Cal football can be summed in a nutshell with this...
After completely rolling over and allowing WSU to march down the field and score on its first possession, Cal comes back and scores on its first, giving the Cal fans its worst enemy.. hope.
Then the fun begins...
Cal botches the snap on the XP.. for the 3rd time in 3 weeks a placekick snap goes awry, Cal now trails 7-6. We grumble on how we have the worst special teams for the 20th year in a row.
Thinking our horrible Defense is just going to yield again, it actually holds WSU and they are forced to punt on 4th and 7 on their own side of the field.
Then, Cal blocks the punt! We rescind our previous statement and now have the best special teams in the country! but wait... one of WSU's upmen picks up the ball and runs for the first down... WSU goes on to score another TD and Cal doesn't do anything for the rest of the game.
I've seen a lot of football, college and NFL, and I don't think I've ever seen the punting team recover its own blocked punt and run for a first down..... so here we are 40 years later and we are still paying for The Play.
Sonny Dykes' 1-win first season generally gets excused since it was his first and the cupboard was bare save for the #1 overall pick at QB. This is Justin Wilcox 4th (maybe 5th?) season, and it has shown significant regression. I like Wilcox.... I want him to succeed...but I think his time may just about be up.

Good news, Cal is on Bye this week so i'll join you. Unfortunately 1) Cal still has to play after this week so only one week of respite for me, but the upside, expectation is now zero so can just enjoy going to one of the best places to watch football (environment/geography, definitely not product on the field or gameday atmosphere), 2) our next game back is against your Oregon Ducks. I'm hoping they feel the same way you do, though I'm not sure Cal playing like its life depended on it can beat an Oregon team that's quit after losing to stanfurd. We're 2 weeks out so no line.. but I'll just come out and say Oregon -24.5 
I'm really interested to see if any changes are made at the QB spot given they have 2 weeks to prepare for the next game. Anthony Brown is just not good enough. During the preseason it sounded like there was a little bit of a QB battle between Brown and Thompson but I'm not sure if the young QB is ready to take over or not. I'm guessing they roll with Brown but if he struggles in the 1st half against Cal he gets pulled.
If you're QB struggles against Cal, then you never should have been #3 to begin with
Fresno still getting a handful of top 25 votes. Looks like they're in prime position to repeat their usual format:
1) Get ranked early
2) Lose ranking in a road loss to a MWC team
3) Beat Boise only because the game's in Fresno
4) Face off with a 5th place PAC-12 team in the Las Vegas Bowl
5) Sneak back into the top 25 in the final post-bowl rankings if they win
Yikes, CJ Verdell and Bennett Williams done for the season, our offensive coordinator might miss another game because of an "non covid illness" and Anthony Brown will continue to start at QB because "he gives us the best chance of winning". Congrats Cal, things are looking good for you guys to beat Oregon.
