Rich's comment about people accused of awful things referring to the ones who say "well that's not the experience I've had with [person]" made me immediately think of Don Burke, and the (multiple?) Ch 9 higher ups that made that comment.

I bought one of his books at an op shop and threw it directly into the recycling. It felt good.

Sorry that no-one outside of Australia will get this post.

Yay! Thank you for answering my question! I wasn't sure if I worded it quite right but, as always, you all provided a fantastic and interesting discussion.

Really interesting point about AAA games usually being built by same/similar teams, therefore contributing ideas we've seen before. I didn't think of it like that.

I think an interesting point that is adjacent to this discussion is how the original Dota had a bunch of unintended bugs that, instead of fixing, were tweaked to become in-game mechanics. For example, jungle monsters spawned every 2 minutes, but would not spawn if there was an object (i.e, those monsters) within a specific hidden box around them. Clever players would hit the monsters a few seconds before those 2 minutes to pull them outside of the box, then kill both the original set of monsters, plus the new ones. This led to support players "stacking" the jungle full of monsters for other players to farm up for a huge gold advantage.

Instead of fixing this, some values were adjusted and characters became balanced around it.

I just think that's a super interesting way to balance a game, and something I've never seen before in a AAA product. Bugs are almost always squashed completely.

What game is the header art from?

That’s Death’s Door.

I’m catching up on some past eps and just wanted to say maaate I get this reference

Also, as for lovable janky games, I recently fired up Fallout New Vegas again and have been enjoying its awesome quests characters and storytelling while also experiencing its crashes and jag… hasn’t been patched in 7 years
