NFL 2021: The playoffs thread

I know it was an AFC, so I have a 1/3 shot. I will say West. (I think I would know if they were Central, and East makes too much sense).

Yep. The Bucs swapped conferences with the Seahawks, who were in the AFC after that for some number of years that I don't have time to look up.

For the record, I didn't know that. Just stumbled onto it during my Packers research.

It's totally on brand for the Panthers to pay for QBs who are someone else's roster.

If you’re going to keep praising him, I demand that you refer to him as “former Minnesota Golden Gopher De’Vondre Campbell”.

I hope he gets paid in gold bars if he so chooses.

If he gets a godfather offer from another team then so be it. He deserves it. Same with Rasul.

I'm not too worried any year losing players to free agency because it can mean extra picks. Also it's not like the other teams are operating under no cap. If they over pay for our FAs it means they have less money.

Sometimes the Packers are good at letting people go at the right time. Sometimes Micah Hyde ends up leaving at the wrong time.

Moving on from Rodgers/Adams is daunting but it will also help figure out if Gutekunst + Lafleur are great/ok/blah. A 'elite' QB is great but a GM + coach can last as long or longer.

Wasn't there and 8 and 8 division champion Packers team? Wasn't it helmed by Favre?

Pretty sure they came 2nd according to Wiki.

A 8-7-1 team did win in 2013.... And lost to the 49ers right away in the playoffs.

It's not like the Packers haven't been meh recently. They were 6-9-1 in 2018.

I wonder if the Niners play that draft night clip of Qaaron saying they will be sorry for not drafting him before every time they meet in the playoffs? Seems like easy bulletin board material. Maybe he's always been kind of dumb?

Is #12 available, or does someone need to catch Covid?

Edit: Mike Ford, Jr.! You are either getting a very nice car with a very nice watch in the glovebox or are getting cut and shivved. Your choice!

And he won't even need to stop by my gas station.

If Byron Leftwich gets Baalke canned he's immediately going to become the best coach in Jacksonville's history.

NOT EVEN TROLLING. STRAIGHT FACTS.

The Jags slipped in another head coach interview, with... Vic Fangio?

Fangio, some of you might remember, was the defensive coordinator in San Francisco during Harbaugh's time there, and was becoming a head coaching candidate in his own right, when Baalke chose to instead elevate Jim Tomsula above Fangio to be Harbaugh's replacement.

I would have assumed he hated Baalke, but this feels like Baalke desperately reaching for candidates who aren't trying to get him out, so, maybe he doesn't?

Maybe this is why:

Former Colts’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is being hired as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, per sources.

Eberflus was Baalke's remaining candidate in the Jaguars job hunt. Now he's got nobody left.

Considering which franchise this is, it's more likely they keep Baalke, Leftwich says "Thanks but no thanks," and they end up hiring the worst candidate possible.

Edit: Or not.

What number did Byron wear with the Jags (#7?), or should I just get a #16 Football Jesus jersey?

We've all seen this movie before. They aren't dead unless you see the body.

Leftwich indeed wore #7, and nflshop.com has Leftwich jerseys for sale (though with the Jags' current uniform design, which Leftwich never wore, if you're a stickler about those things).

My old Leftwich jersey is ready to come out of the closet...

Hehehe. It's only 6 in a row. Still want to get to 17 again like the 90s. Screw em.

Oh great. Jeff Garcia stirring up sh*t on social media, criticizing analyst Mina Kimes because she never played football.

Well Jeff you never played in a conference championship game, so you should shut the hell up this week.

Also just don't be a misogynist asshole, no matter what week it is.

Now Schefter is tweeting that the Saints are interviewing Leftwich for their HC job...

Given the choice... spoilers for Legion

Spoiler:

I think Jax is the better job

The Saints have a terrible cap situation and some guy who can't play QB as their highest-paid QB. Maybe Leftwich is trying to get some extra bread and get BAAAAAAAAAAAAAlke out?

Yeah, that sounds like Leftwich getting some extra leverage of his own.

If Khan picks Baalke over Leftwich, I think Jags fans might burn the building down.

Have any journalists reported it, or just Schefter trying to get more eyeballs on Schefter?

MilkmanDanimal wrote:

Other places are repeating it. Though the report isn't that Leftwich is interviewing with them, just that they've requested an interview with him, as well as Aaron Glenn and Dennis Allen.

Given Sean Payton's retirement, it makes sense that the Saints would start reaching out to candidates. I think it's likely, though, that they're going to promote Dennis Allen from within, but they have to make Rooney Rule interviews first (hence, the non-Allen interview requests are both black coaches).

Never forget when the Bucs invited Garcia to announce one of their 2018 draft picks, Garcia went on social media proclaiming he was announcing the 3rd round pick, and then got super pissy when one of the local Tampa sportswriters pointed out to him that Tampa didn't have a 3rd round pick.

Instead of, like a normal person, saying, "ah, well they told me 3rd, it'll probably be whatever their next pick is then", Garcia chose a different path, and in the end, didn't announce any pick.

Welcome new Bears GM Ryan Pace Poles, and head coach Matt Nagy Eberflus.

Monogramming is expensive, and with their cap situation, the Bears can only afford to do one letter between GM and HC.

But hey, if I had a rookie QB that needs teaching and scheming to unlock his talent I would definitely hire a DC as my new coach.
