Welcome folks, and happy “444th Anniversary of the start of Sir Francis Drake sailing around the world” week! When Drake set out in 1577, he wasn’t planning to sail around the world. He was on a secret mission from the Queen to sail to the Americas and steal silver and gold from the Spanish, after the Spanish had stolen it from the locals. After some early raiding success, Drake lost much of his fleet while crossing the Straits of Magellan. He continued to raid his way up the west coast of the Americas, and got as far north as Oregon before turning westward for home. When you check out his long and tortuous route on a map, you realise just how much distance the Suez and Panama Canals have shaved off shipping routes. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you unlock shortcuts as you go.

A Total War Saga: TROY - Rhesus & Memnon adds 2 new heroes, with their unique units and mechanics, to the game. Memnon is an Ethiopian king with horde tactics, while Rhesus is the ruler of Thrace and its chariots. Watching the previews reminded me how pretty this game’s Mediterranean maps are.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning - Fatesworn is the first piece of new Amalur content in almost 10 years. It’s an expansion that lifts the level cap to 50 and adds a Chaos Realm, the source of new quests, enemy types, gear, and skills. Portals to the Chaos Realm start opening up on the map and you have to enter them, go through a procedurally-generated dungeon and kill the boss to shut them down. It doesn’t overhaul the game, it just refills the tank. It’s a reward for the fans who’ve stuck it out through this game’s odd comeback story.

Beyond A Steel Sky has popped up on the list for 4 weeks in a row—there have been delays in physical copies getting to UK and Australia, because of *waves hand* the global logistics thingy. You can still get a digital copy everywhere.

Asteroids: Recharged is trying to be the Tetris Effect of Asteroids. It’s got a new soundtrack, new visuals, and new features such as multi-bullets and boss challenges.

Alfred Hitchcock: Vertigo is an adventure game based on the movie. While the story and characters are different, it recreates the vibe of the movie: its themes and camera shots, including the famous “Vertigo effect” dolly zoom.

Castlevanioid fans have had a feast of games lately. If you’ve got room for one more before Christmas, there’s Aeterna Noctis this week. Its combat and platforming promise to be more challenging than average, but with generous checkpointing.

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon puts the ubiquitous Knight into a game with a blend of roguelite, puzzle, and adventure elements that will fit in well at the app store. Combat is done by matching blocks to do attacks, but Shovel Knight is also in the grid with the blocks and you can move him around.

Five Nights at Freddy's Security Breach keeps the FNAF train rolling, going high-res and first-person. It’s set in a mall and you play as Gregory, a young boy trapped after closing who must survive until 6am while the trademark, creepy FNAF animatronics prowl about. Gregory has poor combat skills, but can hide and use gadgets to get through. Will bigger-budget jumpscares breathe some life into this tired franchise?

On the port front, we have Among Us on consoles and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PC.

The makers of SteamWorld are bringing out their first 3D game: The Gunk. You land on an alien planet to pick some flowers, only to find that everything is covered in icky, slimy, black Gunk. With your trusty power glove, you can vacuum the Gunk and reveal lush alien biomes beneath. There’s also combat, but it feels like this game will rise or fall depending on how gratifying you find it to suck up Gunk.

Does anyone else do the thing where you don’t buy stuff for yourself during December, because Christmas is coming and you don’t want to pre-empt a gift from someone? That’s how I feel about games right now. I’ve drawn a line on new purchases. My Pile is full from the last few months of bountiful harvest, and I’m humpin’ it like a camel until sales.

If I had to choose? I’d probably think it was finally time to get into a Total War game, download the Ultimate edition of A Total War Saga: TROY during sales and end up watching Youtube videos of it instead. Then I would probably check out The Gunk. If vacuuming Gunk is as gratifying as the core mechanic in Ratchet & Clank (smashing boxes), then we’re on. If not, maybe the kids will like it.

Castlevanioid

You nailed the games I'm curious about, but almost certainly gonna wishlist and wait till long in the future to play.

The recharged games are decent, but they seem to have the same power ups. I haven't seen Asteroids yet, and the upcoming Food Fight is starting to worry me.

Pocket Dungeon looked super fun the last time I saw a trailer, so I'll probably pick it up.

Aeterna Noctis is looking like my bread and butter, but perhaps it is the pile of indies I've still yet to get to that prevents me from being too on board with it yet. Otherwise, it's all about The Gunk, as I'm curious how Image & Form's – sorry, Thunderful's – non-SteamWorld 3D project will turn out. It's also on Game Pass, so, easy choice.
