NFL 2022: The preseason pre-draft thread

I gave you the Browns answers earlier. If the Browns aren’t brave enough to say them, they are as cowardly as they are amoral.

Hard Knocks: The Dan Campbell Experience will be coming to your HBO this fall.

Oh, and the Lions. I guess they'll be shown some, too.

Because two seasons of Hard Knocks starring Jared Goff just wasn't enough.

Are you relieved or disappointed that it's not the Panthers?

Neither, honestly. The Panthers might be the most boring team in the NFL, which means they don't make for compelling Hard Knocks content or Sunday afternoon viewership.

Counterpoint; watching the Panthers pretend to be excited about Sam Darnold as their QB might have provided Borat-level awkwardness.

Speaking of awkward, Matt Rhule is getting dragged on Twitter today for his appearance in the photo of all the NFL coaches:

I have no idea who any of these people are.

Front row is easy: Harbaugh the Younger, Rhule, and Sean McDermott.

Top row, uhh... I think second one is Arthur Smith, fourth is definitely Vrabel, and the fifth is probably Brian Daboll. Not sure the rest.

Look at that smug ass McVay. If only Tartt could hold onto a free intereception!

Kyle Shanahan pulling off his trademark tall gawky kid look.

Matt Rhule needs shorter pants or longer legs. Oh, and a quarterback.

Speaking of QBs, the CBS draft analysis comps Checkdown Kenny Pickett to ...

... Derek Carr

Yeah, I'm not really buying that comparison. Pickett doesn't have Carr's arm strength. Despite spending some years in dink-and-dunk offensive systems, Carr's arm power is up there. And finally over the past couple of years, the Raiders have let him throw downfield more, and he's been top 10 in yardage from deep (20+ air yards) passes in back to back seasons. That's what he looked like at Fresno when throwing to Davante Adams. Every draft profile of Carr highlighted his arm power.

Pickett's evaluations, on the other hand, never read like that. He's firmly in that "good but not great" arm power conversation. He'd be a more natural fit for those Bill Musgrave offenses Carr was stuck in early on.

EDIT: I realized that I used a word that may be inappropriate so I'm removing the post. My apologies.

Did anyone post here how each team is being forced to have a 'minority offensive coach' and how that will surely end racial discriminatory hiring practices.

I'll be waiting for my boys Leftwich and Bienemmy to get HC jobs.

To be fair, Leftwich had a HC job, it's just he wisely didn't want the baggage that came with that particular one.

Apparently, we will not have a rule change for the first time since 1966 (!)

Yeah, so, about that...

NFL owners approve overtime rule change for postseason games, ensuring both teams have a possession before the game reverts to sudden death.

Hmm this is an interesting change. The team going second now has the advantage of knowing the outcome of the other team's first drive, but the team going first retains the advantage of going first on an eventual sudden death. There's also the field position issue. The team going first most likely starts around their own 25 but the second teams starting position is more variable. We won't get many observations but we'll see how it plays out.

Yeah, it's clear there's an asymmetry to this, but it's not clear which "advantage" is better. In a high scoring shootout kind of game, the 3rd possession might be the way to go, but in a less frantic game, getting that second possession and knowing your win path might be better.

I also wonder about second possession teams going for 2 after their touchdown, rather than going into sudden death. Are your offense's odds of converting a 2 better than your defense's odds of keeping Pat Mahomes from getting his offense into field goal range for a sudden death winning kick? They very well might be.

The Taysom QB experiment is now *officially* officially over.

The Saints signed Andy Dalton to fill their QB2 spot, and when talking to the press today, Dennis Allen said Taysom will be playing the "F" spot, ie the "move" TE.

Hill is the 11th highest paid TE in the NFL and he has 388 career receiving yards.

I won't ever get tired of mocking the Saints for this, and I know I'll be reaching sympathetic NFC South ears here when I do.

You be nice to Marginally Capable Tebow there, Legion. He's doing the best he can!

Now, Sean Payton, crap all over him.

The only reason Sean Payton wasn't the biggest piece of sh*t head coach last year is because Urban Meyer and Jon "emails" Gruden existed.

I hit Unlike four times so I could hit Like five.

The four posts above might be the best four-post sequence in the history of GWJ.

The Saints subreddit is hilarious; I mean, I knew Saints fans loved Taysom Hill, but the level of optimism there is insane, as if a 32-year-old coming off a major foot injury is suddenly going to be Gronk 2.0.

He would have been the next Gronk already if he hasn't been splitting his time with becoming the next Steve Young.

It's funny that Taysom is quitting on being "Slash" just when the draft is about to give us another Kordell StewUH-OH did I just preempt my GIF draft guide? Forget I said anything.

Hurry up with that draft guide, man. I need to know what to expect how Checkdown Kenny Pickett will look in Panthers' blue and black.

Just think about how much money the Panthers will be able to save by being able to buy Kenny gloves in the kids' section, Enix.
