Welcome folks, and happy “848th Anniversary of the building of the Tower of Pisa” week! The famous leaning tower was started on this day in 1173, though not finished until 200 years later. The leaning began in the tower’s 5th year of construction, so the Pisans paused the job to wait for the soil to settle. 50 years later, the soil hadn’t settled and the tower was still leaning, but Pisans decided to finish it anyway. The higher sections are engineered to compensate for the lean. You may all celebrate by playing a game where an early build choice leads you to strange new places.

The big news is that Hades is coming to Xbox and PlayStations this week. I’m now 64% more likely to play this beloved, rogue-like dungeon-crawler. You don’t understand: I can’t get near my PC at home because of the kids, and when I finally do get on, I’m exhausted and the mouse is covered in peanut butter.

Things have been busy in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The new Sigrblot season has begun, with plenty of activities and trimmings. And this week we get The Siege of Paris, an expansion that takes you to the very large, new map of Francia, featuring Frankish knights. While the mounted enemies in England would very politely dismount to fight you, Frankish knights, and their lances, offer no such courtesy. New abilities include: stuffing a grenade down the front of someone’s shirt, and a very Dishonored-y arrow that summons a plague of rats to eat someone. Further details are sketchy, but it’s a big Ubisoft expansion. Expect a chunky map festooned with icons and a main questline that is probably hours too long, but still so playable.

This week’s moody, walking sim with puzzles is Faraday Protocol. You’re an astronaut landing on a strange new planet, filled with puzzles to solve and a story that reveals in drips as you do. It’s nice that Myst is still having an influence on video games.

Otherwise, there’s City of Gangsters on PC. It’s broadly the same concept as Empire of Sin: managing a prohibition-era crime syndicate. But where Empire of Sin zooms in to take gangsters through the streets (and combat), City of Gangsters stays zoomed out and goes into way more detail on the big-picture gangster economy, making it more of a management tycoon game.

It’s a tough week for a GOTW pick: most of the contenders are in my “almost” category. City of Gangsters looks interesting, but it’s on PC so when would I get to play it? The new Valhalla expansion looks solid, but I poured triple-digit hours into Valhalla and felt like I was done. I’ll give the GOTW to Hades, because I need to know what all the fuss is about, even if my record with rogue-likes is patchier than a patchwork quilt with a picture of a cabbage patch on it, that once had holes in it but was patched up by Patch Adams.

Hades is so good I chose to re-purchase it on PS5 just to get some more sales their way. I lost my PC save some months ago so I will pretty much start from scratch anyway.

Wow, I forgot Godfall existed.

The thing about Hades is it's not only driving you forward with continuous improvements to your character but also with continuous new story beats. There's a tome's worth of writing in this game and it's doled out in appetizing bits drizzled in a succulent sauce of voice acting. Even when one fails one is rewarded with engaging story bits.

I hope lots of people play Hades if they haven't already. I'm tempted to start a new save...
