Welcome folks, and happy “228th Anniversary of the founding of the New York Stock Exchange” week! The NYSE was formed when twenty four brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement, setting a floor on the rate of commission charged to clients and binding each signatory to give preference to the other signatories in securities sales. So the game was rigged from the start. Stonks! You may all celebrate by playing a game where you tank a commodity price.

This week is chunkier than usual, mostly full of AA releases or below. There’s no absolute standouts, but a lot of games that I’m 75% interested in; the kind you baulk at on first release but would happily try on sale or GamePass.

Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl is a throwback to the NES 8-bit brawler days. It’s Double Dragon refracted through the View Askewniverse. This game was originally created only as a reward for backers of Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch, a multiplayer hack’n’slasher with character combos and RPG-lite features that features voicework by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith. Doing voicework for Silent Bob has got to be the easiest gig in voice acting history, but it’s reassuring to know it’s Kevin Smith not speaking, rather than anyone else. Anyway, Chronic Blunt Punch has hit some delays, so Mall Brawl has been pushed out the door and told to get earning. By all accounts, it plays like it was made for the NES “D-pad, 2-button” controllers. This is one for the retronauts and fans who still say “Snoochie boochies.”

Outbreak: Endless Nightmares is a sequel to survival-horror shooter Outbreak: Nightmare Chronicles, and the fifth in a series that stubbornly plays like the original Silent Hill. To mix it up this time around, they’ve added roguelike gameplay elements; specifically, proc-gen levels and level-scaled enemies. I get the feeling that anyone who would like this game is probably still playing Resident Evil Village.

There’s plenty of the 2019 Steam catalog coming to consoles, including Sunless Skies, which takes the opportunity to drop the tweaks and overhauls from its Sovereign Edition at the same time. Rust: Console Edition will finally let players squint at UI text from their couches as they try to build and survive in this DayZ-meets-Minecraft multiplayer game. On the flipside, PC players will get to play, and hopefully mod, the underrated (in that it’s not overrated) former Sony ‘sclusy, Days Gone.

Who keeps buying these Leisure Suit Larry games? Why do they keep spreading onto every console, while laughing about all the bad reviews they got on their previous release? I’m either getting old, or game markets are weird. Or both.

Tiny Heroes 2 is a sequel to the ubiquitous mobile tower defence game, however its gameplay is turn-based XCOM-lite fare.

The game with the best soundtrack this week is Aerial_Knight's Never Yield, a very stylish, always-running, 3D side-scroller set in Detroit. It’s got a rhythm game vibe as you match the flow of your running and vaulting with the funky grooves and bars of Detroit artist, Danime-Sama.

Also out this week is a game that looks like it was named after someone faceplanted onto a keyboard, void tRrLM();++ //Void Terrarium++. It is another rogue-lite, RPG dungeon-crawler, where you play a robot who scours dungeons for materials and upgrades because… you have a sickly girl imprisoned in a glass bottle and have to keep her alive? The trailers are cryptic, but bottle-girl is real.

If you enjoyed the creepy puppet TV show in Control, you may enjoy Cosmic Top Secret, a Danish adventure game in which the heroine is trying to uncover her parents’ role in the Danish Secret Service during the Cold War. The world looks like a puppet theatre, with paper and cardboard sets and characters that look like craft puppets.

Otherwise, there’s Knockout City, the extreme dodgeball game, Just Die Already, an old person mayhem game that is already being dubbed “Grand Father Auto”, or Rising Hell, which asks the question, “What if Shovel Knight, but you went up instead of down and it was Heavy Metal?” Or there’s always the RPG-tavern-management simulator, Crossroads Inn.

In a week like this, I have to pick a GOTW outside of my wheelhouse. In previous years, I would have just gone with the XCOM-alike, but I’ve since learned that XCOM-alikes are not like pizza: when they are bad, they just suck. Instead, I am taken by the smooth grooves of Aerial_Knight's Never Yield. It’s like Ferris Bueller’s frantic backyard run, as animated by the folks who did Into the Spider-Verse.

Nocturne's remaster and Miitopia this week? Man, it's almost like a pre-Covid release week with too much interesting stuff.

Jay and Silent Bob?
