In years past we came close to watching Gerald's Game, In the Tall Grass and Eli. Any raves for any of these films or others similar in style?
Ah, Gerald's Game might not be the thing you're looking for.
Spoiler:It does after all feature a prominent degloving. Also, child abuse.
Have you seen You're Next?
You're Next is great one, I'd also go with Ready or Not, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Cabin in the Woods, The Others, or Trick 'r Treat
You're Next was the one with the home invaders wearing animal masks? That was fun!
Getting similar vibes from Ready or Not. Could be a good candidate. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
Ready or Not is great. Samara Weaving is great!
Yes, thumbs way up for Ready or Not.
<3 Penny Dreadful.
Of course HBO sold it to Paramount, so now I can't watch it.
While we're talking about outstanding not-too-gory horror series: Yellowjackets?

Yeah that should be safe. I don't recall much gore. But there's some grizzly situations, one of which I think is somewhat explicit, but it needed to be.
It's a great series though and think the horror is more situational than traditional in-your-face horror.
Hysteria! on Peacock also fits the bill. Really loving this series.
After a popular high school kid goes missing three outcasts from the school try to get more popular by saying they practice Satanism. It works, their band gets popular as do they, but things get way...way...out of hand.
The show is so well done and acted. And takes a few unexpected twists and turns. I was not expecting it to be this good.
Bruce Campbell plays one of his best roles as the level-headed police chief. It's nice to see him playing it straight but with his usual charm instead of his usual over the top characters. But the entire cast is pretty fantastic.
2 more episodes to go for me, so really hoping they stick the landing.
Watched The Empty Man. Which I mostly really liked - the opening prologue was basically worth the price of admission on its own as a contained horror short story. I just have a hard time with the final reveal of
James Badge Dale being a tulpa instead of being a metaphorical empty man for The Empty Man to occupy.
David Prior did a lot work with David Fincher, and it mostly shows in good ways in this movie in where he places his camera and having digital cinematography I like looking at, but that felt like a Fight Club twist without thinking it through.

Yeah I remember the start of the film being so fantastic. Then the rest was kinda a let down but still an ok movie.

Thought of another series which I think might be ok. If you have HBO The Outsider mini-series is pretty fantastic. Another Stephen King story. It's a crime drama but with supernatural elements. I know there's some blood and maybe a grisly crime scene but I don't recall it being overly gory.
The main actor playing the detective is so good. Some nice twists and turns.
The ending was a slight letdown but still up to that point was just fantastic.
Final and complete rundown of my Spooktober:
Abigail [Peacock]
Agatha All Along [Disney+]
An American Werewolf In London [Prime Video, but not anymore]
Insidious: The Red Door [Netflix]
Malignant [Peacock]
Paranormal Activity [Max]
Paranormal Activity 2 [Max]
Paranormal Activity 3 [Max]
Paranormal Activity 4 [Max]
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones [Max]
Poltergeist (1982) [Max]
Shaun of the Dead [Peacock]
Smile [Disney+/Hulu/Paramount+]
Terrifier [Prime Video]
The Babadook [Netflix]
The Birds [Netflix]
The Haunting of Hill House [Netflix]
The Purge [Peacock]
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 50th Anniversary Edition [Prime Video]
Unsolved Mysteries, Volume 5 [Netflix]
Uzumaki [Max]
X [Max]
Didn't bother "ranking" them this time, but I wasn't crazy about Terrifier and X as other people are, hence why I only watched the first film of each trilogy.
The sequels to X are very different. The 2nd one is actually a prequel.

Yesssss. I’m not much of a King fan, but I loved that mini-series.
Watched When Evil Lurks and liked it. Its a pretty hopeless demon possession movie. There are rules and the rules get broken. That's how you get ants and demons. Oh yeah and Gremlins. You break the rules you get gremlins. Then the gremlins buy all the tickets to snow white. You have snow white at home but your kids want to go to the movies. Chaos.
Watched Apocalypse Z. A competently filmed zombie movie from Spain that does absolutely nothing new for the genre. Basically, seen it all before.
The zombies are of the "fast" variety. And it's the typical outbreak story. A guy trying to survive and traveling to reunite with a family member. Got zombies everywhere and bad humans as well.
The ending is very abrupt. So I do wonder if they planned this to have a sequel.

There are at least 3 novels in the series, so I assume they're at least planning to make sequel(s).
Watched Dave Made a Maze. This is about a guy named Dave that makes a maze. Yep. It was on a horror list but its a comedy. People die but its mainly for jokes and wackiness.
The maze is bigger on the inside so Dave is a timelord. Oh and the maze is made of cardboard. A very unique movie. I liked it

I've watched this in the past and it was a fun and creative movie.
X [Max]
Didn't bother "ranking" them this time, but I wasn't crazy about Terrifier and X as other people are, hence why I only watched the first film of each trilogy.
If it makes any difference, I was just so-so on X, but Pearl was one of my favorite horror flicks of that year. Its really fantastic.
Welp, no horror movie viewing with my wife this Halloween. We were hit with a banner for the newly released Season 5 of Demon Slayer as soon as we opened Netfix... and we gobbled it up that evening.
Back on topic: the recent posts about When Evil Lurks has me very curious now. Hoping for a Netflix release at some point.
I watched Abigail over the weekend and loved it. It's actually a pretty funny horror movie with the cast of characters they put in it.
Hellraiser (1987) wasn't a great movie (I just rewatched it), but it had some good bits in it. The lack of budget ($1M) really shows through in the effects. It's a wonder that it ever got a sequel with a three times the budget. I like the 2nd one better no matter what the IMDB user ratings say.
The Purge [Peacock]
In hindsight, I probably should have stuck with this franchise beyond the first movie.
Watched The First Omen 2024. I didn't care for it but I think most people will really like it. It fits in good with the other movies.
Watch Host 2020 which is very short, under a hour. I was going to drop it at the 30 minute marked but checked the time and seen there was less than 30 minutes left. So I kept watching and ended up really like it. A group tries to summon spirits over a zoom call but end up calling something else. Note a movie with the exact same name came out in the same year. Also there is multiple The Host movies which are completely different.
Watched Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person and liked it. This mainly a French comedy about a vampire that doesn't want to kill people. Her family decides to kick her out of the house for not pulling her weight. So she goes on a adventure trying to find a someone that wants to die.
Just finished From S3, episode 5. OMG. If you're not watching this show, you should be.
Waitasec, the show is called "From"?
Yup. Horror version of Lost. kinda. Maybe.
Someone failed Internet Marketing 101.

I loved Unfriended and Host struck a similar vibe. I think the constraints of that subgenre make it really challenging and these two worked pretty well.
