Welcome folks, and happy “636th Anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor” week!

This treaty, between Portugal and England, is the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world that is still in force. It was sealed with a marriage between King John of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster, and a copy of it is still kept in Portugal’s National Archives. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you make an early deal that sets you up for the rest of the game.

It’s another quieter week, filled with JRPGs and side-scrollers.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a side-scrolling action RPG from Natsume Atari, a dev with a catalogue that’s about 50% mobile games. This one looks like a good Switch game: bright colours, a jaunty soundtrack, and arcadey platforming with combat. Your party members (including a mercenary kangaroo) are different class types—mage, brute, rogue/explorer—with different abilities that help with traversal and combat, and you switch freely between them as you go. You can even use them to set up combos during fights. It also has some very mobile game mechanics, such as town building and doing quests to unlock materials to build said town. The previous Eiyuden Chronicles game was a Kickstarter success story; will this garner as much love?

We Were Here Forever is the 4th entry in this co-op escape room puzzling franchise and is the biggest one yet. You and your buddy find yourselves in Castle Rock, separated and with only a radio to communicate. The puzzle solving requires communication, co-operation, and one player relying on what the other player can see.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Anniversary Edition gives this 10-year-old game a comeback tour. It’s a visual novel with Phoenix Wright-meets-Persona gameplay. You do a few activities in your daily routine, then there’s a murder and you investigate, using any clues you find at the trial as Truth Bullets that demolish witnesses’ testimony. There’s not much new for the Anniversary Edition, except a gallery mode where you can replay key cutscenes.

Source of Madness is another Cthulhu-inspired game. It’s a side-scrolling roguelike with not just proc-gen dungeons, but proc-gen monsters. You wield witchy magic powers, and there’s a mix-and-match element to unlocking and upgrading spells.

Salt and Sacrifice is a sequel to Salt and Sanctuary, the 2D Souls-like. It follows the “Videogame Sequel” playbook to the T: more of everything, plus crafting. You also get a grappling hook and wall jump.

Evil Dead: The Game comes out on Friday the 13th and will give you Left 4 Dead style gameplay. Not everyone can be Ash with his boomstick and chainsaw, though: the other playable characters are drawn from the many versions of Evil Dead movie & TV franchise. You can also play as a demon, with limited power to directly kill players, and more options for griefing them and wearing them down for the normal mobs to take them out.

The very delightful Unpacking is also finally coming to PS5.

It’s another week of nothing that suits my personal preferences, but the Week demands a Game of it, and choose I must. I will go with We Were Here Forever, because the co-op puzzling and OMG moments sound like a lovely experience to share with my wife or kids, and not something that would end in frustration and tears, most likely mine.

Comments

I come here for the history lesson and quips. I am not disappointed.

Salt and Sanctuary was a criminally overlooked game. I had no idea there was a sequel in the works!

The last We Were Here game was pretty good so I'm looking forward to playing this new one.

Agreed! I really enjoyed the first and have been looking forward to the sequel for a while. This one has online co-op too, so I'm quite excited to try it out.

"It’s another quieter week..."
...with around 200 new releases.

I'm on Observation Duty 5

For some reason I'm wary about this one.

It’s fun but I don’t know how long it will hold me. It runs and looks surprisingly good, combat is simple and fun but can get a little too chaotic and sometimes it’s hard to tell friend from foe. The game map is huge but not every location is labeled which can get frustrating when it tells you to go to a certain location on the map for the next objective but you can’t find where it is and drive around aimlessly while the timer ticks down and swarms of deadites wear away at your health and fear counter.
