Welcome folks, and happy “146th Anniversary of the first organised ice hockey game” week! Although a rudimentary form of ice hockey had existed for years, this game in Montreal was the first time a wooden puck was used (instead of a ball) and score was officially kept. You may all celebrate by playing the game where you can make little Wayne Gretzky’s head bleed.

The term “Souls-like” gets thrown around a lot these days, but it especially applies to Mortal Shell, which mimics the aesthetic, combat, death mechanics, and even the UI of Dark Souls. It’s shorter, and has a few variations to combat and leveling, but it’s 83% the same.

Asdivine Cross is a JRPG coming to Xbox from 3DS, via mobile. Kill It With Fire is the tongue-in-cheek, spider-extermination FPS where you assemble an arsenal ranging from a vacuum cleaner to a rocket launcher, and everything in between. If your reaction to seeing a creepy-crawly at home is to burn the entire place down and then move interstate, then this is the game for you.

Under the Jolly Roger is an open-world, pirate RPG by Russian devs, Herocraft. It’s like Sid Meier’s Pirates! with Black Flag combat, but jankier. It was originally a mobile game called Tempest, which could explain some of the jank. Sprinkle in some supernatural elements, such as giant Kraken and skeleton warriors guarding hidden treasure, and you got this game goin’. It’s already out on Switch and PS4, and since Pirates! never came out on those systems, this is the closest you can get. It could be the best 6/10 game you play this year.

Harvest Moon: One World brings another dose of tranquil farming simulation. Developed (or stolen, depending on how deep you run in the fandom) by Natsume, One World offers more variety in types of biomes to farm in, plus you have to explore and find Harvest Wisps to get the seeds you need for more varied crops.

Maquette is this week’s art-puzzler. It’s published by Annapurna Interactive—a stamp of quality that nudges it into prominence above the ceaseless tide of un-curated indies. There’s a romantic narrative featuring voice acting by real-life married actors, Bryce Dallas Howard and Seth Gabel. The keyword for the puzzling is “recursive”: the levels nest smaller versions of themselves like Russian dolls. Move a small object in one part, and its bigger version will also move.

My GOTW is Under the Jolly Roger. I’m ignoring the reports of jank and diving in because I haven’t been able to play Pirates! since my PSP was stolen in 2012, and it’s driving me nuts.

I'm curious to see if you actually do give Jolly Roger a go. It looks crap, but in a loving way. I guess that's the definition of jank in that they tried to do something they couldn't quite pull off but it's kinda there.

Maquette looks interesting to a degree I wasn't expecting and make me want to stick my head out a window and yell "VIDEO GAMES!"

I'm here for Maquette.

The VR title A Fisherman's Tale uses the same recursive space mechanic, which is bananas with the immersion of VR. Interested to see if the same gimmick hits quite as hard without it.

I have it downloaded on PS4, which is apparently jankier than the Switch version ... planning to try it out tonight

EDIT: And wow, does it throw you in the deep end. No splash screen, no "new game" button, just straight into a tutorial about sailing. The tutorial messages blink off before you know what buttons do what. Then missions. Nothing seems actually broken yet, just a very abrupt start.

Gotten anywhere with the game or too much jank?

I played it for about another hour ... then the next day, I picked Immortals Fenyx Rising on sale on my lunch break at work, was pretty much charmed by it as soon as I started it up and haven't gone back.
