Welcome folks, and happy “Isabel Allende’s birthday” week! Born in Peru, raised in Chile, Isabel Allende has written 21 novels, which have sold over 74 million copies. She is the world’s most widely-read Spanish-language author. You may all celebrate by playing a game in its original language.

If you’re a fan of Humble Games as a publisher, Dodgeball Academia is probably already on your radar. It’s a sports JRPG set in a school, but a school where dodgeball is life. You will explore the school, recruit buddies for your team, and get into dodgeball games that don’t look like any game of dodgeball I ever played. There’s whirlwinds, lightning attacks, energy beams, and what have you. It’s presented very vividly and, though it’s out on every platform, looks perfect for the Switch.

If you’re hankering for a Battle Royale game with a melee combat system built around timing combos and counters, then Hunters Arena: Legends comes to the PlayStations this week. It originally released on PC last year to solid reviews but struggled to keep players, which is not great for a 30-player Battle Royale game. It’s featured on PSPlus in August, showing a concerted push to entice players in. It could be now or never for this game.

If you’re on the Xbox and want to hear about a sclusy on your side of the fence, there’s JRPG Armed Emeth, which looks like it would have been right at home on the DS.

If the original Fallout and Children of Morta had a baby, it would be Death Trash. It’s a pixel-art, post-apocalyptic RPG with cyberpunk horror vibes. Like Fallout, you travel an overworld, then head into locations for isometric exploration and combat. Like Children of Morta, combat is in real-time with a flow between attacks and dodges. The story starts in a familiar Fallout way, where your character is kicked out of an underground bunker to explore the wasteland. There’s also crafting, stealth, quirky quests, dialogue checks, and skills like... puking.

If Tolkien had been born 20 years later than he was, then The Lord of the Rings would be influenced by World War 2 rather than the first World War. As such, Tolkien would have had a greater appreciation of air power and the strategic potential of having a flock of giant eagles on your side. He would surely have written epic battle scenes involving those eagles, most likely being ridden by wizards who shoot spells at enemies on the ground or in the air. Which is basically The Falconeer: Edge of the World. I’m not sure anyone else is doing 3D, bird-riding, aerial combat games and this looks exhilarating. Birds handle differently from planes, giving you a different bag of tricks in combat. The chunky DLC coming out this week also marks the end of any platform sclusy shenanigans, so it’s never been more available.

If none of the above options looks good, there’s GRIME, a surreal, indie, action-adventure game where you fight with living weapons taken from your body and absorb enemies’ traits using a black hole that replaced your head. Or there’s the more whimsical and chill Haven Park, which is about maintaining a camping park.

My GOTW goes to Death Trash this week. It’s one of those games where you can see the influences, but it still has its own flavour. It’s talking a big game around build flexibility and multiple quest outcomes, and I can’t tell if the combat holds up, but it looks intriguing enough to find out.

Comments

Never heard of Dodgeball Academia until just now, but it sounds amazing.

I can't get past the header image. It's nuts!

Death Trash is absolutely incredible. We discussed the demo a few CC's ago and it has the making of something really special. Folks should check it out.

Also, the Death Trash demo is still up on Steam if people want to try before they buy.
