Welcome folks, and happy “154th Anniversary of the Alaska Purchase” week! Russia famously sold Alaska to America for 2c per acre back in 1867. At that time, Russia was more worried about the UK than the US as a rival. The land was seen as largely useless until gold was discovered there in 1896, although taxes from the thriving seal-fishing trade paid off its purchase price well before then. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you get increased benefits from tundra tiles.

Disciples: Liberation is a tactical, dark-fantasy RPG published by Kalypso Media. You play as a fixed hero, Avyanna, with her own inventory and skill trees to invest in. She travels the world isometrically until combat starts, then it’s hex-grid time. In battle, Avyanna is aided by companions and extra units recruited from one of the four factions in the game. The story contains quests that build your allegiance with a faction (to the detriment of other factions) and will branch depending on your faction choices. You also have a home base: an upgradeable city in the sky that produces units for your squad. Your faction choices will affect the buildings you can build there, and therefore the units available to you. While you could theoretically field troops from each faction, the higher-powered ones are locked behind higher faction loyalty levels.

If you’ve finished Metroid Dread already and want to chill out with another Metroidvania (or Castlevanioid?)—this time with no combat, more indie sensibility, and involving a sheep, then try Sheepo. You are a shapeshifting sheep who must find eggs to transform into other creatures and unlock their traversal mechanic, which will get you past various obstacles in the world.

Halloween must be approaching, because there’s a spate of spooky horror games.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is the 3rd of 8 planned games in this survival-horror series. Set in an ancient Mesopotamian temple during the Iraq War, it follows an Aliens model of juiced-up grunts facing indescribable horror and potentially getting picked off one by one. There are 5 playable characters in the squad, and you and your buddies can ensure that some or all of them make it through to the end credits.

Corpse Party (2021) is a rejig of Corpse Party (2016), the school-based, anime, horror game.

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is a spooky puzzle-platformer where, like Trine, different playable characters must cooperate to get through the puzzles. One character is top-down while the other is side-on, and the top-down one has to make shadows for the side-on character to walk over.

Perhaps the most horrifying game coming out this week is Youtubers Life 2, which gamifies the grind of clout chasing with a Sims-y portrayal of how to become a successful Youtuber. A real Youtuber may get popular with streams of Youtubers Life 2 and then the meta-snake will be well and truly eating itself.

This week in “They Made a Game Out of That, Huh”: Toilet Flushing Simulator, which is exactly what you’d expect.

Battlefield 2042 is on the list but won’t be playable until November: it’s had an Open Beta period and is now available for pre-order.

On the Switch, Angry Alligator is like a kiddie version of Maneater, where you play as an alligator who bloodlessly chomps animals to get big and drive humans away from its habitat. And Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gets yet another sword guy.

Disciples: Liberation ticks enough of my boxes to get the GOTW. Overall, it’s a combination of elements that I’ve enjoyed before in other games, but put together in a different way. It looks more complex and interesting than the recent King’s Bounty 2, which I finished despite its draggy overworld stuff. It won’t be as deep, crunchy or granular in how you build your party as Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, but more importantly for me, it will be available on PS4.

Comments

They Always Run is also out this week on the 20th, which ...might be a Metroidvania? Kind of hard to tell from the trailers. It has all the visual markers of one but it showcases combat more than it does unlocking routes through abilities and upgrades, as well as a couple dialogue-type moments. Nonetheless, looks interesting.

Someone wake me up when a decent Disciples game is released. That franchise sure is suffering from some bad juju in the hands of Kalypso.

I'm trying to finish The Caligula Effect 1 because there's enough positive reports about 2 that I am the only one who cares so why am I saying anything?

Oh please, you know you're not the only one who cares.

It's just that no one else other than me cares.

Si, though I kinda thought even you were checked out on it.

I've not played the earlier games, and Kalypso has a patchy rep as a publisher... but this one looks shiny! The Eurojank could be endearing!

Yeah I finished Dread. But I'm playing it again on hard mode

Disciples and Disciples 2 (and its various expansions) were real gems, but Disciples 2 especially was something unique. It was gorgeous for starters, I mean you can pull up screenshots of it against its main contemporary, Heroes of Might and Magic IV to see that quite clearly, and even then it looked even better in motion, with animation and effects ahead of its time. The art style and creature design hold up to this day.

The music was incredible and melancholy. The sound design was top notch and eerie. All of which helped set the tone of a dark, oppressive fantasy world long before Demon's Souls managed something similar.

It was absolutely ahead of its time, and none of the sequels have really seemed to managed to catch even a fraction of that energy.

Well, now I'm extra-hyped (again). I figured if I enjoyed King’s Bounty 2, this would be better.

I forgot this was on my Steam wishlist. Just told me it released today.

Man, there's just way too much to even keep up with.
