Welcome folks, and happy “233rd Anniversary of the Tennis Court Oath” week!

Versaille, 20 June 1789: 577 members of the freshly-named National Assembly turn up to the Palace for some politics, only to find they had been locked out of the official chambers. So, they decamped to a nearby tennis court and drafted an oath to stick together until a constitution was established. Only one guy refused to take the oath, proving that there’s a bummer at every party. You may all celebrate by remembering that game you played to 99.82% completion.

Beyond the constant tide of obscure PC indies, it’s a week of ports and re-releases. I’m at the final areas of Elden Ring and beginning to see the possibility that I may finish playing Elden Ring.

Sonic Origins is a remastered re-release bundle of the 4 original, 2D Sonic games that came out on the Sega Megadrive: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 - 3, and Knuckles and Sonic. Classic mode lets you play as Sega originally intended, while Anniversary Mode gives you infinite lives and full screen display.

The Shadowrun games are coming to consoles. If you haven’t had the pleasure on PC, these are solid RPGs: isometric, with turn-based combat and good stories.

Capcom Fighting Collection is a re-release bundle of fighting games. Street Fighter is represented by Hyper Street Fighter II. Then there’s Red Earth, Cyberbots, and all the games from the Darkstalkers series. They’re even throwing in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Super Gem Fighter Minimix. It’s got online matchup features and quality of life improvements like key rebinding (even for Special Moves).

Firegirl: Hack 'n Splash Rescue DX is another re-release of this 2021 roguelite action platformer where you play as a firefighter, using your hose to jetpack jump over things and your axe to smash obstacles. The devs have also used the console release as an opportunity to tweak the balance of the game, reducing its brutal difficulty. It could be worth a second look.

AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative introduces 4 new characters to this adventure mystery game. How they will be woven into the story, we do not know.

Also, the adorable battle royale game Fall Guys comes out of its Sony ‘sclusy time and on to the other platforms.

Do you like top-down shooters and that kids’ toy that makes endless fart noises (and manages to be the only toy that never runs out of battery)? Then Captain Diarrhea and The Shartening may be for you.

Meanwhile on the Switch, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a spin-off hack-n-slash game. In the vein of Fire Emblem Warriors, it’s a mashup of Dynasty Warriors-style combat within the Fire Emblem universe. You can play as one of three house leaders, each with their own storyline.

There’s not much to pick from this week—all these games would sit at the bottom of my Pile. Any arcade nostalgia itch I had would be better scratched by last week’s TMNT game. I guess I could give it to Sonic Origins, for giving us one last taste of the purity of what made Sonic Sonic, before the next 3D remake stomps all over its memory.

Shadowrun Trilogy is the latest in a long line of ports that tickles this one part of my brain that excitedly whispers: this is perfect for the Switch! My library is packed with purchases made to satisfy that refrain, and yet so many of them are buried under the weight of juggernaut releases.

Case in point.

My personal Game of the Year last year was Nintendo’s other most recent Dynasty Warriors hybrid, so I have been very excited for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. I find great satisfaction in this style of combat, particularly in building up for a well-timed, screen-clearing special attack before racing across an open field toward the next melee. But it was more the way Age of Calamity honored the world and characters that secured it my top ranking, and I’m optimistic that the same can hold true here for the original cast of Three Houses. Right now, I’m just waiting for the reviews to find out how essential it is to finish Three Houses before moving on to Three Hopes. If nothing else, this may be the firm nudge I need to go back. I’m so sorry, Shadowrun.

Comments

Some good stuff this week after a fairly fallow period.

Not really my kind of thing, but the new Elder Scrolls expansion is going to be exciting for some people, and there has been some buzz about Naraka: Bladepoint, which is a Korean(?) samurai battle royale thingy.

I am in for the Capcom Fighting Collection. I love Darkstalkers and Puzzle Fighter.

TESO: High Isle is definitely the biggest release this week, and looks great, but I already gave it a shout-out 2 weeks ago when it came out on PC.

Not sure why it didn't make it into the list, but Grindstone launched on PC/Steam today and it is 40% off. I guess this is the game's third launch (it was an Apple Arcade exclusive that later launched on the Switch) but it is a great chill puzzle game. If it works well on the Steam Deck, it's a great game to have on there.

Sucked me in last week with TMNT. I think I'll pass on this week.

May get the Fire Emblem thing someday on sale. I enjoyed the last one what I played of it, but never did finish it. I just can't seem to stick with those musou games to the end.

We had a lively discussion about Sonic games in the HOT TAKES thread recently.
