Welcome folks, and happy “431st Anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu moving into Edo castle” week! This was part of a radical deal that Tokugawa made with a daimyo he had just defeated, where they essentially agreed to swap their landholdings. As unconventional as it was, it still worked out for Tokugawa, and he went on to unify all Japan under his Shogunate. The capital was moved to Edo (now Tokyo) and the Tokugawa Period lasted until 1868. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you wait for your neighbour to build nicer cities before you invade them.

KeyWe is a charming co-op puzzle platformer with a deliciously goofy concept. You play as Kiwi birds who have been put in charge of an old-timey post office. Kiwis are flightless birds, so your actions are limited to jumping, sitting on things, pecking them with your beak, and chirping. Regardless, there’s a lot of variety in the tasks to complete. Many co-op games have sharp edges that secretly encourage griefing and competitiveness; the devs seemed to have smoothed those aspects out, so it just looks like a fun time. This is a good game to play with kids, or a buddy who’s not as much of a gamer as you.

Speaking of goofy, Maneater: Truth Quest is the first bit of DLC for last year’s brutally humorous shark game. It lifts the level cap by 10, and gives a whole new ability tree—radiation—culminating in a Godzilla-like breath beam. The beam may come in handy for the new enemy types, which include helicopters that will obligingly hover relatively low over the water when chasing you. There will also be tough apex predators; ones with similar upgrades to you. There’s a new conspiracy theory storyline, narrated with the usual gusto by Chris Parnell. The only downer looks like a bunch of timed mission sequences, but otherwise it’s more chompy fun.

RICO London is the second RICO game. Content warning: you play as a cop, and you are mercilessly killing enemies. It’s a first-person shooter with procedurally-generated levels. You go through a building, breaching rooms to take out the crims inside. When you open a door, you get a short burst of slo-mo to give you the chance to one-shot everyone inside, or futz it up and succumb to the chaos. You start off on the ground floor, facing goons with crowbars, but as you go higher up, they’ll have shotguns, machine guns, grenades, and hostages. It’s got a slick, cel-shaded, comic book presentation, rudimentary upgrades, and gear progression. Plus, it can be played single player or co-op.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous drops for PC this week and is expected to come to consoles next year. This is an isometric CRPG by Russian devs, Owlcat games. Tabletop Pathfinder fans will recognise that it is based on a popular campaign from the tabletop version, just like the previous game, Kingmaker.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker was a flawed gem. It had a rocky launch, but a lot of the rougher edges were patched out by the time it hit consoles. The town-building and empire-management layers had interesting things going on, but still felt unbalanced somehow, and time-consuming. Even so, I played a lot of Kingmaker. I enjoyed it, especially the variety of classes and specialisations on offer. Not to mention the fact that you can pick a level from any class when you level up. I only didn’t finish because the campaign is long—like, hundreds of hours long.

All this is to say that the devs have addressed much of this feedback, and Wrath of the Righteous looks a lot more polished and balanced, though it will still be long. Rather than building towns in an empire, you’re building your stronghold and an army to take on a demonic invasion of the realm. Also, more of the Pathfinder ruleset has been added in, with more classes, mounted combat, and mythic paths to shape your character. Do you want to be a crusading Angel, who summons celestial allies in battle, or a sardonic Trickster, who can turn a natural 1 into a natural 20?

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous will certainly tide CRPG fans over until Baldur’s Gate 3 comes out of Early Access; it could even make them totally forget about it. GOTW.
