Welcome folks, and happy “67th Anniversary of the release of The Seven Samurai” week! This iconic Kurosawa movie was a technical and creative watershed that had long-lasting influence on Japanese and Western cinema. Just think, without The Seven Samurai, there would be no Three Amigos. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you get the crew together for one last mission.

It’s a quiet week for big new releases. There are a few corkers just over the horizon—if they aren’t delayed.

There is one big ‘sclusy this week: Returnal on PS5. It’s a third-person, action-horror roguelike. You’re an astronaut who crash-landed on an alien planet filled with various biomes, presented as rooms. Every time you die, the biomes reset and you lose most of your stuff. The combat is bullet-hellish, and the game warns you that it is hard. Will folks find it challenging or frustrating? It certainly looks very slick.

R-Type Final 2 is an old-school, horizontal shmup with new-school graphics and upgrade systems.

Taiwan Monster Fruit says it’s an exciting, parkour-style, motion-sensing game that offers challenging, co-operative multiplayer. After watching 4 trailers, I’m still baffled as to what you actually do in the game. It looks colourful, though.

Crime Opera: The Butterfly Effect is a visual novel where you follow the story of a crime family from when they are kids all the way to when they’re all growed up.

New Pokémon Snap is a sequel to the 1999 Nintendo 64 game. It’s a first-person photographer where you travel around on an on-rails hovercraft and take photos of Pokemon. It looks lush and very chill.

Total War: Rome Remastered brings a bunch of quality-of-life improvements as well as graphical upgrades. There’s 16 new, playable factions, mod support, and crossplay. If you already own the original game, the remastered version is half-price.

While I like the look of the Total War: Rome Remaster, I’ve never Total War’d and probably won’t start now. If I want to get my Rome on, I’m more enticed by last week’s Civ 6 update and its large Mediterannean maps. Instead, Returnal gets my GOTW. It’s a bit of a shakeup of the Sony ‘sclusy formula; let’s see how gamers enjoy the challenge. Maybe any brutal, difficulty spikes will be ironed out by the time I eventually get a PS5.

I’m quite intrigued by New Pokémon Snap. I love the concept, the art direction, and the chance to leave wild Pokémon well-enough alone—aside from tossing out handfuls of ecosystem-shattering fruit and “C’mon, runt! You can dance better’n that!” Illumina Orbs. I enjoy photography in real life, but I worry the novelty here will quickly fade and the score-chase won’t keep my attention. But I’ll still spend the $60 just so I can hand the controller off to my kids and bask in the radiance of their inner-shutterbug as they round a bend and come face-to-face with their favorite ‘mon.

Is there any early news on Returnal? My PS5 is jonesing for a new game (that isn't a free PS5 patch for a PS4 original), and while the trailer looked really nice, it was also very confusing.

I guess I'm worried it's a 6-10 hour game for $70.

Is Antichulius pulling rank?

No one knows, so don't preorder. The previews are only for the first two hours or something like that and everything has been positive, but Sony has been keeping this more under wraps than is normal imho. I love Housemarque and I hope this is a stepping stone for them, but I'm still frightened for this release.

That said, since it is Housemarque riffing on roguelite formula, I have a feeling the gameplay can be endless, if you so choose.

Early impressions are quite positive, but they are only from the first few hours. I'm optimistic based on what I've been reading and a couple videos I've watched. You can find more over in the Returnal thread.

As far as game length, it's likely to be similar to any other rogue-like/lite with procedural generation. If you don't like that kind of repetition, this doesn't look to be any different. If a myriad of gear/ability combinations and incremental improvements appeals to you, there should be plenty of game to play with.

Heh, of course Anti is elite enough to know how do do the e’s with accents for Pokémon

I don't see the English localization of Touken Ranbu on this list, even though it launched on April 27th. You've all failed me.
Also, I love that you all are using the actual "é", it's just... glorious. As is this list of releases. So much great gaming for everyone, it's really amazing.
