Steam Deck and Linux Gaming

A big thing to watch out for is the inter pupillary distance (IPD) all of the xr glasses out there have somewhat hidden ipd ranges and if yours doesnt match you actually can't see the whole screen. Unfortunately i havnt found any that are adjustable.

It is the Apple problem. A tech space is developing in all directions, then Apple makes a product and everyone stops R&D and starts trying to compete with Apple usually copying what they are doing. And those that don't do this usually go bankrupt.

Asking for some advice if that's ok.

Trying to play The Sinking City. It's in my epic library so I'm using heroic launcher.

The title screen and options menu load ok but when I start the game it goes into a loading screen then goes completely black.

I've tried switching to proton experimental which doesn't chance anything but then I'm not sure experimental works with non steam games.

The odd thing is that Sinking City is listed as verified for the steamdeck.

Must be something about that. The native Steam version gets to the opening cutscene and them I'm stuck talking to a dude insisting that I take all my belongings before I get off the boat.

Disappointed.. I tried installing Fallout London - first step was installing Fallout 4 GOTY which was $15 on GOG. Fine easy enough I thought - Used the Lutris ...front end. It downloaded then hung, on reboot my deck now just sits at the logo...the longest I have let it set it 20 minutes

If I hit alt-f4 I cag get to a login screen and log in with "deck" becuase I remember the password but I have no idea what to do past that.

what would I even try fix?

Grr so now I am downloading an image and preparing to reformat the thing.

What if you already wear glasses?

you talking about the xreal glasses robear? they come with a little set of glasses that mount inside, you get your prescription put into that frame and you're set.
I wear contacts so i don't use them.

Yes, thank you Tycho!

Try Heroic Games Launcher. There's a Config menu that will allow you to tinker with all sorts of Wine options, including selecting which Wine Version, using a dedicated Video Card, and modifying WineTricks.

I've found that swapping the Wine version helps with GOG releases. Not sure why.

This just got into my feed. You know the people behind the GENKI products? They made portable Switch docks, brought Bluetooth audio to the Switch (years before Nintendo released the system update to make it built-in).

Well, now they're making a sort of clip-on external SSD housing called GENKI Savepoint. You install Windows on this external SSD and boot the Steam Deck from that when you want your Epic launcher, or Battle.net, or GOG, etc. I guess this is supposed to be simpler than partitioning the built-in drive for a dual boot. It also works the other way, where you could put SteamOS on the drive and plug it into a Windows-native device like the ROG Ally.

I've been happy with their Switch products, although the amount of times I've needed them is small.

Seems like it will occupy the charging port, although it says it provides a pass-through charging port of its own.

They're asking $40 for the Savepoint (housing) itself. It will need an SSD inside, which you can add-on in the KS for $60/100/160 for the 512MB/1TB/2TB version. Or you can obtain and put your own in.

The Kickstarter for Genki Savepoint recently started and ends in 34 days. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...

I do like Genki's Switch stuff. And I also got their earbuds, as a backup for my AirPods. They're serviceable.

Has anyone put Windows on their Steam Deck and are happy with it?

If so, any tips/tricks?

I dual boot mine, though more for the tinkering aspect than any real use - I don't spend much time in the Windows side. As far as I'm aware the drivers aren't fully available for the OLED deck yet, but that news may have passed me by as I just have the original LCD.

There are various sets of tools now to help you connect the controller functionality into Windows, but I never managed to make things quite as fluid as SteamOS. Handheld Companion and Steam Deck tools for example.

Nope, OLED is still waiting for drivers, specifically for wifi, Bluetooth, and audio.

Some people seem to have found wifi drivers that will work with the Deck's hardware, but still waiting on the rest.

I've been playing Persona 5 Reload on my deck and it runs perfectly without any tweaking.

Literally the next day: Valve releases new Windows drivers for OLED Decks.

One big caveat still: the audio drivers support headphones and Bluetooth audio only, not the Deck’s built in speakers. So not all the way there yet, but a welcome burst of activity after a long period of quiet.

These instructions are for Highfleet on Steam but it had the same loading screen to black and CTD that you are having. Got it working with:

install ProtonUp-Qt. Once this is done, you should return to gaming mode and select the properties for Highfleet. In compatibility, check off ‘Force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool’ and then select GE-Proton7-35 in the list below
