NFL 2021: The offseason and draft thread

Now you know why my best recruitment offer was Fresno State!

On April 15th, Aldon Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

On April 17th, Aldon Smith apparently beat someone up at a French Press Coffee House in Louisiana. He is wanted by police for 2nd degree battery.

A few days from now when they attend Trey Lance's Pro Day, his odds will probably improve too if anyone happens to catch Shanahan on camera looking happy.

Ya don't say, past *Legion*?

Here's the current betting odds for the #3 pick. Fields remains the favorite, although at +105 and not -140 like he had been. Jones has slid from +110 down to +180. Lance has nearly caught up to Jones, going from the +400 range up to +210:

Alex Smith retires.

Apparently Urban Meyer was trying to bring him to Jacksonville. It sounds like there may be interest in getting him to go to Jacksonville to be QB coach.

I would happily accept Alex Smith being Trevor Lawrence's QB coach because it would mean Brian Schottenheimer isn't doing it.

When Lawrence starts checking down all the time, we will all know why.

Checkdowns are all he's gonna have time for anyway with Cam Robinson at left tackle.

WHO AT THE RAIDERS THOUGHT THAT TWEET WAS A GOOD IDEA

HOW DO YOU DO THAT AND HIT SEND

HOW

HOW

HOW

Oh, it's worse. Look at the tweet. Look in the upper-left corner.

They sent it.

They got criticized for it.

Then they pinned the tweet.

It was none other than Mark Davis. That puts a different spin on Amy Trask's tweet about Al Davis raining lightning down on whoever's responsible.

Absolute Brain Genius.

Are the Packers trading Jordan Love to the Patriots?

That's the rumor based on a photo snapped allegedly from inside a Packers team office. In the photo is a piece of paper that seems to chart out a trade proposal between the Packers and Patriots.

The trade terms on the page suggest the Patriots would trade down from their #15 pick to Green Bay's #29 pick, and get Love plus a 4th rounder, #142.

Value-wise, at least, the proposal makes sense. Pick #15 is 1050 points on the trade chart. Pick #29 is 640 and #142 is 35. So there's 375 points of value difference before we add in Love. Love was pick #26 last year which is 700 points, though obviously Love has one year on his deal used up, and players are valued less than an unused pick. So knock a decent chunk of Love's puck's 700 point starting value, and you've got a deal that's equitable from a pick valuation perspective.

Alas, it seems likely to be a fake. Some Twitter users are claiming the source of this is a person that's been caught trying to pass off a similar fake before.

But it was fun for a few paragraphs.

I know none of us give two sh!ts about the Bengals, and probably several of y'all don't realize that they're an actual NFL team, but, hey, they have new uniforms.

The TL,DR version: They're pretty much like the old ones, but the colors have been toned down a bit and the jerseys look a little less busy.

I like the black, not a big fan of the orange as there's too much orange.

Unlike some of the other jersey changes this one actually looks different, which is nice, but they also avoided the digital clock lettering so it's automatically a win for everyone involved.

I'm 100% in favor of the removal of the stripe down the side of the body, aka the pit sweat trail.

The only thing I don't like is the pant stripes. It's a vertical stripe with the pattern in the horizontal direction, which just makes it look cut off, like a piece of scrap fabric applied to the pant. Especially on the white pants.

I think they should have gone back to making the pattern run in the vertical direction, running with the stripe, which is exactly how it used to be:

Really I would have just used this stripe. It basically acts as a continuation of the helmet stripes, rather than being a completely different stripe pattern with the completely opposite orientation. Plus I tend to lean towards reintroducing classic uniform elements anyway.

Overall though, I appreciate the removal of unnecessarily busy elements in favor of a cleaner and simpler design that should hold up better long-term.

Full body tiger stripes.

So glad you spent time on this post and not your draft preview.

I'm a fan of any uniform redesign that does not include horrible color gradients, stupid "ATL" abbreviations, weird color combos, or alarm clock fonts. The Bengals new digs are . . . fine. They're not awful, they're not great, but they get credit for not screwing it up.

So this means the draft preview ... is coming?

Either that, or it got eaten by the critters on the other side of the Wall.

Edit: Of course, it could mean the draft preview will never get here. You can never tell with George R.R.R.R.R. Martin.

Justin Fields has epilepsy. Perhaps that was a known thing in nfl circles and possibly explains the relative lack of love heading his way.

It's not his skin color, obv.

So did Alan Faneca. Took his medication to manage it and it wasn't an issue.

Sounds like big pharma found a new spokesman for their epilepsy meds!

So you're saying Justin Fields is just a tool of Big Pharma and that's one more reason the 49ers are taking Mac Jones?

He's just going to hand it off to a couple of hacks to televise with extra problematic content.

Browns exercise Baker's 5th year. I'm only mentioning it because it took so long to do.

We're they trying to extend him on the cheap and he wouldn't budge?

Did they want to make him shake in his boots?

ARE THEY DRAFTING A QB?!?

J/k... I hope.

We're trading Baker, OBJ and a second to ATL for the fourth pick (and thus Justin Fields)

KC is trading their 1st, and three other picks in the 2021 & 2022 drafts (unknown which ones) to the Ravens for Orlando Browns and one pick in the 2021 & 2022 drafts. From Schefter.

Edit: Here's the breakdown.

Kansas City gets:
OT Orlando Brown
2021 second-round pick (No. 58)
2022 6th round pick

Baltimore gets:
2021 first-round pick (No. 31)
2021 third-round pick (No. 94)
2021 fourth-round pick (No. 136)
2022 fifth-round pick

Hmm. Not sure who the winner is here long-term, though KC wins in the immediate term.

Orlando Brown is good, but not elite. I get that he was unhappy in Baltimore because he couldn't play left tackle (and get paid like a left tackle), but the Ravens definitely aren't better off with him gone.

Baltimore gets 762 pts of trade value plus a '22 5th, KC gets Brown and 320 pts of trade value plus a '22 6th. That's 442 pts of pick value differential this year, and the '22 5th vs the 6th counts for probably about 15 more. So round to 460 points of differential for Brown. That's a mid 2nd round pick.

Of course, the kicker is that Brown is in the final year of his deal and will require either franchising or extending. Supposedly the Chiefs are going to have him play out the final year of his deal. It seems likely thanks to his age and the difficulty of finding good tackles that he's likely to get significantly overpaid, assuming he doesn't take another step forward this year (which could happen, he's improved his grade each year at PFF, if only incrementally).

Should point out that Eric Fisher graded quite a bit better than Brown last year at PFF (16th best tackle vs. 25th) and Mitchell Schwartz was only a little behind him (30th). Will be interesting to see what those two sign for vs. Brown's eventual extension.
