Felix “We Happy Few” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “246th Anniversary of the publication of Common Sense” week! Common Sense was the pamphlet by Thomas Paine, published anonymously, that called for American independence. Though it was roaringly popular, Paine never saw a dime from it. His publisher failed to turn a profit on the initial run and had started spruiking a second edition against Paine’s instructions. Paine was so incensed that he changed publishers for the second edition. The first publisher, outraged, began working on his own second edition. Both the first publisher and Paine, still anonymous, then ran ads in the newspapers accusing each other of all sorts of fraud. All this feuding helped make the pamphlet extra successful. You may all celebrate by playing a game with a clout mechanic.
It’s great to be back on deck for 2022. I managed to snag a PS5 during the break, and the first thing I did with it? Play Civ6. I was genuinely excited by the faster turns and shorter load times. It may not be as sexy as ray tracing, but long load times were a real issue in the last few years of the PS4, especially for cross-platform titles. I’m tempted to go back to my chuggiest PS4 games and see how they run now. Eventually, I may even play a PS5 game.
Speaking of gaming in the past, that’s what this week offers: mostly a bunch of old games coming out on new platforms. There won’t be long to wait until the 2022 games schedule ramps up. February is chock full of blockbusters.
God of War brings Dad Kratos to PC. Monster Hunter Rise is also coming to PC.
Astroneer is coming to Switch. It’s a peaceful, planet exploration game, kinda like No Man’s Sky, but without any hostile creatures (or any combat at all) or survival mechanics like thirst or hunger. You wander around colourful, low-poly planets, exploring and terraforming to find resources to turn into stuff for your base. It looks like a fun, chill time for folks who can enjoy a sandbox without strong narrative or mechanical pressure to keep you on task.
Battle Brothers is a medieval strategy RPG that looks like a board game. Your band of sellswords is represented by a chit that moves across the map. Similarly, when you zoom into turn-based combat, things are presented with chits and icons rather than lavish effects, although the limited animation on offer is brutal. The graphics are functional without being amazing, but the game shines in its strategic and tactical depth. Every piece of gear has an advantage and a weakness, and there’s a heavy business sim angle to keeping your crew ready for the next job. Travelling the overworld is a matter of having enough food and money to get somewhere, and there’s a lot of freedom to choose what to do. The biggest complaints have been about a lack of tutorials and opaque UI.
As for new-new games, Aery - Dreamscape has you flying around as a bird, collecting memory shards. And that’s about it.
Kansei: The Second Turn HD is a visual, whodunit novel.
Far Cry 6 is continuing its DLC theme of featuring villains from previous games: this time you get to be the guy from Far Cry 4. Gameplay-wise, it’s very similar to the Vaas DLC.
It’s one of those “first week back, easing into it” kinda weeks. Personally, I’m holding off until the big releases later on, but the pick of the bunch seems to be Battle Brothers, even if it’s a port of a 5 year old game. Under the clunky graphics and interface lies a chunky tactical sandbox. GOTW.

I'd actually be tempted to grab God of War and Monster Hunter Rise again simply because I want them on a platform with smoother framerates. However, it's money saving time so maybe when they're not priced for brand-spanking new sales.

"spruiking"? Cave say I've heard that before!
New Picross. I'm way far behind.
How did I live before digital distribution of old, cheap games?

Pretty sure the last one I got was S2.
I pick a new one up when they go on sale when I'm most of the way done with the previous one. Made it up to S5 so far. I tend to skip the mega puzzles, though, since they're just the same as the regular puzzles but with the numbers changed.
As much as I love the idea of Monster Hunter, I probably should stay away as I couldn't even get myself through the campaign in World. I hit a massive wall on a mission defending against the really big monster and gave up.
