Also noticed that the old URL now redirects to a nytimes.com address.
I was stuck on this for a while too. If it’s any help, when I finally got it, I still didn’t think it was a valid word.
I always see it as a prefix and almost never used on its own.

I had no idea after attempt #2, so I kinda wasted the third one just to see if I could get a green or two instead of nothing but yellows. It somehow paid off.
Pretty sure at least one videogame used it as a suffix for an updated version of a base game.

I was so struggling to even find a word after two attempts that when I came up with one, even though I knew it wouldn't be correct because it had a letter in the wrong position, I used it. Then the first letter could only be in position one or two and the word became obvious.
Hard one today.
Friend of mine said today was tough so maybe I guessed a little different but got it.

I assumed it goes back to the original mastermind pegs of black & white

Agree 100%. Very annoying, but I got it in 4 after seeing the complaints.
I’m glad to hear it’s a hard one because I’ve got all the letters figured, but for the life of me can’t get them into an order that feels like a word. Have we entered the NYT weekend difficulty takeover?

Tough one, process of elimination won the day
Finally got it on the fourth try after recruiting my wife....who spent about 20 minutes figuring out guess 3...which was a word, but wrong.
It did lead to us simultaneously getting the answer a few moments later though.
