Washington Commanders is an unlicensed-video-game-ass name.

They are outranked by the Washington Generals.

That's a better name though since, stop me if you've heard this before, Washington is named after George Washington who is well known as a General fighting for our country's freedom from tyranny.

A Commander is a Naval officer and likely conjures up images of, oh, 18th century British naval forces rather than anything American.

Cleveland gets a tiny pass because the name pays homage to some cool looking statues in the city. Even so...

Their new mascot should be CMDR Bond.

Since this is nominally a gaming site...

I hope that when/if DC makes a first down they put "Right on, Commander" up on the scoreboard. A PA announcement would be even better.

Hue Jackson claiming he was offered money for losses.

Even if it were true, and this is Jimmy Haslam were talking about so it probably was, Hue is so untrustworthy that it doesn't matter. He'll say just about anything to get his name in the papers.

Heh, Hue sure must have made a boatload of money then if true. Per wiki... "had amassed a record of 3–36–1 during his tenure with the team, including a 2–5–1 start to the 2018 season. He also never won a road game during his tenure with Cleveland (0-20)."

Anyone actually from DC should know that THIS should be the official logo.

Not a big fan of the name. They had some great other options out there but as the wise person says "it is what it is".

The pay for tanking thing's going to completely drown out the league's racial bias in coach hiring.

AS this is the NFL thread I will keep this short. I wanted to root for the Spiders, but there were some people in the fanbase who hated the name (I don't know why, arachnophobia?). Guardians isn't a bad name, and the Guardians of Traffic are kinda cool (though I hadn't seen them until this post... problem with not living in CLE I guess).

I think the existence of the statues is the one redeeming part of the name. It may be safe and boring but at least it also references something unique to Cleveland.

Now, can we talk about the ATL baseball team, the KC football team, and the CHI hockey team?

And also my high school:

(Pretty sure they don't use this art anymore, but they still were in the '90s at least).

It's pretty frustrating how even one of the league's few non-white owners is dragging his heels against hiring a black head coach and GM pairing because it would mean firing the league's worst white GM. Imagine how different Baalke's career would be if he were black.

Apparently Tom Brady has even reached out to Shad Khan to vouch for Leftwich.

Well, the racism has long been established.

"You can be racist, just don't bribe Black coaches to tank. Also, don't be late and hungover."

How old is Elway that he's out all night? This is a thing that execs his age and stature do?

He would have been in his mid-50s (he's 61 now). As an ex-professional athlete, yeah that's definitely a thing he'd do.

It would be very funny to me that on his way out, Tom Brady does you a solid.

Older folks need less sleep, which gives them more time for partying!

.

So Pat McAfee's show floated another nickname for Washington's football team: the Commies. Just imagine it: a stadium full of people yelling "Let's go Commies!" Or like how the Nationals have a presidents race, the Commies have a race among Kim Jong-Un, Fidel Castro, Lenin, and Stalin.

Whoah, Jim Harbaugh says he's staying at Michigan, allegedly. He couldn't stand Kirk COVIDs, I guess.

It was all ego stroking from the get go.

Seriously. The Ravens extended his brother, so he probably felt a bit left out.

Vikes expected to hire Kevin O'Connell after the Super Bowl. Brian Flores expected to react by saying, "See?"

Cowboys fans aren't wasting any time. Good for them.

Spike Lee working with Kapernick on a documentary.

NFL is having a great week. It's multi part also.

Another one of Baalke's emergency anyone-but-Leftwich options coming off the board.

I swear this is going to end with Baalke trying to sell Khan on Tomsula.

Well, in light of recent events, Hue Jackson might be a more viable choice.

Sure, if the Jags goal is to have 1st overall picks every year.

It is a poorly kept secret that most of the time American companies hire female CEOs it is because the ship is sinking and the board wants to genderwash the head office to get some good press. It is becoming increasingly clear that a similar mechanism is at play with black coaches in the nfl. Hire the brother to drive the tank. Then toss his discarded body aside like John Henry when he’s done.

It's like they want anyone but the black guy?

Top stories on Panthers dot com at the moment are about the Senior Bowl exploits of Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett. Scroll down a bit, and there's a piece on Sam Howell.

Senior Bowl is being led by the Jets and Lions. Those poor kids.

I think it is good to see how bad it can be to play in the NFL so you can maybe make other choices if the Jets GM says "hey we like you and are looking to draft you". Then you can decide to go play in the XFL (or whatever it is called) and hope for better.

Mike Florio, the former Jones Day lawyer and now NBC sports commentator has been throwing out some really fire analysis of the Flores situation. One observation he made is that the sports bribery allegations are a separate issue and it would really surprise him if it didn't get the attention of a federal prosecutor. As he puts it, it could have already triggered an investigation and we won't know about it until Ross is brought before a grand jury.
