Welcome folks, and happy “1,177th Anniversary of the Viking Siege of Paris” week!

In 845 CE, 120 Viking ships sailed up the Seine. The Frankish king, Charles the Bald, mistakenly split his forces in two, one for each side of the river, and sent them out to meet the Vikings. After defeating one force, the Vikings simply sailed past the other toward Paris. Back then, most of Paris was concentrated on an island within the Seine, making it easy for the Viking boats to surround it. In the end, Charles paid a ransom of a whopping 7000 livres of silver and gold. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you use money to solve problems but there’s no victory condition for it.

Crusader Kings III: Console Edition brings this awesome dynastic strategy game to the new consoles. This means I will finally get a chance to pour serious hours into it, but is anyone still playing? Who will want to hear my awesome tale of Pope-eating and infanticide that was surely unique to my playthrough and hasn’t been streamed, podcasted about, and digested by thousands of players already?

Also coming to consoles, though it’s not on the list, is the latest Elder Scrolls Online expansion: Ascending Tide. It’s Bretons. It’s pirates. You won’t be sailing the seas, Black Flag style, but there's a haunted shipyard to explore.

Shattered - Tale of the Forgotten King is a Souls-clone on an indie budget. Although the art design is grand scale, you can see the limitations on the graphical execution. For example, no one has feet. The side-on platforming and 3D combat also have some rough edges. It’s the kind of game where you can’t wait to see what the dev’s next game will be.

Agent Intercept is a console port of a PC port of a mobile game. The gameplay shows its mobile roots: it’s on-rails, arcade vehicle combat where you switch between a car, boat, or plane at scripted moments. While it looks like arcadey fun, it has that mobile game shallowness, and cracks start to appear if you play it for more than 10 minutes.

MLB The Show 22 officially releases next week but is on the list this week because people who preorder the digital deluxe edition get four days of early access. You’ll pay through the nose, but at least it’s a tangible benefit for preordering.

Lost Judgment: The Kaito Files is an expansion to Lost Judgment that puts your sidekick from the main game into the protagonist’s chair while the main character is out of town. Where the main character had a graceful fighting style and gadgets to aid his investigations, Kaito has brute strength and instincts; he can even smell clues. There’s 4 chunky chapters of mysteries for Kaito to solve, offering good value for fans.

Catie in MeowmeowLand is an indie point’n’click adventure game based on Alice in Wonderland but with 1000% more cats. There is no speech or text; instead, characters talk in speech bubbles with drawings in them. Does this make the quests easier to understand or as infuriating as Ikea instructions?

Flat Kingdom: Paper's Cut Edition is a console port from the seemingly endless supply of indie PC action platformers. This one’s from 2016 and you can turn into a circle, square, or triangle to do stuff. I get it, 2D platformers are easier for a small team to make, but dozens of this type of game come out every week. Who plays them all?

Dungeons & Dragons: Krynn/Dark Sun/Ravenloft Series is a bunch of re-releases of classic, early-90s RPGs based on 2nd edition D&D rules. These games came out before CD-ROMs and increased processing power enabled the isometric revolution, brought about by Fallout, Baldur’s Gate and Diablo. These games’ UI and presentation are chunkier because they’re more resource-friendly, and could probably run on a smart fridge now: there’s no 3D rendering, information is separated into panelled windows, and there’s a heavy reliance on grid maps. This was all super evocative at the time. Now, I’m not sure I could go back.

Speaking of isometric RPGs, Weird West is one of those, with a fantasy cowboy aesthetic. You’re on the American frontier, but with magic and mythical creatures. The dev team includes alumni from Dishonored and Prey. There are strong, immersive sim vibes coming off of it, with stealth, reactive AI, and multiple ways to complete objectives. The interactivity of the environments goes beyond how many ways you can hide a body. It’s like a mix of Fallout and Desperadoes: crouchwalking around homesteads, creating havoc, and disrupting varmints’ patrol patterns.

The Switch had a big week last week and is still resting. It doesn’t have anything unique this week.

My personal pick is Crusader Kings III, but I gave it a GOTW on its original release. Instead, I’ll give this week’s GOTW to Weird West. It’s an attempt to make an immersive sim on a AA budget, which deserves encouragement if we want to see the genre survive.

Anyone interested in Weird West should check out the podcast dropping on Wednesday - I got to share my initial impressions and discuss the game a bit. The condensed version is it is pretty flipping great and certainly the Game of the Week (heck, it'll probably be a GOTY for many.)

Awesome thanks! Weird West looks great so looking forward to the podcast and game itself. It's going to GamePass as well.

Patrick's Parabox is one of my most anticipated games of the year. A really cool recursive block-pushing puzzle game that has been in development for a very long time now.

I've played Flat Kingdom and sadly bounced out. The concept is great but the way you are supposed to interpret the shapes and their effects just did not work for me. I'm curious to see if this version includes any updates to interface and/or tutorialization but otherwise I would not jump on it. The PC version was on the 2020 Itch.io bundle for racial justice.
