2021/22 Soccer Thread: It's Euro 2020 until it becomes 2021

Obligatory mention on my feed that these early games can be misleading and Portugal won by not winning in the group stage.

Not so hot take. Turkey isn't winning this thing.

Sorry, bub. Portugal is not winning this thing. (I would very much like to wrong though!!!)

Turkey weren't dreadful, but I didn't see the so much talked about flair this new generation supposedly has. Maybe because Italy are just that good. We'll see in the next games, I guess.

Italy are really solid, like their long running invincible streak already implied.

Pessimism? You are Portuguese

My point was more that commentators will always use 2016 to say anything can happen no matter what happens early on. In this instance though... I think it's safe to say Turkey is in trouble.

Also via Ronaldo: "We have a positive thought which is that things are going to go well. I asked the Portuguese people at home and abroad to think positively."

I think maybe the one thing Portugal might have going which is hard to factor in is an actual team unity. Italy looked like that today.

They also have Cristiano Ronaldo. I wonder if he's more hinderance than help these days.

They should start using CR as a 2nd half weapon, like Rui Costa was used during his career's end to great effect, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

There's a reason for it. We have good players, but not a good coach.

He could always just get hurt again.

Covid might be a factor also.

I think that Spanish team was only recently vaccinated? Totally slipped my mind that many of these players might not even have 1 dose.

Switzerland dominated the 1st half. Wales isn't looking too good.

The crowd are so far from the pitch today to protect them from Seferovic's finishing.

Embolo show. This guy is great!

VAR to the rescue!

Switzerland deserved the win, but that's what you get for releasing the pressure after the 1st goal. Good for Turkey.

They'll be partying in the street of Cwmystwyth tonight.

Not sure if real town or mild exaggeration, which I'm certain is the point.

You should see a doctor about that.

When I moved to America I started to play a game with the locals for self-amusement called "Is Bismarck talking about cricket or just making all this up."

I would extend that game to Welsh place names, but I can't pronounce any of them.

Cwmystwyth is a real place though. It has a lead mine!

I would never win this game.

I think I'd do okay. I know about bludgers and snitches.

Now the Finns are doing it.

Their starting backline : Raitala, Uronen, Toivio, Arajuuri and... checks notes... O'Shaughnessy

I don't know enough about Finland to make a good joke here outside of rallying and that the rest of Scandinavia thinks they're the weird ones, which is saying something.

EDIT: Oh no, here we are

You lose Finnish support when you call them Scandinavian.

The ESPN preamble dude had clearly been briefed as he kept saying "Nordic."

Derek Rae's committed pronunciation on Finnish, Danish and German names today is a delight.

Who's sniping the Finnish? They keep falling over.

Oh, sh*t...

Oh no. Come on Eriksen.

Also, TV crew, please stop showing what's happening.

Game is on hold.

Insane to watch. Even when they aren't showing anything.

That looked very bad, hopefully he recovers from whatever occurred.

Zero clue what to say other than I really, really, really hope he's okay.

Well, without doing too much speculation, Getty has a couple of images of him on the stretcher, eyes-open and appearing conscious, so here's hoping.

Fingers crossed. Most terrifying thing I've seen in sports live.
