Valheim - Valhallall, Meadhallall, Shieldwallall

New Hearth and Home update info!

Hearth and Home is arriving tomorrow.

If you want to check everything new in the game without spoilers then don't check the trailer or patch notes, otherwise

Patch notes

A whopping 175MB download for Hearth & Home - nearly 1/5th of the install size!

Some people complain when they buy a game and it ends up being a tiny download - like, they're concerned about the dollars-per-byte ratio or something - but I'm always way more impressed by a great game with a tiny download/install footprint.

I've been reading a bit about the update because they recommend starting a new world if you want to experience all the changes as intended. Turns out that if you don't want to do that you need to drop and pick up stuff again in order to trigger the new things, and also new resources WILL NOT appear in EXPLORED areas.

Anyone starting over and want to share a sever? I didn’t get into this game initially due to time but hey I’m funemployed so may give it another whirl.

I installed docker on my old computer and got the Valheim dedicated server running. I don't want to open it to all as it probably can't handle 50 people's bases everywhere like the main GWJ server, but anyone who is planning on playing in the evening PST, I would be open to having some company.

Intriguing. I would be up for it. Jaya likely too.

Are people no longer using the other servers?

Edit: There's discussion on discord about doing a map reset. Due to the new resources are only found in unexplored areas.

Before we do that, I would like to grab some stuff and move it to a private instance.

Yeah that is a good idea - maybe give a day or two and some notice so people can do that. I don't want to build anything new but i do want to get back into when the new areas are in and I don't want to start from scratch. Thanks!

I've rolled all of my important stuff into a private server in case I ever do need it, but I've also deleted my character and have started again.
I can't wait for the new GWJ server to explore

I was thinking of giving us till the 22nd to gather what we need from the current server and then start over with a new map to take advantage of all the new stuff

Ranalin,
Are you looking at that for both servers? I'm still somewhat actively building and connecting my multiple monoliths on Server 2 (where Roo, Malor and I were most active.) Let me know if resetting them both, as it will take a significant amount of time to pull all my resources out...so I'll try to start in the AM - haha. Cheers.

Thanks

Can the db files be extracted? I know that on my server it backs up to a zip file every hour and I could take that zip and open it on my local machine. Maybe a solution could be to make a current backup available so people can just get to their stuff that way (or continue what they are doing locally).

Yeah the plan is to do both. I got clearance from Roo and figured the rest of you were on board.

I'll save the file as kazar suggested

Ran,
Working on it this AM. Started a new personal server to get the same vision of new changes, and taking pics of old things If you can give me part of tomorrow to get everything out, would appreciate it...but working it now!

Cheers

I just reinstalled my machine and don't have FTP software on it yet. To cut time spent at the desk i just put in a ticket to support to have them do the reset after 16:00 EST. They're rarely johnny-on-the-spot so it could happen then or between that and 00:00am. When i get confirmation i'll let folks know here and on discord.

Great googly-moogly! Valheim VR actually works. What an absolute treat, and an astonishing piece of hackery.

I took a raft about 50 meters off shore and got The Fear something terrible, before jibing for all I was worth and heading back to dry land. Outstanding.

Ooooooh...very curious. Is there a link to the hack?

Why sure!

There's a bug with the skybox looking funny, but don't be deterred! It goes away on the second load.

Hmm, very intriguing, even just for a look...

Oh, I should have said: don't try to watch the initial bird-flight sequence if you start a new character, at least if you have any sensitivity to VR sickness. The camera jumps around. Best to wait till you have landed, or just load an existing character.

If you have an existing world, I would heartily recommend seeing it in VR. For me, it's got me really hooked on Valheim. I tried it earlier, and I could tell it's a great game, but (modded) Skyrim VR has spoiled me and I couldn't get into Valheim on the monitor.

OMG. I have had no real interest in VR up to this point.

Up to this point....

ENABLE ME.

Enablement? That's a great game! Let's see...

At the end of a hard day's adventuring, who doesn't want to sit down by the fire[1], marvel at the glory of Odin's creation under the setting sun, and cook off a dozen pork chops over a crackling fire?

Prefer venison? Take up your spear and get low to sneak up on Eikythr's kin. Deliver the telling blow with one or both hands[2], or try your luck from a distance by hurling (for reals) your weapon with all your might[3].

Looking for some real excitement? Wait for stiff breeze and go for a walk on the shore, or maybe even push the boat out, and feel your mighty Viking heart tremble before the awesome power of Ægir's domain as the swell looms up above your feeble form and threatens to swallow you whole[4].

If you have a hefty PC, and can reach an internal agreement about interacting with Facebook, all of this can be yours for about $USD320. If you are fortunate enough to have a 5GHz router that you can hardwire to the aforementioned PC, then you'll save $USD20 on the USB cable and can do all this wirelessly.

--- END ENABLEMENT ---

The tricky thing about VR is you simply can't tell if it will work for you until you actually "jack in" and try it. I feel like there is some kind of innate, neurological affinity level that differs between people. Some people straight-up get sick[5]. For others, it just doesn't click. I came in through flight sims and some people in the community are like "I tried it, but it was a bit harder to identify targets so I put it back in the box and went back to my monitor". That astonishes me. I'm at the other extreme. I was like:

I'm in the plane...
I'm IN the plane...
I'M IN THE MUFFIN PLANE!!! OMGARG I'VE WAITED MY WHOLE LIFE FOR THIS MOMENT!!! ARGLLL

Now I can't really get into first-person-ey games that are not in VR.

You're mileage is almost guaranteed to vary.

[1] Your VR body can glitch out a bit when sitting down, but it's still relaxing.
[2] Two-handed spear wielding is supported, which lets you work your quads with some dramatic lunging.
[3] There are three different modes of spear throwing. Some are glitchy, all are challenging.
[4] Water around your feet looks a bit funny, but the towering swell is truly a thing of terrible beauty.
[5] This invariably improves with practice, but I was lucky from the start.

How does the VR interaction stuff work? I guess you swing your weapon like you'd expect to? Are menus/building weird?

Excellent questions. The VR interaction is better than I would have expected for a mod, and is better than, say, unmodded Skyrim. Most of the weapon behaviours you would expect are there, and some that I didn't expect, too, like spear throwing and two-handed wielding. I'm not sure if weapon parry exists; I haven't tried. Even chopping wood is oddly satisfying (though not as satisfying as in real life. By crikey, do I love chopping wood in real life).

Building is perfectly doable, but it is harder to catch the snap points, because it's just harder to hold a motion controller still in free space than it is to hold a laser mouse still on a pad. The bonus is, you're building at real scale with real depth perception.

I could probably stream a live QA on the Discord if people are really keen for answers :D.

EDIT: The menus are totally fine, you can even split stacks when you get used to the bindings. They are also rendered in world space, which I really appreciate, because it means you can physically walk closer to them if you need to see details.

I posted on discord about this, but wanted to post here and let folks know that i closed down the Valheim servers i had.

I had issues with SurvivalServers.com and do NOT recommend them anymore.

Thanks so very much for the time we had together on your servers, ranalin.
