Welcome folks, and happy “173rd Anniversary of the first-ever photograph of a US President” week! In 1849, mere weeks before he stepped down from his one and only term as President, James Knox Polk sat down in New York City to have his picture taken. Polk was regarded as a successful President by the standards of his time, by which people mean he bought slaves during his Presidency and started a war with Mexico by annexing Texas. He also declared the start of the California gold rush. Yeehaw! You may all celebrate by playing a game where you make a land grab early but it comes back to bite you later.

There’s some news on last week’s GOTW: Sifu is set to get accessibility options and difficulty modes patched in soon.

This week’s biggest dog is really big, like a mastiff, carrying a big open world in its chops. It’s Sony’s Horizon Forbidden West. Aloy is back with the best bow in gaming. The new world she is exploring has a lush variety of biomes: deserts, tropical beaches, wintry mountains, underwater areas, and more. The scenery looks amazing. In fact, whenever I’ve been in a TV store, eyeing a new, bigger, 4K TV (that I still haven’t justified buying), the display models have been showing promo footage of Horizon Forbidden West. The graphics are so good for this game, they are using them to sell TVs.

The first Horizon game, Zero Dawn, was in development at the same time as Breath of the Wild, a game that moved the needle for open-world gameplay. So how has Forbidden West responded? By adding a glider and more climbable surfaces, of course. This kinda sums up the approach, because the first game was a smash hit; they’re not reinventing the wheel here. Instead, it’s an iterative sprinkling-in of “greatest hits” open world features from recent years. So, you will also get a pole caster, which is basically your grappling hook, and there’s underwater exploration (including underwater stealth).

Combat has the same flavour as in Zero Dawn: scoping out mechanical beasties for their weak spots and vulnerabilities, then using your different weapons and ammo to take them out. There’s new weapons, new ammo types, and new beasties. Melee combat has been fleshed out, with a system to charge up for power attacks. There’s also arena stages to practice in. If you watch a preview, the combat looks super complicated with its variety of weapons and ammo (and going to the weapon wheel every few seconds), but the first game did well to build you up slowly. I’m guessing it’s the same here.

As for story and characters, there’s more tribes to meet, a few more big name actors (Angela Bassett, anyone?), and a hint of faction mechanics. Though I’m not sure if there will be faction loyalties leading to story choices. Crafting and inventory have both been refined so you can store your surplus collectibles at camp. There’s also more skill trees, which is good because if you do a lot of side content, you will be rolling in skill points.

So what else is happening this week?

On the PC, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - Inevitable Excess is the first piece of DLC, in case you haven’t poured enough hours into this game already. It looks like a separate place you go, outside the main gameworld, just before the final battle. It’s an additional big battle, using mythical powers, with no bearing on the rest of the story.

The King of Fighters XV is the first in the long-running series to use Unreal Engine 4. It also uses GGPO rollback networking to reduce lag. Otherwise, it continues with the changes made in The King of Fighters XIV, including the Rush auto-combo mechanic. Its new feature is the Shatter Strike, which is like a Focus Attack from Street Fighter IV, and a roster including new fighters and some returning fighters from earlier games.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires first released in Japan last year, but this week it’s ported to all platforms and in languages other than Japanese. It’s the usual Dynasty Warriors template of “1 vs 1000” battles but with some politics and diplomacy in between: building up your forces and increasing affinity with your allies by doing them favours.

On the Switch, there’s Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection, if you want to revisit the trilogy that really put Assassin’s Creed on the map (the first game was more of a tech demo) and if you’re not burnt out on the latest few entries. Ezio’s a charmer, the combat system is classic AC “waiting to counter”. Plus, the games are, mercifully, way shorter.

Horizon Forbidden West gets my GOTW. When you list its features individually, it doesn’t sound particularly special, but they all gel together nicely. There’s a real “I love it when a plan comes together” satisfaction to be had from tracking different beasts, plotting ways to take them out, and using your bag of tricks to pull it off. It’s on PS4 and PS5, and buyers of the cheaper PS4 version will get a free upgrade to PS5.

Here's the list, now in release-date AND alphabetical order!

Infernax and Horizon Forbidden West are definite additions this week. Already started the former and it's pretty dang fun in that old school Castlevania way. The latter will be hogged by my girlfriend for who knows how long, clearing me for Elden Ring next week.

Definitely want to pick up Horizon.

Not sure why BLACKJACK and WAIFUS isn't GOTW.

I think that's the name of Horizon's in game board game so technically it is!

I've already did one playthrough on Infernax (it's not that long) but I loved it. The alt characters are ridiculous.

Looking forward to that!
