Horror movies and TV series

Please recommend me a Horror movie/series.

I'm not fond of slasher/gorefest horror. I've never seen any of the Freddy/Jason/Michael movies, nor do I want to. I disliked the one Chucky movie I saw. You get the picture, I hope.

I do like psychological horror, for example: Haunting of Hill House / Bly Manor, and The Shining.

I also like horror movies that are more comedic than horror, such as: Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, and Evil Dead / Army of Darkness.

I already plan to watch The Fall of the House of Usher; I assume that'll be right up my alley. Anything else?

Psychological horror is probably my favorite subgenre. I really enjoyed Triangle, The Empty Man, Identity, Lake Mungo (if you aren't adverse to found footage horror flicks), The Night House, Session 9, In the Mouth of Madness, The Lighthouse, The Invitation, The Babdook, and Repulsion. I have others, but I don't recall those listed as being incredibly gory. Though I could be completely forgetting pieces of them.

Well damn. I don't think I've ever even heard of any of those, but a quick peruse through some plot summaries makes them look very intriguing. Thanks!

Oh yeah,Identity. I've been meaning to rewatch that myself. I thought it was just ok in the theater 20 years ago but I read someone singing its praises a few months ago and thought maybe I should try again.

I can’t believe nobody suggested Cabin in the Woods, my favorite horror comedy ever.

Glitch is an outstanding Australian TV series on Netflix. I suggest going in blind for that one.

I can give hearty seconds to the following recommendations, all of which I have enjoyed greatly:

Get Out
Scream (ONLY THE FIRST ONE)
Red Eye
Ready or Not
Session 9 (super creepy)
The Babadook

If you enjoy Flanagan’s Netflix series, you’ll love his movies. They are standouts because, like his series, his movies are character driven.

Absentia (funded on Kickstarter!), Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil (which manages to be better than the film for which it is a prequel), and Doctor Sleep. He wrote/adapted, directed, and edited all of those. I can’t recommend Gerald’s Game because of the themes of abuse.

Another of my favorite makers of weird movies are Benson & Moorehead. My favorite of theirs is The Endless. Other movies of theirs I have enjoyed are Spring and Synchronic. Their first movie, Resolution, is a bit too microbudget for me, and their most recent, Something in the Dirt, didn’t hook me.

Benson & Moorehead also did a couple episodes of Moon Knight and an episode of Loki for Disney+.

I could go on, but I think the last dozen messages here have enough great movie recommendations to last you a year or more.

BaaaabaaaaDOOOK

Definitely watch it.

Thanks for this rec (and a few others ). I was struggling to remember the name of a certain horror comedy movie I saw a few years ago, and thankfully Google found this helpful list, which included quite a few movies recommended in the past few posts - so all y'all are on your game. Anyway, the dumb-funny movie I couldn't remember was "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" which is indeed on that linked list.

It has a few extremely gory moments so I left it out. Spectacular movie though

S2 of Alice in Borderland is pretty good, possibly better than the first.

Man, I loved the premise of S1, right up until they went to the mansion; it all fell apart for me with that.

Here's a loose ranking of what I've watched so far this October:

The Fall of the House of Usher (Miniseries, Netflix)

Let The Right One In (Amazon Prime)

Castlevania: Nocturne (Season 1, Netflix)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version, Amazon Prime)

Insidious (Max)

It (2017 film, Max)

The Conjuring (Max)

Friday the 13th (Max)

Insidious: Chapter 2 (Max)

Friday the 13th: Part III (Max)

Friday the 13th: Part II (Max)

Not a fan of Jason, eh?

The highlights of F13 are 4-6, the Tommy trilogy.

Two and three could've used more Joel, Tom, and Crow.

What the f*ck is that movie and how have I not seen it already??

Probably because it has never been on one of the main streaming services for some reason. I've been wanting to watch it for years!

I seem to remember streaming it. I thought it was on Max for a while, back when I had that. Maybe I just rented it though.

Competed season 11 of The Walking Dead. The show had its problems but I enjoyed it. Now do i start one of the 100 spinoffs or move on to something else.

Watched The Addiction 1995 and really liked. Its a very artsy film on par with A woman walks home at night which is also a vampire movie.

Some would called this allegory for drug addiction. I would not, this straight in your face, knock you over the head, thesis on drug addiction. There is straight up drug use in this movie. In this movie a grad student is attacked by a vampire and then becomes one. She then has deal with her desire for blood which is treated exactly like a drug. The twist is there is also a need to be evil. She can't jus take their blood she has to be cruel about it.

I was surprised by Christopher Walken and Sticky Fingers being in this movie. Also recognized some others but they were less surprising. I'd give the movie 8.5 sticky fingers out of 10. Sticky Fingers actually played Blade in one show that only lasted a season. I actually own it on dvd. I thought it was pretty good but there isn't a ending so i can't recommend it.

Five Nights at Freddie's was... fine. The strongest points were the animatronic characters themselves, but you have to sit through a lot of weaker elements in between their appearances.

Apparently, there is going to be a sequel to The Black Phone. The Black Phone was really good but it absolutely does not need a sequel.

Watched Suitable Flesh, a sex filled body jumping good time. I really dug this movie but it does kind of have a cheap tv feel to it. In this a doctor confronts a kid being plagued by a guy that wants his body. There is a evil book, Child's Play body chanting, and a image of Starro the Conqueror.

The ending is when things get really crazy. I'm not sure if people like the beginning and middle but the end is fire. There is extreme body horror and yet not enough body horror. I give it 8 chances to spot Starro the Conqueror out of 10. I don't recommend this movie. I think most people wont like it.

Us was probably the best horror movie I watched so far this month. Just gotta wonder if Santa Cruz is tired of being typecast in horror and crime movies.

Watched Snake Outta Compton on tubi. A snake falls from a plane where a nerd finds it. The nerd uses a device on the snake to make it grow. A band tries to raise money to payback a gang member they borrowed money from. A new cop goes on a training day with a bad cop.

This movie is terrible. I think it is more bad than so bad it is good but I think many people will have fun with. This movie goes to some crazy off the wall places. You will not see them coming.

So I started watching Bosch: Legacy season 2 today and an ad popped up for Totally Killer on Amazon, and I decided to give it a whirl. It's basically an 80s killer movie crossed with Back to the Future. Fun flick - ticked a fair number of boxes for what I'd like to see in a "horror" movie.

And now I've watched Cabin in the Woods, which did not at all play out how I thought it was going to, from start to finish.

"One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach: all the damned vampires."

Crazy, right? One thing I loved about it is the way that it gradually becomes...

Spoiler:

effectively a horror-themed Westworld.

And the surprise guest star at the end made me LOL.

Huh. I had written off Westworld because I'm not really into "Westerns" as a theme, but a quick perusal of a synopsis tells me that that's not really what that show is. Great, something else to add to the watchlist.

YES!

Watched The Beyond 1981 which was pretty gory but plot made no sense. A woman inherits a hotel that was built on the seventh gate of hell. A plumber awakens the gate on accident while trying to fix a leak. Then people die most while getting a eye or two ripped out or poked out.

The movie starts off hot with a man having his flesh whipped off with a chain. Then reenact the crucifixion on him. Then hit him with acid. The movie doesn't say why they are doing this but I'm guessing it is to close the hell gate or open it. Or maybe he stole one of their amazon packages and want to teach him a lesson.

The movie then jumps to present day and we get the plumber situation. There is a blind woman that isn't explained. Is she good, dead, alive, a ghost, demon, or maybe a human. No idea. This is movie you have to make up your own reasons for why anything is happening. The good news is if you like gore you will love this movie. They have WTF moment after WTF moment.

I don't know what to rate it. I'm not sure if I liked it or loved it.

Watched The Conference 2023 and was hating it up until a flagpole moment then things got interesting. This is a slasher comedy. This wasn't funny at all and most of the kills are cut away which is dumb. Still the movie had some fun moments.

I think if they went all out on the kills this would have been classic. Better jokes would have been nice but lots of people will find it really funny.
