Elden Ring Catch-all

Anyone else playing on Series X? The frame rate was never amazing but the opening area of the DLC is brutal. It’s so bad I’m getting motion sickness.

I'm playing on Series S and I haven't had any issues.

Y’ever beat a boss totally unexpectedly, when you were just experimenting?

That’s what happened with the Shadow Keep boss. It initially felt like a road block when I encountered him a few weeks ago, before vacation.

Apologies for asking such a basic question here, but is there a universally preferred platform for Elden Ring? My son wants to start playing this summer, and with Prime Day (today and tomorrow) there are sales on XBox versions, though he and I usually tend towards PC games. Any advice appreciated!

I can only say this - don't buy the PS version unless you want to also get PSN+. I bought it on the PS because it looked better than on my PC and when I let PSN+ lapse I Elden Ring would no long allow online play - meaning no co-op, no invaders, etc.

I am not sure if the Xbox version requires a gaming subscription.

I do know that the PC version does not require an extra subscription for online features.

Xbox requires GamePass for co-op and multiplayer. I believe it's the Ultimate level which is $16.99/month.

There's no preferred platform. It's equally popular across all platforms as far as I'm aware.

ALL THE TIME! To the point where it happens more often than not. Latest, I was getting my but kicked by Messmer, a week or so ago, so went off and did some other stuff. I went on week vacation then came back and beat a Sunflower boss. With a false sense of confidence I decided to go back to Messmer with my vanilla game dual wield Katanas. I was in the "F-it" mindset to just mess around but Mimic and I beat him on the third try..

During my gameplay I got summoned to defend players multiple times. Which never happened in the base game. Not sure what changed. My equipment didn't really change. So pretty sure that wasn't it.

Did lead to one fun situation where the guy tried hiding behind an enemy. Colossal swords don't care about that. I'll hit both at the same time.

Woof, Bayle certainly seems like a piece of work.

You probably know this but the ring can be activated and deactivated. Maybe it wasn't activated in the base game? It is about the same rate for me when I have it activated. Sometimes 5x in an hour and other times nothing for a couple days.

My goodness Abyssal Woods are something completely different & like a freaking maze, I must have looped back on myself 3 times, all from different routes.

I've respecced again, I want to use more of the intelligence/faith weapons so just went with 24 faith + 24 intelligence then mostly Dex but an all around build so I switch weapons when the need arises.

I'm currently dual wielding Milady + Renalla's Twin Blades (well one of them) & it's devastating. I can use the sword of night & flame again too. I'm making sure I've at least two +9 boss weapons in every category so I can dual wield & get the special L1 attack with the power stance that has you letting rip with both weapons.

Yeah, the Abyssal woods are something else.

That build sounds incredible. You can’t beat landing on a combo of weapons and skills that truly suit you.

I personally thought the Abyssal woods area kinda sucked. It was big, mostly empty, and you couldn't use your mount.

I adored the atmosphere and the few, uniquely intimidating enemies that are there.

It was kinda creepy initially, but as you say... it's just sorta empty. Feels like there was supposed to be more there. Like, there's a whole part of the map south of

Spoiler:

Midra's Manse

that it seems like you should have been able to get to (but can't).

I agree. Seems like a missed opportunity to pull off something Bloodbornesque in that area. Very empty and not much to do or find.

Likewise didn't enjoy it. It was a good idea just poorly executed.

Restarted my game using the Seamless Co-op, and am going for a "beat you to death with a large object" build.

Shymlark and I beat the boss at the end of the raised green plateaus that you reach via Shadow Keep. Feels like we must be closing in on an ending but I have no idea really.

Im stuck on the final boss and need help. Has to be the most insanely unfair 2nd phase of all time. What the f*ck were they thinking with this?

I just spent about 2 hours, respec'd 2x, used a bunch if max level builds with multiple NPCs and not even close to taking him out. Absolutely brutal design.

To the left of the castle or right?

Oh, left along the long bridge.

Yeah I found it super rough. Even with my mimic it's so jumpy. And that grab. I hate hugs. If you don't have near max shado I would go do that instead. That said a heavy shield build helped on the second phase. Since all those rapid fire quick attacks can just be blocked. Couple that with the talisman that boost estaus flask healing. My 15 flask were just enough. Eventually.

Quick note on that for anyone who may not know:

Spoiler:

You can use Miquella's Great Rune as an item to remove the debuff from the first grab. Doing so will prevent the second one from "working".

What builds did you try? Talismans?

If you haven't tried stacking holy resist, try that. I was a heavy faith build and had great success starting phase 2 by standing my ground and casting Lord's Divine Fortification, which increases holy resist by 60%. I managed to take him down solo at Scadu Blessing 11 because of how much that spell lowered the phase 2 damage.

I didn't have any Haligdrake talismans on me at the time for more holy resistance. If I was really struggling, I would have gone to find the +2 or +3 version and used that too. With that and Lord's Divine Fortification, I bet you barely notice the holy damage in phase 2. If you don't want to build any faith, just use a Holyproof Dried Liver at the start of phase 2. You can easily farm the materials and craft as many as you need.

That's how I took down Radagon and Elden Beast on my first try in the base game. I had over 80% holy resist for that fight and never came close to dying. Elemental resist is broken against bosses that deal a lot of elemental damage because you can stack so much of it. The final DLC boss also deals a lot of physical damage, so it won't be as much of a guaranteed win as it is against Radagon, but it will help a lot.

Just in case others are struggling with dying too quickly, this is a good video to watch:

Advice

I've gone through my entire 250 hour playthrough using melee builds with Mimic tear and only had a few struggles. This Radahn fight is so absurd. I switched to a int/faith build and even with your advice I'm still getting destroyed. Can't get him before 25%. I have a good armor set, holy negation, spell buffs, using Lord of Divine, Golden Vow and Impenetrable Thorns for my offensive. I have Mimic Tear, Thollier and Sir A summoned and even with all that he curb stomps me every time. I must be on 50 attempts at this point and it's really frustrating. I'm close to Sekiro level rage with these bullshit AOE spam attacks in phase 2. There's hardly any opening to attack.

Is the NPC actually helpful? In some cases it actually raises the bosses health. Doesn't apply to to spirit ashes. But yeah sometimes bosses I basically hitting a wall to get that last chunk of health. Sekiro was worse imo. Spent 5ish hours straight on the final boss on that one.

Oh and if you have a poisoned meatball equipped I think mimics will occasionally use it to heal. How helpful that'll be is rather random.

Edit - he just killed me with no health left on his bar. None. Not a sliver. Empty bar.

Edit #2 - I finally beat this bastard with just Mimic Tear. It seems summoning the other two NPCs was either increasing his health bar and/or giving him a strong buff.

You give us all hope!

Messmer down second try last night (third try over all.) it was one of those runs that felt like luck was in my favour. My random rolling, combined with timely aggro stealing, got me out of trouble and my desperate life saving chugs of crimson tears were completed without punishment. If that run hadn’t worked I can see it taking me many more tries.

He looked so intimidating in the trailers. I really thought he was going to be a massive roadblock.

This shield enabled me to easily take down the final DLC boss. Highly recommend if you're struggling.
