The GWJ cRPG Club Main Thread Part 2 - Now Playing Kenshi

Pages

So, hello everyone.

As has been discussed on the Original cRPG Club Main Thread, Our inestimable leader Godzilla Blitz has retired while he's ahead, and I have agreed to take over while he heads off to Deified Status.

I am a very great believer in the maxim, "If it isn't broken, then don't fix it" and fully intend to carry on managing this club - and thread - as it has done so for the previous 4 years. That doesn't mean to say I'm not open to suggests from the membership of course - and anyone else who'd like to join - but I'm fairly sure a great part of the success of this thread as been down to how it's be run. If there are any suggestions or ideas then let me know and we can figure out what we all want to do.

cRPG Club Designs / Branding / Logo

In the last Conference Call Amoebic discussed getting merch created for the different clubs running on the forums. If there a mass consensus that we'd like something for this club then let me know and I'll get in touch to see what I can sort out. Be prepared though, the artistic of you out there might be needed for Logo design!

That's it, I hope you all enjoy carrying on with this club under new management!

Sorbicol.

What's This?
Have you started Baldur's Gate II six times and never made it past Level 4? Well, that's a bit unfortunate because we've played it now and you'll have to pick something else from your steam pile and try and give that a go instead! Mind you all is not lost, there is always the retirement home!

Regardless, if you like playing cRPGs, then this is the group for you! We are a group of GWJers playing Computer RPGs together for the fun of a shared experience. The main thought is that we all have some great RPGs that have been sitting in our backlogs for quite a while and never seem to get cleared off the pile. By picking an RPG that's been out for a while and getting a number of people to play it at the same time, there is more motivation to finish and the conversation about the gameplay makes the experience all the better.

What's currently going on?

We are playing Legend of Grimrock until June 30th, 2023
we are playing Vampyr until March 31st, 2023

What types of games do we play?
1. Role-Playing Games that are at least a year old.
2. Games that are good, relatively inexpensive, and available.
3. Non-Japanese RPGs (there is already a GWJ Club for Japanese RPGs)
4. Computer Role-Playing Games, but console RPGs are not necessarily excluded.

How do we decide on games to play?
• We have four days of nominations and seconding. To be included in the voting games must be nominated by one member and seconded by a different member. Each member is allowed one nomination, and may second any number of nominations. Games nominated must have had their western release at least one year before the nomination month and may not be a game the club has already played.

After the nomination round, we have two rounds of voting.

• First, we have a Pick 6 Round of voting. Each voter can vote for up to 6 games from the candidate pool, in any order of preference. This round lasts three days. The top six vote-getters get carried to the Ranked Voting Round. In the case of ties, we will always carry at least 5 games to the final round, but no more than 7 games. Ties will be broken in a way to send 5-7 games to the final round.

• Second, we use a Ranked Choice Voting system to select a winner from the final round candidates. Basically, you vote by listing the candidate games in order of your preference of play, with the top game on your list your top preference for play. You can rank as many candidate games as you like. (You do not have to rank all the games.) Once everyone has voted, we use Ranked Choice Voting to determine the winner, as shown in this one-minute video. Members can vote without having nominated anything! Vote for stuff you want to play.

If games are tied for first after the Ranked Choice round, we hold a 48-hour tiebreaker among the games tied for first. Members may vote for one or both games. If more than two games are tied for first after the Ranked Choice round, we'll use another round of Ranked Choice Voting among the tied games, so members list their games in order of preference.

How long do we have to play each game?
6 months, but we start new games every 3 months, so months 4-6 will likely be quieter than months 1-3. If you don't finish in six months, you can still finish and get level up credit by posting your progress in The CRPG Club Retirement Home, but it's likely to be pretty lonely in there. Definitely more fun to play with everyone in the first 3 months.

What are the guidelines on conversation spoilers?
For BIG spoilers, please use the spoiler tag. (No! I am your father!) Tactics, strategies, general story progression likely don't need them.

Can anyone join? How do I join?
All are most welcome! Post in this thread with "I'm interested" or something like that and BOOM, your lifetime membership is fully activated. In 3-6 weeks you will receive your secret handshake in the mail. Check for it daily.

How do I level up?
Start and finish a group game during the gameplay duration, go up a level! No penalties for not finishing. Highest level member gets to decide the year's secret handshake at the annual club convention that does not ever happen.

Appreciate you picking up the torch, Sorbicol! So glad you're carrying this forward!!

And thank you, GB, if you're seeing this, for years of fun with you shepherding the club!

EDIT: I have no take on the merch thing. I definitely have zero design sense to contribute, but were there a design to come out that appealed to me, I'd certainly grab it.

Thanks for taking the helm, Sorbicol!

Awesome. Haven't participated much in a long while, but it is also fun just to read impressions from people experiencing great CRPGs.
Thanks to both Sorbicol and Godzilla Blitz.

New thread smell.

Gosh I really should complete a game huh?

Thanks ubrakto and Shadout!

I hope to be around and stay connected, and am excited about and grateful for Sorbicol's reign!

At last - it begins. To continue… whatever. Woohoo level 15

Posting just to keep up, even though I've failed terribly at keeping up.

Just tagging the thread.

Thanks, Sorbicol!

And thanks, GB, for your work over the years!

Was scrolling through my Steam wishlist earlier and remembered it's about time for another RPG!

I had it in my head it would be the end of next month, mostly because I’m a bit stupid and work has been mental.

However, you are quite correct. I’ll get the ball rolling tomorrow.

FWIW I'm also racing over in the strategy club thread to get something together before the Steam sale runs out.

Glad you picked up where GB left off Sorbicol! Godzilla thank you for making this group what it is.

I also need to stop getting distracted by the new shinies

Right then:

Nominations for the next cRPG club game are now open.

Usual format - you can nominate 1 game but can second as many as you like. I will follow this timeline to the final vote. Again, I will accelerate things slightly, I hope nobody minds, but to be honest we've usually got all the votes in after 48 hours so I don't think it'll have that much impact. I can only apologise for a slack start but I've been sold by my parent company and as you can imagine, things are a little crazy at work at the moment!

1. Initial Nomination round to close Wednesday 29th June 9pm GMT.
2. "Pick 6" round (depending on the number of nominations) to close Friday 1st July 9pm GMT
3. Final pick round to close Sunday 3rd July, 9pm GMT - I'll get the results sorted as quick as I can

To start, my Nomination is:

Wildermyth

EDIT: If that timeline is too tight or you don't get on much over a weekend then please say so - we can always extend if we need to.

Seconded on Wildermyth. Love this game but am curious: with its campaign-based structure how will we mark completion on this one? All campaigns? Just a couple of them?

Nominating Skyrim, 'cause right now, for whatever reason, it's the only epic-scale RPG I can think of that kindles an interest in playing right now.

Good question re: Wildermyth. I would say the starter campaign plus one other, assuming people haven't already played that starter.

I'll second Sykrim as I've not played it in years.

Nice! I'm going to think about a nomination, but I have extra time to play this summer, so I think I might try to get this one in, and maybe even revisit one of the older ones that are in the Retirement Home. A Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2 catch up might be fun as well.

I’ll second Skyrim.

Will nominate- Greedfall.

I'm happy the club is getting a reboot. I need one myself. I realize I have voted but not finished (or in some cases, even started) any club games in so long, and I can't believe I only finished two. I need to head off to the retirement home!

I'm currently playing Mass Effect 2, it is a replay for me, but I have never played Mass Effect 3, which I plan to do next. So, I'll nominate Mass Effect 3.

Wildermyth was going to be my nomination, so I'll nominate Wasteland 3

As always, I nominate Torchlight.

With the sequel announced, I'll nominate Dragon's Dogma.

Oh I was thinking about buying Wildermyth on a Steam sale anyway.

Alien Love Gardener wrote:

Seconded.

Sundown wrote:

I'll second this.

So, 24 hours in and we have:

Nominated & Seconded:

Wildermyth
Skyrim
Dragon's Dogma
Wasteland 3

Nominated only:

Greedfall
Mass Effect 3
Torchlight

Still plenty of time to get nominations in. the jRPG club are playing Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark this quarter, and it's been nominated for the Strategy club too. Anyone feel like making it a clean sweep?!?

I would like to please nominate a game I just independently thought of by myself! Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark

Shawnosaurus wrote:

I will second Fell Seal

I'll be playing Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark with the jRPG club so I'll second that here.

Also, my nomination: Star Traders: Frontiers

Something a little lighter that I can also play on my tablet, just in case the Strategy club picks something meaty!

As much as I like that nomination (a game I own that I've not really touched) I'm not sure it's really an RPG? It's more like an open sandbox game I would have thought.

However, happy to stand with a majority decision!
