Welcome folks, and happy “57th Anniversary of The Beatles’ first #1 hit” week! The song was I Wanna Hold Your Hand. I first got into The Beatles the way most kids of my generation did: by listening to them when my parents bought the CD Box Set that came out in 1988, then arguing with my friends who had vinyl purist parents about which versions were better. You may all celebrate by feeling old.

There’s a bunch of remasters and GOTY editions this week, including 2019 GWJ Community GOTY, Control, the seemingly-underappreciated Nioh 2, and JRPG Ys IX: Mostrum Nox. The 2019 PC game Project Winter gets a console port, probably to capitalize on the hot trend of betrayal games. It’s set in a wintry wilderness that requires co-operation to survive, but there’s a traitor in your midst!

As for new games, there’s a side-scrolling shmup, Habroxia 2—note that the PC version requires a controller. If you prefer your shmups to be done in traditional Chinese ink art and to the sound of a traditional Chinese Guqin (a horizontal, plucked-string instrument), there’s Flying Girls. PS4 and PS5 are getting Destruction AllStars, a multiplayer, vehicle-smashing, demolition-derby type game. But your round isn’t over if you lose your car—drivers on foot have a few things they can do to take out or hijack other vehicles and regain the advantage. On the Switch, there’s the new indie puzzle-platformer Blue Fire (also on PC) and the visual novel Byakko-tai Samurai Boys.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood is made by French devs, Cyanide Studios, who made Call of Cthulhu, a 2018 survival-horror game. They also made that 2012 Game of Thrones action-RPG that no one remembers—the one I played for 10 hours more than I should have simply because it was there between seasons 2 and 3 of the show. Earthblood is an action-RPG based on the tabletop RPG, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and certainly has better production values than Cyanide’s earlier games. Your character can shift between 3 forms: human, pure wolf, and giant wolfman, which serves up a very Deus Ex menu of gameplay choices: human for social interaction/tech, wolf for stealth, and wolfman for open combat. There’s even stealth vents to crawl through; presumably the wolf has had his claws trimmed.

Vampire: The Masquerade had its time in the moon; now it’s the werewolves’ turn. Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood is GOTW.

One of us has a skewed memory because I'd imagine most kids in my generation learned about the Beatles from the gramophone radio. You remember that thing?

Ys IX is on my agenda, but I'll be waiting on the Switch release + a discount. I'm not huge into the talky talky version of Ys games started with VIII. Keep it short, concise, Falcom. We've got plenty of words in your Trails games.

Not gonna lie, I barely knew the Beatles until I moved away from the UK, to the US where they seem to have much more residual cultural cachet.

I remember when radio actually played songs from the 60s and 70s -- now the "Classic Hits" stations barely go past the 80s.

Although I knew about The Beatles from the radio, I didn't really "get into" The Beatles in a deeper sense, ie learning about the albums etc, until the Box Set.

Maybe UK music fans don't need The Beatles any more because they have Oasis

Huh, interesting theory.
