 hours and 30 minutes. Now, thanks to modern air travel, you can easily make that trip in almost half the time. The drivers took the Oregon Trail, as they wanted to avoid driving through desert, and no one died of dysentery. You may all celebrate by playing a game with no fast travel.

It’s going to be a quiet few months for super-big releases. The next tentpole event marked in my gaming calendar is God of War: Ragnarok, which is out in November. There will still be hundreds of titles released each week until then, and some of them will be big, just not super-big.

For example, The Sims 4: High School Years is a big expansion for The Sims 4. Up until now, schools were “black boxes” for Sims, meaning that when they went in to school, you couldn’t torture them until they came out. Now, they are fully torturable inside the school! Your teen Sims can pull pranks, spread gossip, hang with friends … or do schoolwork, I guess. One of the new death types is “Death by Urban Myth”.

MultiVersus has big ambition; it’s the latest contender for the Super Smash Bros throne, using characters from the Warner Bros IP stable. You and your buddies can fight each other as characters from Looney Tunes, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, animated DC Comics, Scooby Doo (including that notoriously aggressive fight-haver, Shaggy) and … Arya Stark? While it offers the same general platform fighting formula as Smash Bros, there are some key differences, like no blocking. Also, MultiVersus keeps its focus on 2v2 battles. As such, each character has support skills that can buff their teammate. This encourages you to try for skill combos between teammates. The gameplay looks decent enough too, with a wide variety of skills and playstyles spread across the characters. For example, Velma from Scooby Doo is less interested in fighting as she is in solving a mystery. If she hits an opponent with certain attacks, they drop clues. If she gets enough clues, she can call the cops on someone, and a cop car will turn up and lock them up for a time.

MultiVersus is starting out as free-to-play, and enters open beta this week. All eyes will be on how progression and characters are meted out: can you unlock them with in-game achievements or will you have to pay? Will they put core characters, levels and skills behind a paywall, or just a bunch of cosmetics? So far the devs have assured folks it will not be pay-to-win, but the proof will be in the online marketplace.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a pretty big deal too, out on Switch. It isn’t making any drastic changes from previous games: it’s still a gorgeous, sprawling open-world action-RPG with real-time, party-based battles. The number of party members you can have in a fight has grown from 3 to 7 and you can now switch between party members mid-fight. Xenoblade Chronicles games are long—if you like what this game is putting down, it could tide you over for the rest of the year.

Path of Titans is a dinosaur MMO survival game by an Aussie studio, Alderon Games. The premise is sound—role-playing as your favourite herbivorous or carnivorous dinosaur—but the details are sketchy. We’ve been told it will have all the MMO bones: quests, guilds, home base, even allowing mods. But is there combat? Can you chomp other players, or NPC dinosaurs? Visually, it looks amazing, I’m just not sure what you do in it.

Arsonist Heaven is this week’s pixel-art, side-scrolling Castlevanioid. LootLite is this week’s roguelite with proc-gen levels.

RimWorld is out on consoles, giving couch gamers a chance to experience this now-legendary sci-fi colony sim game. Just don’t expect to ‘win’.

This week it’s a toss-up between MultiVersus and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I’ll go with Xenoblade Chronicles 3 because it’s the type of game I feel I should like—I like similar games, but have bounced off previous entries in this series. Nothing like a guilt GOTW.
