Welcome folks, and happy “761st Anniversary of Kublai’s election to Kublai Khan” week! Kublai was the horse-nomad who settled down, applying Chinese bureaucracy to the huge empire conquered by his ancestors and unifying China along the way. You may all celebrate by playing Fallout: New Vegas. Again.

Resident Evil Village looms largest this week, standing as tall as its stunning big boss, Lady Dimitrescu. Her castle is equally stunning, with its pointy spires reaching out of the fog. You’re back as Ethan Winters, exploring a spooky, ultra-gothic, European village. The graphics and art direction are just amazing. Everything is kept in first-person to maintain suspense. There’ll be crafting for upgrades, inventory tetris, and jump scares; so many jump scares and psych-outs. There’s a bunch of multiplayer features, too, but does anyone play Resident Evil for the multiplayer?

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is filling an interesting niche. It’s a multiplayer stealth game, set in a kind of Game of Thrones version of Robin Hood. Robin and his crew (who all have different abilities) must team up to pull off a heist, for example infiltrating the Sheriff of Nottingham’s keep to steal a treasure. First you must steal a key, then you discover a vault, which you have to raid, and then escape. The guard AI is very adaptive, Left 4 Dead-style, and will hit various alert levels during different stages of the heist. Stealth is essential because the merry folks cannot survive if heavy reinforcements arrive. The extra twist? You’re competing with another band of outlaws with the same objective. This puts time pressure on; no crouching in corners for 10 minutes, watching a guard’s patrol pattern to make absolutely sure he always goes through a door, like you can do in single-person stealth games. It also opens up tactical questions: does your team try to be first to the treasure, or instead set up an ambush for the other team when they get it? There aren’t many competitive, multiplayer stealth games out there, so this is worth a look.

There’s no particularly unique Switch games this week. Raiden IV x Mikado Remix is a remake of the 2007 shmup with a new soundtrack. Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition is a side-scrolling, action-platforming, roguelite that will have you jumping and shooting your way through a pixelated castle, building your combo meter, and unlocking upgrade cards.

Otherwise, Dragon Quest Builders 2 makes its way to Xboxes and therefore, GamePass. The very chilled-lookin’ Skate City glides into play this week; what tricks does it have to drag you away from the excellent Tony Hawk games?

My GOTW goes to the big dog: Resident Evil Village. The single-player experience looks like this year’s horror blockbuster. Strap yourselves in.

Raiden for the Switch. I'll wait for Resident Evil Village Gold edition because of course Capcom.

I know nothing about Village other than the Big Lady. And I don't mean that figuratively, I literally know nothing about how the game in how it plays, what there is to do, etc, except that lady. That's some effective viral marketing.

I am curious about Hood, though I'm pretty sure I'm aged out of these types of games due to my erratic gaming schedule.

Darn it Game Pass, unlock Builders 2 NOW! I'm impatient.

Best summary based on the demo and marketing (well, for those paying attention to Capcom's YouTube channel at least): just as Resident Evil VII was an interesting reinterpretation of the original game in first-person, Resident Evil Village is a reinterpretation of Resident Evil 4 in first-person, only a bit more on-the-nose in terms of scenery. However, it's also a departure in that we're now doing vampires and werewolves 20 years after they were the pop culture flavor of choice, but managing to bring it back! Also back: merchants, money, weapon upgrades, and a shift away from exploring one small environment in a maze-like fashion to a larger environment in a more linear fashion (that's the feel I get from the demo at least, though not so large or linear as RE4). The only thing missing is the boy scout snark and humor of Leon versus a bunch of self-serious B-movie horror villains.

It's gonna be interesting!

Bought Builders 2 on a Switch sale ages ago. Haven't played it yet and now it's on Game Pass. Hmm...should I play it there instead?

I saw some article a few weeks ago talking about how based on Lady Dimitrescu's size you don't want her stepping on you and it felt like it was trying to say without saying how you don't want her to have sex with you.

Death by snu-snu.

Of course, for all I know she's the first boss and after you defeat her in the first hour and a half of the game you never hear from her again.

Nah, you gotta kill her daughters first. Maybe her brother. She's probably the last one you face before the final boss, and potentially face her several times in several different mutated forms.

I mean, it's a Resident Evil game, after all.

EDIT: Looks like there's enemies I didn't even know about. But man, this game's got some special levels of promotion in Japan.
