Diablo IV - Catch All

Definitely even more excited for this one after seeing the trailer at TGA 2022 and the additional coverage thereafter.

I just need to see those PC system requirements before I decide if I want it there or on the Series X. The big bonus is that controller support is being supported from the get-go this time so I won't have to make that compromise if I choose to go the PC route. Knowing Blizzard, I don't expect the sys reqs to be insane and it should support a wide swath of modern machines, but ya never know.

I thought I saw somewhere that D4 is the same engine as D2R so if you can run that, you will be able to run D4.

I'll be holding off a few months post-release. Not just because I remember D3's disastrous launch (experienced firsthand), and not just because D3 was quite disappointing in multiple regards once the newness wore off (but the game was meaningfully improved in the months just before and after the release of the excellent expansion), but also because I have sincere concerns regarding how Actiblizz is going to end up monetizing this as a game-as-a-service and I expect that their full plans won't be clear until after the first wave of sales is past.

Yes, I'm that cynical regarding Actiblizz. I think they've earned it.

All that aside, I am cautiously hopeful that Diablo 4 will end up being another excellent entry. D3 wound up being very good after the expansion, and the D2 remaster is everything I hoped it would be, so there's good reason to believe that ultimately D4 will prove to be another good game.

When D2R was being promoted, the developers said it's literally the original D2 with a skin on top. Even on the console version the controller is driving a mouse cursor under the hood. They might be using some of the tech from that in D4, but I doubt it's really the same engine.

D4 uses a new, in-house developed engine that is full 3D with “better zoom capabilities” than the earlier games. That’s all I know.

I was thinking it would be quite the leap to go from D2R to D4 on the same engine. All I hope is that they target an accessible hardware minimum and optimize their game reasonably well.
