Welcome folks, and happy “127th Anniversary of the opening of the first Ferris wheel” week! It was unveiled at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and was intended to be America’s answer to the Eiffel Tower, which was the centrepiece of the Paris Exhibition 4 years earlier. You may all celebrate by playing a game you can just play over and over.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance has the funniest trailer this week. Narrated by Jemaine Clement, it is worth a watch. The game itself is a 3D hack’n’slasher with randomised loot and very MMO quest structures. The characters and Icewind Dale setting are from D&D books, but don’t expect a crunchy representation of the ruleset. Combat and leveling are streamlined to be a slick, action experience—with powers on cooldown, combo chains of light and heavy attacks to build a legendary attack meter, while not forgetting to dodge, block, and parry. Rather than make your own arcane builds, you have 4 premade characters to choose from: the legendary Drizzt as a magic rogue, a healing archer, a tanky dwarf, and the hammer-wielding barbarian. You can even combine characters’ moves for extra damage: the barbarian can knock mobs down and set them up for stabby criticals from Drizzt, or the archer can pin mobs with AoE attacks, letting the dwarf get in and axe them. While you can play it solo, swapping between characters, it looks like it’s really built for 4-player co-op. It’s also on GamePass from day one.

Scarlet Nexus is an anime JRPG that also focuses on fast, real-time action. Although it has 2 characters, it is single-player; you just switch between them. Combat involves combos and a lot of levitating items from the environment to fling at enemies.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX recreates a classic, 1986 2D action-platformer from the Sega Master System. The levels are the same, but the graphics have a lot more pixels. As is the trend with these classic remasters, you can switch between original and new graphics anytime—I think devs just do that to reinforce how much work they did buffing the graphics.

BeeFense BeeMastered is a tower-defense, base-building game. Do you think it might have a bee theme? I’m guessing it’s about bees. *watches trailer* Yep, it’s bees.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is also out, in another vain attempt to convince people that the Olympics is actually happening this year.

On the switch, there’s Mario Golf: Super Rush, the sixth Mario Golf game. There’s curve balls, spin, and you can play it with buttons or motion controls. There’s also… battle golf? An RPG mode? A Speed Golf game where you race around the golf course, collecting coins and taking out opponents? I just got more interested.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance may not be the prettiest game coming out this week, but exploring the combat synergies between the characters looks like a fun squad activity. GOTW.

Sheesh, Drizzt is busy this game. He's a rogue, archer, dwarf and barbarian? Wow, they really aren't following canon, are they?

I'll give DA a go, but only because it's on Gamepass.

Otherwise, Mario Golf looks like a solid new entry with interesting new rush mechanic that I'll maybe get on sale. I have such a hard time shelling out $60 for Mario sports games. Pack Golf and Tennis together? I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

LEGO Builder's Journey? That looks hella cute.

Scarlet Nexus has a demo, I suggest folks give it a try if they're at all interested as I was pleasantly surprised. Enough to buy it? Sorry, Bamco, I bounce off all your games.

Ooh, Legend of Mana is being rereleased! I was in Japan in 1999 when it was released there and promptly picked up a copy for my PS1 as I am a diehard Mana fan. Looking forward to revisiting it after all this time.

You may kid, but some early previews have said that Drizzt is OP, with significantly more moves and combos than the others.

Only got around to reading this and already beat you to it. RE4 and REmake have been getting play time in this household o' mine.

I'll be picking up the Legend of Mana remaster, a game I never expected to see Square Enix acknowledge again. Despite how different it was from the prior game released in the US, I had a fondness for it and played it several times. I'm looking forward to diving back into it.

I plan on picking up Scarlet Nexus if it ever hits Game Pass. The demo wasn't bad, but for me, it's not worth the $60 asking price.

I've got Mario Golf in the Switch and day-one update installed. It doesn't look super deep, but it looks PERFECT for my small kids. We're going to be playing Speed Golf in the morning.
