Valheim - Valhallall, Meadhallall, Shieldwallall

Steam Link

A beautiful, procedurally generated, survival building/crafting Viking game for 1-10 players. It's in Early Access as of this post but like several other recent ones it feels so polished and so full of content that for $20 USD I'm already happy with the money spent.

GWJ Servers: Just search '#GWJ' in the server filter and you'll find several.

Edit Saturday February 27th, 2021 3:50am:

Due to some recent suspicious activity, we'll be doing a password change for the two GWJ servers Ranalin is hosting for us. Please see this post for further details. Thank you! ~Amoebic

I’m definitely interested. If we can get a few other folks interested I’d love to start a server.

A server would rock. I'm not sure what our options are there, can you do a dedicated server?

Looks like it will do a dedicated server just fine, including under Linux, which is extra-nice. Or you can rent one; they link to G-Portal, which will rent a ten-slot server for $14/mo. Might be easier to do it that way.

edit: note that there are claims of possible malware in the game, and the devs don't seem to be stepping in to reassure anyone.

Malware? Based on what? This?

If I read the thread right, its a false positive that Malware Bytes will resolve in an update.

Ranalin started a server, details are:

Go to Steam >> View >> Servers Select Favorites tab Add a server put in the IP and port; 104.254.233.234:2657 save it
Server Name: #GWJstanRag
pwd: stanGWJ

You may want to friend Ranalin in steam to make it easier to find him in the friends tab under servers

Survival games are not always my cup of tea, but this one looked interesting enough to give it a shot.

Played with a couple of friends for a few hours today and had a ton of fun! I most appreciate that there's no hunger or thirst, instead food just acts as a type of buff. Makes it feel like much more of an exploration game which is cool.

I also really like the art style for some reason. Makes me feel like I'm playing a late 90s/early 2000s MMO With corpse runs and everything! We set up a nice base, defended it a couple of times, cleared a couple of dungeons and took down the first boss. The only thing I'm maybe not a fan of is corpse runs but it seems easy enough to set up new checkpoints as you go if you want. We didn't explore that far out yet although that's probably next for us.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised. Seems well worth the $20 and if you are like me it might be a survival-style game that might click for you. I'm certainly looking forward to digging in more.

I really appreciate that your characters skills and inventory are persistent across worlds, so I can hop into a friends games for awhile and still retain some of the progression for my single player game.

We killed the 2nd boss (The Elder) last night and got lucky and found the merchant not far from the boss spawn.

I had taken a boat to get there because it was quite a distance to the south. Setup the other end of a teleporter so others could follow.

When it was all over i still needed to take the boat back and luckily the wind was in our favor for once.

Tambora decided to ride back instead of using the teleporter. Along the way I kinda veered a bit out of the way of the return path and we noticed this island with some kind of nodes on it. We stopped and jumped out to take a look. It was barnacles and we started collecting. I asked him as we're starting if this looked like a creature. Because in my experience in games barnacles are on ships and creatures. We both did a shrug and went back to collecting and all of the sudden the 'creature' moved. We scrambled like crazy to get out of there and before we were gone it had went underwater. It did not attack.

The exploration part of this game is amazing! We now ended up with a small amount of chitin which is used for harpoons and a very nice dagger. Now need to find it again!

Just started and joined Ranalin server. I'm useless and almost died first night...trying to build some shelter somewhere (lot of constructions already). BTW, look up on the night...

I got on last night and find this game very engaging. Like others, I find the graphics comforting maybe even nostalgic. The world is rich and the physics lethal (watch out for falling trees!). And to think I was just about to buy a new rig so I can play Tarkov with EdgarNewt. Now I don't have to.

Jaya

Yup, killed by a tree I was falling. Plus occasionally the tree you're falling takes out another tree. This game gets a thumbs up from me.

I have a server up, also, but it's EU based, same as my Ark cluster was.

Not trying to sway any people, but putting it out there in case it helps EU GWJers.

I am interested. Have only played about 10 minutes so far. Since we are friends on steam will it be easy enough to find your server?

A few buddies and I picked this up.

I had one of those nights in about a 30 second span. Made a shelter, put my bed down and tried to rest. Come to find out you need a fire nearby. Punch a hole in the floor of my elevated shelter and dropped a fire pit down. Lit myself on fire and died as I laid down to rest, respawned and died of smoke inhalation and died a 3rd time as I lit myself on fire trying to make it to the door. Proceeded to rage destroy my shelter I had just spent 45 minutes creating while everyone was laughing at me.

The wife and girls and I just finished up the current content in Raft, and were looking for a new game. Stumbled across this one, and picked up four copies. We haven't progressed too far yet, but are having a blast. Great game, and really liking the building system in it too.

So last night i got online with the intention of locating a swamp. Swamp is the area where you find Iron which is the next tier above bronze.

That said, I jumped into my boat and took off. We have another massive island to our south and my plan was to sail past that to look around.

I ended up coming across a biome called 'The Plains'. I backed track a bit so I could set up a workbench and bed. As i'm placing a wall down i hear something. I turn around and it's a little goblin thing running at me and just destroys me with one hit, and as i'm being respawned i hear him going to town on my boat.

So i respawn and borrow another boat and sail all the way back (against the wind of course). I'm able to recover my corpse, but that's it.

Sail back to find out from Gaald that Kazar actually found a Swamp area the night before and when he logs on a bit later we set out on another adventure. We created a forward base just south of the swamp for a location for our teleporter and was able to set up some walls to protect it. With that up and protected Tambora and Kazar had to log. Nlink and i went exploring and found a Crypt not that far in.

So a quick word about the Swamp. You need to be in bronze gear or upgraded troll gear, and stam/health regen food. There's blobs, duagars, fire creatures, leeches... Then elite versions of all those lovelies...

Within the crypt is where you'll find iron scraps and a handful of other new mats. Iron scraps smelts down to Iron plates with a 1:1 ratio. This unlocks a slew of new items. We also had to fight mobs down there as well and it was not pretty. Oh you also need to have pickaxe, preferably bronze, because to move through you have tear down muck walls blocking the way.

So we made multiple trips and stored the scraps at the near by camp. We then did 3 very long and annoying runs through combination of dark forest and meadows back to hour homes because you can't teleport ore or refined metals.

I first made 100 iron nails and made this beauty!

Is it 10 people on at the same time? Is PvP on or off? Thanks

10 concurrent player limit, we definitely have over 10 unique people on Ranalin's server. PvP is off by default, each player who wants to PvP has to open their menu and enable it by hitting the two swords icon.

And that only opens themselves to incoming player damage. So it requires mutual consent. Such a great design.

However there's really no way to secure your property. You're really meant to play cooperatively with all members of your server. (I stole five rocks from ... someone, last night, just a chest in a house as I was borrowing their workshop for repairs)

Thinking of picking this up. Do I have to be at the same level/progress to join your server?

This seems like an AMAZING family game!!

No, anyone can hop on at any time. Max 10 at once, but it chugs real hard if too many of you are together. Sweet spot seems to be 3-4 people in groups.

PVP is optional. I think both parties have to have it on to fight. Not sure, we should test that sometime.

That's a whole lotta sales for an small studio survival game... Hopefully it means they really can make a big thing out of this, longer term. Would be interesting to see if their initial success changes their roadmap..

I think Odin willed it!

There's the speculative roadmap they released last week.

Good, I hope they stick to it and the success so far allows them to realize their vision with some amount security. How many times have we seen a successful EA game go off the rails because that success provided the devs the ability to dream big and they ended up with a mess? This game does not deserve the Star Citizen curse.

I picked up the game last night, logged in and ran around briefly to grab some wood/rocks/etc to make starting gear, when I ran across the first settlement that is really close to the initial spawn in. Their name starts with an R but I forget the rest, so could I ask anyone that isn't using the forum name to put their names below, so I can get an idea of who you are.

I am using my forum name, so no mistaking me.

Oh yeah, whoever created the settlement that has the "Free Gear" chest in front of their main room, you are very much appreciated!

Lastly, I skated around some sort of giant (no idea what level) when I was being chased by a couple of Greykins (sp?) and swam across the small river to land on the other side, which had them swim after me and I was able to take them out with my lowly club.

Marking for future interest....looks great.

Thanks to Omni and friends for showing me the ropes last night. I like what I've seen so far. I found the building interface a little hard to get used to. I would constantly forget that I need my hammer equipped then wonder why it wasn't working. Having the hammer equipped just seems like an unnecessary step to me. It's a surprisingly pretty game, with great lighting.

Another me issue is that I'm playing this and Dyson Sphere Program at the moment. In DSP you press and hold the middle mouse button to look around. In Valheim the middle mouse button destroys your structures! Yeah, that's going to be annoying until I can get used to it.

It irks me that you can't open chests while in the hammer build mode, you have to change item, open chest, get resource, switch back to hammer.

I'm sure these kind of things will get streamlined.

I also hope that they reconsider mod support, it really does give these kind of games a great deal of replayability and customisation.. But for now, in still at stage 1 of the game, so a lot still to discover!

Breakfast is coming along nicely...

I've been getting comfortable tapping R to quickly unequip to grab from a chest, then tapping R again to reequip the hammer.

Just entered bronze on my solo game and I'm still enjoying my experience. I don't think I could keep up with a coop game, but I really appreciate folks hosting.
