Welcome folks, and happy “94th Anniversary of Mae West being convicted for obscenity” week! It was for her role in a Broadway play she wrote, called Sex. The nationwide publicity West garnered from her 10-day jail sentence (shortened to 8 for good behaviour) helped launch her Hollywood career. West became mass media’s first sex symbol, but she was also a savvy actor with a social conscience—she was an early advocate for gay rights and against segregation. You may all celebrate by playing a game where the female lead has some wicked one-liners.

As was pointed out by CptDomano last week, MLB The Show 21 comes out on regular release (and GamePass) this week—last week was the VIP preorder release date.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is an updated version of NieR Replicant, which was only released in Japan. It’s a prequel to NieR: Automata. There’s more voice acting, with both re-recorded dialogue and new voicework for characters who previously didn’t have it. There’s also new soundtrack music, new scenarios, a new boss, and as is the style of remasters today, previously-cut content has been restored and put back in. The 11-decimal-place version number was chosen because it’s approximately the square root of 1.5, whatever that means.

Judgment is a next-gen version of a 2018 game that was also big in Japan. It’s a spinoff of the Yakuza games. This time, you’re on the side of law enforcement, playing a lawyer-turned-detective solving cases and battling Yakuza on the streets. The graphics look a lot like Yakuza 6 and the combat is a lot like Yakuza 0. There’s an extensive friendship system where you can build bonds with most of the NPCs and get sidequests from them; however, don’t expect characters from other Yakuza games to pop up. The devs chose to run with a new cast of characters to keep the game distinct. In an odd bit of trivia, the original game was pulled from Japanese shelves in 2019 because one of its voice actors was arrested for cocaine use. They scrubbed his likeness from the game, remodelling his character. Cancelling an artist's work for drug use sets a risky precedent… I mean, what art would be left?

MotoGP 21 brings a new season of two-wheeled racing. New features include better AI, brake temperature is now a thing, and if you fall off your bike, instead of respawning, you actually have to run back to your bike and get back on.

On the indie front, World Splitter is a 2D platformer with the gimmick that each level is split between two parallel worlds, marked by a dividing line. You can control this line, rotating it and moving it to make terrain appear or disappear. Smelter is a 16-bit hybrid that flips between arcadey 2D platforming and top-down strategy. You expand territory and build your base, then when you annex new areas, you zoom into action-platforming.

There’s also a bunch of Atelier digital art books coming out this week.

On the Switch, there’s no exclusives, but a bunch of cross-platform releases. Buildings Have Feelings Too! is a city manager where the buildings all have personalities and talk to you about their needs and fears. They can walk, too. An old factory might be sad that it’s not being used much anymore, while the neighbouring buildings are glad it’s not stinking up the place. A rundown dock might be slated for demolition and OMG the surrounding shops will not shut up about it. I’ve no idea how it plays, but the concept is interesting enough. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is structurally like the 2D Zelda games, but you’re a turnip that has been evicted by an evil vegetable government for not paying taxes. You have to pay back your debt, travelling the overworld, “evading tax” by finding and ripping up as many tax documents as you can, then heading into dungeons for treasure and more tax evasion. Tax evasion has never been more righteous and fun!

For me, the GOTW is a close race between Judgment and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…. I’ve always been FaR, in that I’ve never NieRed, but this seems a must-have for fans. Judgment edges it out by a whisker, because I like the sound of the friendship-building and Matthew Mercer does a voice in the English dub.

Comments

Ah, the halcyon days where remakes, remasters and re-releases are battling out for front page supremacy. Lol

Hollywood owes a lot to Mae West, but I had no idea she was progressive like that. Neat.

I see the Atelier series is getting a collection re-release to ride the Ryza sales wave. Can't blame them, the series chugged along for a long time before finally having a true hit. (Oh, it's merely a repackaging of games already out on the respective systems for $90. $30 a pop isn't a bad deal but $90 is an ouchy to the wallet.)
