Welcome folks, and happy “501st Anniversary of the Field of the Cloth and Gold” week! This was the ostentatious meeting between Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France. While they were ostensibly there to discuss peace between Christian kingdoms, it actually turned into a pageantry-off with each king trying to wow the other with their wealth and splendor. There were feasts, games, music, and of course, jousting. Henry even challenged Francis to a wrestling match (and lost). You may all celebrate by playing, well, maybe a game that comes out this week.

We may be just a short time until the new incarnation of E3, but this is the week where the PS5 starts to pull away from the PS4 to become its own beast in terms of offering games you can’t get elsewhere. Final Fantasy and Ratchet & Clank are heavy-hitting series for Sony. It’s just a pity the console availability isn’t keeping pace with the games releases. You can’t get a PS5 for love nor money anytime soon—stupid cryptominers.

I’m super pumped for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. It’s the first new-new Ratchet & Clank since 2013’s Into the Nexus. A lot of games offer a similar combination of platforming, exploration, and combat, with a steady stream of new gadgets and weapons as you progress. For me though, this series strikes the purest balance. Plus, the humour is fine-tuned to hit well with kids and also give adults a decent chuckle. Besides, Ratchet & Clank genuinely have the funnest collection of weapons to use in any game. Burping Fish? Mr. Zerkon? The Groovitron that makes all enemies disco dance? The Sheepinator? C’mon.

Anyhoo, Rift Apart’s big, “only on next-gen” feature is the teleporting fast travel: use the rift tether to open a portal and travel instantly to another zone or even planet, with no loading screen. There’ll be a slew of new traversal mechanics, like dashing and the “so-hot-right-now” wall-running. Also for the first time, there’s a playable female Lombax, Rivet, voiced by the doyenne of voice-acting, Jennifer Hale. The environments are vibrant and jaw-dropping, with cinematic-to-action transitions cribbed right outta Spider-Man and a sense of scale straight from the God of War playbook. It’s almost too spoilery to find out what the new weapons are.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the PS5 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is the first chapter of Remake that came out earlier this year on PS4. It’s free if you bought the PS4 Remake (not through PS Plus), though there is a complex and memory-hungry process to transfer your saves. A chapter where you play as Yuffie the ninja, which is only available on PS5 and was not released earlier this year, will be sold separately or as part of a Deluxe Edition. Also, there are rumours that the next chapters of Remake will be PS5-exclusive.

Now, on to some options for the 99% of us who don’t have a PS5:

Chivalry II is the Battlefront model applied to medieval battles, with large-scale, 64-on-64 multiplayer action. Just pick up whatever sword, axe, bow or anvil you can find and get to bloody fighting, mashing your “yell” key all the while. The different game modes, like storming an enemy’s stronghold to kill the king, or two armies going at each other on open ground, look like heart-pumping, gory, chaotic fun. Will it topple Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord from the throne?

Otherwise, there’s 3 remastered Ninja Gaiden games in the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection. Fans are upset that the PS Vita Sigma ports are being remastered instead of their original versions. Perhaps it’s to guarantee performance on the Switch. The Switch also serves up another week of ported Steam games, including the Baldur’s Gate-lookin Shieldwall Chronicles: Swords of the North and the world’s first skate BOATING game, Wave Break.

For me, Ratchet & Clank is a system-selling franchise. Up until now, I was happy to wait for a PS5—now I am starting to crave one. Rift Apart gets the GOTW.

I'm excited for Backbone. A really cool and furry looking film-noir-style detective adventure coming out on Tuesday. There is a free prologue episode on Steam and it's going to be on GamePass for PC at launch.

This week is all about Blackwood and checking out Pso2's face-lift in New Genesis.

R&C is one of those series where I'm one and done: I'll play it once and never pick it up again. It's an enjoyable experience, but not the type of game that sticks with me afterward. In that way, it's a bit like every Uncharted games I've ever played.

Backbone look very stylish. Love that Twentieth Century MT font -- very Civ5 lookin'.

It's all about going back in time to my College days for me. I'll probably hold off on Ninja Gaiden for a bit due to the price, but No More Heroes on PC is perfect while my Switch is feeling unwell. It's one of the few games that will admittedly not be the same without motion controls, but it will be nice to replay before the third game releases.
