Welcome folks, and Merry Christmas! I’ll be rushing around like a headless chook this week because Christmas has somehow snuck up on me, again. They should, like, schedule it more towards the end of the year or something, so you have more time to see it coming. Just a thought. You may all celebrate by arguing over what is the best Christmas game. Batman Arkham Origins and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are set at Christmas time, Metal Gear Solid 2 starts on Christmas Eve, and even Hitman has a Santa level.

The release list this week respects the Yule cram by offering little distraction. It’s a short list.

Horatio Goes Snowboarding is a collection of arcade minigames. The snowboarding itself is like SkiFree, the endless runner skiing game that was on every Windows 95 machine back in the day. There’s even a Yeti that will turn up. But before you can go snowboarding, you have to get a board and get to a helicopter to fly you to the slopes, which is rendered as a Frogger/Crossy Road minigame. It’s all backed by a thumping techno soundtrack.

Adventure games are having a comeback, if they ever really went away. Lacuna is a sci-fi noir adventure game with a pixellated art style that makes it hard to stand out among the crowd. However, when it came out on PC earlier this year, it got rave reviews for a strong story, atmosphere, and for how much attention it pays to player choices.

Vegas Tales is an FMV game where you help a dying casino boss decide who should inherit his estate. You’ll interview people, make choices, and it’s supposed to take as long as a movie.

On the Switch, Carebotz is a twin-stick shooter with exploration for upgrades and gear. Gardener’s Path is a turn-based puzzle game where the dungeons are gridlike gardens, and you’re fighting to keep insects away from the lovely plants.

The pickings are so slim this week, any GOTW given out should have an asterisk next to it. No game this week is truly deserving of a real GOTW. Enjoy your backlog and wait for sales. However, for the sake of making a choice, I’ll say check out Lacuna. Adventure games make me vaguely nostalgic because they were among the first games I played as a kid. But when I dig into my memories, I also remember they were infuriating, with their obtuse puzzle logic, tortuous pathing challenges and backtracking, and tendency to let you get irretrievably stuck. The recent revival of the genre has seen a lot of these rough gameplay edges sanded away, allowing players to actually finish and making them much better vehicles for experiencing stories and characters. If I were to dive back into adventure games, Lacuna would be on the shortlist.

Happy holidays everyone, and goodwill to all!

I recommend... Nothing! Enjoy the holiday, whichever one you celebrate!

Looks like a modern day reskin of the venerable Horace Goes Skiing...Celebrating the 40th anniversary of it or something?

Ahh, that makes sense.
