NFL 2021: The preseasoning

Pages

Everyone's simultaneously 0-0 and a Superb Owl contender.

Yep, it's the preseason.

Here's the schedule (source; dates for each team are here)

May 24 to June 18: OTAs and mandatory minicamps

July 15: Long-term extension deadline for franchise-tagged players

22 days before the preseason: Training camp
(That's 22 days before a team's first preseason game, that is, and it's only for rookies. Veterans report a week later -- that is, 15 days before a team's first preseason game.)

Aug. 5: 2021 NFL Hall of Fame Game: Cowboys vs Steelers.
... HoF classes of 2020 and 2021 will be inducted

Sept. 4: Rosters must be reduced to 53 players

Sept. 5: Practice squads can be assembled

Sept. 9 (Thursday): Cowboys at Bucs to start the 2021 season

I'll take OTAs for $500.

"The player most likely to break a leg this year"

Who is Trevor Lawrence?

"Correct!"

Go Ravens. See y'all in August.

Sounds like Enix has become a Darnold True Believer.

@#$%^!!. I meant to write that in the sarcasm font.

Meanwhile, the only thing I believe about Darnold is that he sucks. Oh, and that he's very meme-able:

He also has great hair. That's three things, then.

Don't be making fun of my new quarterback's skinny little chicken legs.

Hey, listen, nobody wants Lawrence to hurt his legs, but, for God's sake, let's make sure we preserve his hair.

Beginning to think my skepticism of Urban Meyer might have been warranted.

Already knew my absolute disdain of Trent Baalke was.

I mean, I don't care that much about a bottom of the roster signing, and I doubt he ends up functional enough to have any shot at making the 53, but to not even make him try out to earn the spot... what a clown car organization.

If you'll excuse me, Imma go watch some more videos of Trey Lance throwing to actual NFL pass receivers.

I am shocked Tebow didn't opt for 15.

That nunber belongs to an actual NFL player.

Feel like just maybe there's a long history of successful college coaches coming to the NFL and trying to build a team just like they did in college and failing utterly, and Urban Meyer has chosen to ignore every bit of that history. So, yeah, I'd say skepticism seems like a pretty good option here.

That belongs to G Minshew, who is destined to be cut or traded. Not that Tebow is going to make the opening day roster, but…

College football coaches are some of the most arrogant people on the entire planet.

As a Panthers fan in Year 2 of the Matt Rhule, uh, era, I concur.

They go from being a god to just another chump coach. It's not much different from being a first time parent.

I forgot to mention: Marqise Lee was signed by the 49ers after his tryout.

I bring it up now to inform you that Marqise Lee has been cut by the 49ers, so they can sign Bennie Fowler instead.

I always rooted for Bennie Fowler as he seemed like a good guy, but I'd probably have Marqise Lee for three weeks a season than Fowler for 16.

Well either guy is a longshot to make the 53 for even 1 week. Especially if Jalen Hurd turns out to be, in fact, alive.

Niners keep 6 WRs, and Deebo, Aiyuk, Sanu, and Richie James probably lock down those first 4. If Hurd shows up alive and capable of doing anything useful, he probably locks down #5. Then you've got Travis Benjamin, River Cracraft, Trent Sherfield (who the team just signed via RFA) and Jauan Jennings (still my favorite for the spot) to get past to get to #6. Even if injuries take a couple of those off the board, still gonna be hard to make the roster.

Julio Jones says he wants to be traded to the Patriots.

He knows Brady isn't still there, right?

Well, they do need a receiver that can outjump defensive backs on those Mac Jones underthrows.

Patriots? Ugh, why? Lol

But the Pats have Legion’s favorite rookie quarterback

Spoiler:

At least until it was clear that the 49ers weren’t morons

Maybe it's an Alabama cult thing.

The Falcons are clearly not great at the moment, so, sure I could understand if Julio wanted to go somewhere and chase a ring, so . . . why would he go to the Patriots? Find that a very confusing destination.

Trade to Patriots for a 1st
Patriots trade to Bucs for two 1sts

It's gonna happen

Which college coaches were successful in the NFL?

Jimmy won two Super Bowls.
Pete Carroll won one.

Who else had a successful career?

Schnellenberger was OC for the undefeated Dolphins and then won it all at Miami U. So he went the other way. You might have a few like that, with OC/DC success at one level or the other but not head coach at both.

Schnellenberger was doing the "Muppet character but football coach" thing long before Orgeron.

Dick Vermeil?

He wasn't a college coach for long, but did win the Rose Bowl.

I think Jim Harbough would have been as successful as his brother if he didn't get screwed by Baalke and that experience left him with such a distaste for the NFL he's probably never coming back.
