Felix “My favourite game on the Citadel” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “54th Anniversary of Are You Experienced?” week! Jimi Hendrix’s debut album was so earth-shattering, other music megastars quaked. After this album dropped, The Beatles never toured again and Eric Clapton took up heroin. Coincidence? You may all celebrate by playing a game with a gun in your hand.
Subnautica: Below Zero thaws out from a lengthy Early Access period and melts over all the platforms this week. Subnautica got props as an aquatic survival game: a No Aquaman’s Ocean or Under Wilds, if you will. Below Zero is an expandalone set in a new, arctic zone on planet numberletter. For the first time, it includes land to traverse: icy, snowy, unstable land. You’ll need to manage warmth as a new resource, on top of the usual hunger, thirst, health, and oxygen. Most of the new features are well-known, having been introduced and polished during the past 2 years of crowdsourced QA Early Access: new vehicles, gadgets, and leviathans. The big unknown is the as-yet-unseen story mode. Details are sketchy, but it promises to be more than just a list of objectives in your journal. This game looks crisp, and collecting stuff to craft is 36% of what I do in any game I play. I tend to drift away from survival games, though a decent narrative hook could pull me through.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition lands this week and looks like a great reason to revisit the whole trilogy and its 40-odd bits of DLC. This is like rewatching a Criterion Collection 4K edition of your favourite TV series. The performance and gameplay tweaks make everything a lot sharper and this-gen: more and better character customisation, higher-res textures, and everything smoothed out more consistently over the 3 games. Mass Effect obviously needed the most work: its combat, inventory system, and Mako have been revamped—with a toggle for the diehards who want to keep the classic Mako handling. It’s been nearly 10 years since Mass Effect 3, long enough that I am relishing the prospect of taking a new FemShep through the complete saga. GOTW.
Rounding out the list, 1-bit strategy game Death Crown hits the consoles, a new episode drops in D&D MMORPG Neverwinter, and there’s a bunch of ports on Switch. Really, the biggest action this week is underwater or in space. If you can just get your mind together…

Brilliant.

From Friday I will be doing nothing but Mass Effect, and a couple of mandatory work meetings. Took the half day without meetings as leave. I'm ready!
I'm not jelly, you're jelly!

"Ball Twist" sounds pretty great though. I will not be Googling it to find out.

Yes, I learned pretty early on for TWA that, when googling titles for research, you have to add "VIDEOGAME" to make sure you don't get on a list somewhere (probably still on a list somewhere)
