Welcome folks, and happy International Women’s Day! It was originally conceived in 1910 as International Working Women’s Day, when women across Europe marched in recognition of women’s role in the achievements of the labour movement, including 8-hour days and paid leave. Its continued observance reminds us that there is still much to be done to achieve equality. You may all celebrate by playing a dynasty game where a character gets an easier ride because of the struggles of its forebears.

It’s another mixed bag this week with no major tentpole games, but a bunch of remasters to fluff out the PS5 and Xbox Series X catalogues.

Lazy Chess is chess for noobs. The AI will offer you a handful of the best possible moves each turn, each of which could win the match. After you pick the move, it will reveal which was best. It has the usual chess game accoutrements: scenarios, online and local multiplayer, and plenty of stats. Best of all, it’s free!

Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse - Part 1: Hall Pass To Hell is based on the webcomic—if you think movies based on games have a poor track record, they are all blockbusters compared to games based on webcomics. It came out on the Switch in 2020 and has managed to garner zero reviews and zero FAQs. It was Kickstarted though, so go figure. One for the diehards only.

Monster Energy Supercross - The Official Videogame 4 brings this sports game franchise up to feature parity with most of the other sports game heavy-hitters, with a career mode, rudimentary upgrade system, and a free-roam, challenge area. You can also make your own tracks. Plus, there’s increased customisation: now you can choose from dozens more brands to plaster over your rider’s outfit.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is a remaster of last year’s PS4/Xbox game. It’s odd to recall a time when these action-platform mascots were platform-exclusive champions of the console wars. For those of you who get the mascots mixed up, Crash Bandicoot is the franchise that Naughty Dog cut its teeth on in the PS1 era before going on to become the HBO of games. Now the reins have been handed over to Toys for Bob, the devs of Star Control and, more infamously, the inventors of Skylanders. Storywise, this is a sequel to the last of the Naughty Dog games, in case anyone can remember the story from a 1998 game. A common theme in the reviews last year was that this one also brings back the fist-chewing difficulty spikes of those 1990s-era platformers.

Speaking of 1990s gameplay, Stronghold Warlords is an RTS ‘castle sim’ set in East Asia. Command Mongol hordes, Vietnamese warriors, or just send an ox carrying gunpowder barrels to blow a hole in your enemy’s walls.

Then there’s Heaven Dust, an isometric, Resident Evil-type game that has PG-level horror. There’s also Doodle Devil: 3volution, the diabolical sequel to Doodle God.

The Switch is finally getting Apex Legends this week, maybe a year after everyone’s bored with it. It’s a lucky dip this week. I burnt my fingers on last week’s GOTW pick, so I’m feeling more cautious. I’ll give the GOTW to Stronghold Warlords because it has Mongols in it, and it's like the kids’ menu version of Total War: Three Kingdoms.

New Stronghold, eh? Let me guess, the castle building gets better while the combat stays the same? Been that way for 20+ years...

Siralim is one of those crazy indie series that takes Pokemon and ups the ante on everything. The game has so many features I don't even know all of them. Lol. Shame that the pixel art's quality varies greatly as I'd love to spend more time in these titles than I do.

if you think movies based on games have a poor track record, they are all blockbusters compared to games based on webcomics.

I was gonna be all "well actually", but then I realized that Kingdom of Loathing wasn't even based on a webcomic after all.

I guess the Penny Arcade games were serviceable JPG clones?

So that Cyanide and Happiness game is finally coming out, huh? Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse - Part 1: Hall Pass To Hell it is, soonish.

I enjoyed Cyanide & Happiness long, long ago. Now it reminds me too much of crap I'd see on 4chan.

I recently was dabbling in Crusader and watched a review for Warlords. After watching the review I think your comment sums it up pretty well. It also seems like the economy is still something to be heavily "gamed" instead of mimicking a somewhat realistic model. I will pass or wait for a heavy discount.
