Battlefield 2042 Catch All

I might actually be day 1 on this. Might play on my Series X tho.

Supposedly the reason the test got pushed was for them to add in crossplay

Normally I would mock you for such scrubbery, but since the game supposedly supports full cross-play across PC and both of the new gen consoles, it's all good.

The PS4 and Xbox One generation support cross-play only with each other, given those versions are also restricted to the smaller player count (64).

I'm reasonably old. I'll be trying it.

It’s suddenly more imperative that I get a PS5.

One of the things I'm especially happy to see in this game is bots. Every game like this should have them.

DICE claims the bots are going to be pretty good.

We’ve tried to put a lot of effort into making them play just like a player would. So it would be really hard for people to tell the difference between an AI and a real human player because they will run around, they will drive vehicles, they will pick each other up, they will drop [each other] off at objective locations and things like that – it’s a very intelligent system. And then you can tweak and tune some of the things they are and aren’t allowed to do, including how difficult they are to play against.

I'm of the opinion that bots are one of many gaming features that should be considered accessibility features, but that's a whole other discussion.

What I'd love are for weapons to not be tied to progression systems anymore, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Yeah, they want that sweet ‘Shortcut Bundle’ money.

Agreed. I hate progression systems in shooters. You can get 90% of the way there with just optional challenges to unlock little achievements, and leave the content gating out entirely.

Weapons in Portal mode will have two settings: Historical and Official.

“Historical” gives a weapon the killing power it had in the game it appeared in. So if you play with 1942 weapons set to “Historical”, the weapons will have the time-to-kill that they had in BF1942, letting you make a reasonable “1942 remastered” kind of mode.

“Official” is the cross-era balanced setting, meaning a 1942 weapon will have significantly less killing power than a 2042 weapon. That allows for newer weapons to have a power advantage over older weapons, the way you would expect in those “50 WWII soldiers vs. 4 future soldiers” cross-era game modes.

I had wondered about this, and this sounds like the most sensible approach. Hopefully the weapon settings have good visibility to the players, so that players understand why a K98 is lethal in one game but requires multiple hits in another.

It would be a setting for the portal you're entering. Also most likely a filter option.

Tech test started today.

It's definitely a test. Lot of stuff not in yet or locked out. Very bare bones.

Yeah, they've emphasized that it's a service test and not a gameplay test.

I think they don't want to preempt the preorder beta period.

Not something we can really talk about but to keep it vague even with the issues and early state, there was actually a few things in there that I liked and I look forward to the release.

Not that I am talking to anyone about it but if we were, I agree

Regardless of what they show in any tech tests, I'm mostly excited about Portal. I feel that's going to make this an entirely new experience compared to all the BFs in the past.

Portal is the killer feature of 2042. It also sounds like it may end up being a standalone sort of thing that outlives 2042, which would be more good news.

I'm also starting to get pretty excited about Hazard Zone, given the datamined leaks from the technical test.

The current buzz is that it looks like something like Tarkov crossed with Hunt: Showdown, two games I've come close to buying but not yet pulled the trigger on (Tarkov mostly because it still isn't on Steam - sorry dudes, I'm not splitting up my PC game collection).

Real interested to see how BF fares in a permadeath-ish (?) PvEvP gameplay loop. Definitely some big potential for squading up on Discord to make some runs.

Yeah I’m excited about both Portal and Hazard. Looking forward to hearing more about Hazard officially.

Hunt:Showdown i highly recommend. There's a lot of nuances in the game and different ways to reach a win state. It's also IMO one of, if not the best game in regards to sound design.

I have it but it's challenging to solo and going with randoms is hit or miss. Especially using in game voice chat since other teams can hear. I'd LOVE to get into this more with some GWJer's.
