Welcome folks, and happy “370th Anniversary of the first speed limit in America” week!

In 1652, the colony of New Amsterdam (New York’s earlier form) passed America’s first ever speed limit law. The law said that any horses pulling wagons or carts could not be made to gallop. This was the origin story of how “I’m walkin here!” became so iconic. You may all celebrate by playing a game with cool catchphrases.

Steam sales are on this week, so rummage through the bargain bin for some vintage cuts—maybe that ironic paisley platformer or a woolly roguelike. You could get Metal Gear Solid 5 for $5.

Metal Gear Solid 5 for $5 is a lotta cool for a helluva discount. It’s like finding a Matrix trenchcoat on the sidewalk, and all you have to do is clean it. It was Kojima’s first open world, before Death Stranding, and for me it was more fun: sneaking up to bases, stealing all the vehicles and equipment, then kidnapping people with balloons. The maps are awesome, littered with bases and outposts that used the features of terrain they were in, ensuring that no 2 infiltrations went the same way. The environments have an Elden Ring vibe: there to explore and master, rather than skate over between minimap icons. The gameplay loop has an X-COM rhythm, so you always feel like doing one more mission. And every now and again, you get a crazy cutscene or boss fight. The only thing that could top my experience of playing Metal Gear Solid 5 is if I’d played it for only $5.

Cuphead in the Delicious Last Course is a long-awaited piece of DLC. It’s a whole new island with new adventures, new bosses, and a new character that you can also take back through the main game. It promises more of the signature boss fights: tough, frantic, multi-staged, and animated by hand to look like an old Disney cartoon.

In a similar vein, on the Switch and PC, there’s Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. It’s endgame DLC that also adds an island with new Master Rank quests and more powerful gear to do them with. There’s a new Switch Skill mechanic, which lets you swap between loadouts mid-fight. This is for players who’ve already pumped a ton of hours into Rise.

Many people don’t play sports games as a genre, but have that one sports game that they’re really into. A small subset of those people are standing by the road and clapping as Tour de France 2022 rolls into town. The devs have been making official Tour de France games since 2009, so they have it nailed down. New features include race incidents, such as getting sick or plain falling off your bike, and new technology to create shuddering when you go over all those quaint cobblestones.

The Galactic Junkers was originally a Kickstarter game that did a beta on PC, then got picked up by a publisher to take it to consoles. It’s a lo-fi, sci-fi management sim, where you’re running a spaceship. A computer tells you about problems and you give orders to your crew to fix them, ranging from putting out spot fires in the engine room to spaceship combat with pirates. Picture a low-budget blend of FTL and No Man’s Sky.

Outriders was Squenix’s Destiny: an online third-person looter-shooter, but with magical powers turned up to 11. It had horrible server issues when it launched and didn’t catch on as well as hoped. Outriders Worldslayer is an expansion that wants you to take a second look. As well as offering more maps, gear, story, and a new endgame, the devs have polished up the progression and loot systems to try and smooth out that looter-shooter grind. Do the new changes and features buff this game from a 7 to an 8, or merely a 6 up to a 7?

The Legend of Bum-bo, the 2019 deck-building roguelike by the dev who made The Binding of Isaac, comes to consoles this week.

As an Australian, I am duty-bound to mention Ned Kelly: Armored Outlaw. It’s an indie, period shooter that puts you in the shoes and chunky steel armor of 1880s bushranger Ned Kelly. In this alternative history, you start at Kelly’s famous last stand, and your aim is to instead survive it and go on to other levels. The production is very indie, but I will say that its model of Glenrowan, where Kelly’s last stand went down, is quite historically accurate.

I’m as surprised as anyone, but I’m going to give the GOTW to The Galactic Junkers. Cuphead looks too hard, and Outriders is outside my genre comfort zone. The Galactic Junkers is trying to provide a lot of game on a shoestring: space exploration, lots of fiddly tasks and progression systems for your crew, gear crafting, mining, trading, and whatnot. It looks pretty decent if you’re not a stickler for high production values. If the UI holds up, we’ve got a game goin’.

Oooh, been waiting for The Legend of Bum-bo to come to switch!

Played the Hillbilly Doomsday demo, not bad. Definitely retro feel but without the retro scourge of flicker and slowdown. It's only $3.99 for a few more hours, I just don't know if it will hold me.

I have fallen for my own hype here -- Metal Gear Solid 5 turned up on sale on the PlayStation Store and I have downloaded it.

Last time I played it was on PS3! Let's see how it goes on PS5 and if I can push through the long introduction...
