It stopped being random soon after NYT took over. Monday's word is usually easy and Sunday's can be a ball breaker. I've also noticed a tendency for the day after a surprisingly hard day to be easier than usual.

The Wordle editor only started a couple of weeks ago. Until then, the only change they had made was taking out some words that they didn't want in.
