Yes, sometime this Friday.

I am extremely excited to play. My daughter has been asking about it ever since we finished our creative playthrough of the original. She's vibrating with excitement over when we can start playing together. Too bad for her that doesn't happen until I finish on my own first.

I was holding out hope they'd update even before the big go live.

I couldn't resist playing through, so i'm basically waiting at the point where the story currently ends. Crossing my fingers that I don't have to restart from the beginning when the final update goes live

I did the same thing... back in December when the release was supposed to be imminent :/ This time I think you're actually safe. For me its been so long I will probably just watch someone else do the ending.

Out of Early Access!

Nice, I'm looking forward to playing it now. I've owned it for a while and just farted around in the first water area.

Have played for 1.5 hours so far. Feels identical to the original with a temperature gauge when on land, dangerous weather, and more flora to interact with.

The story is intriguing and the setting is familiar but different. I love the inclusion of the resource finding tool.

and finished!

The ending was pretty much directly from where i left off in the EA version

Spoiler:

I wonder if the ending is a setup for their next game? It's a potentially VERY different setting. And I really like the "best buds" dynamic of the main character and her alien chum. I would like to see more of that!

Really really really loving this. It's exactly the same as Subnautica with some new mechanics and a much larger variety of flora and fauna.

I was concerned that the story was going to be a retread but everything about it is quite different.

Minor spoiler:

Spoiler:

I met a living person! With an actual character model!

not only that but... (re: the same character)

Spoiler:

it's a character from the first game who's only otherwise heard in audio-logs, The mercenary trying to keep the crashed rich family alive before getting exasperated with them and striking out alone.

Spoiler:

Yeah, I didn't want to get into specifics. It was implied she died and was cool to see her alive and relatively well. I haven't progressed that part of the story much but it's a good way of saying "maybe other people...like your sister...are alive too".

Correct me if I'm wrong. Did the initial early access have you playing as Sam instead? I remember being there on the planet and the ice collapsing in front of me and stuff.

If so I think that's a cool way to reward players who bought in early. Great iteration on what the first Subnautica brought to the table. I'm enjoying my time with it.

Just finished it. Love it but it is much shorter, smaller, and more linear than the first one. In some ways that's an improvement but I expected to spend a few more days with the game. I also didn't think the vehicles were as interesting as in the original. I do think the Seatruck is a great concept that they didn't fully capitalize on.

Pretty much summed up my thoughts too.

Is this a standalone sequel or more like DLC that requires the original?

100% standalone sequel.

It started out as DLC but quickly became it's own thing. Very few returning assets and every biome is completely different. Story follows the events of the original.

The story comes after the events of the first one but there is basically 0 connection between the two. They stand fully alone as separate stories.

Wouldn't say 0 connection...

The main corporation, plus a certain character... That and you'll be doing a lot of the same gathering to build a lot of the same things.

I mean story connection. They're the same game with independent stories. I love both but they are the same game.

Yeah, fair call.

I’ve had a good time with this one and got most of the way through, but I don’t think I’m going to finish it. Just going around in circles in dangerous caves looking for extremely well hidden alien facilities is not a lot of fun.

Yeah, that was my experience with the first one. The lack of a map really impacted my enjoyment of the game. Using a lot of beacons just cluttered up my view and made it difficult to figure out which beacon I was actually heading towards. I finally just used cheat codes to give me what I needed to see the ending.

You can turn beacons off.

I found this one much easier to navigate. The only time I got lost was in the underwater crevasse filled with sea anemones.

The snowy cavey above ground valley was the worst. I spent too many hours going back and forth up there.

Same. I still don’t understand how I kept getting lost around and going around in circles up there for so long.

I finished Below Zero and I liked the ending more than the original. I only used the Prawn suit once, upgraded its depth module but didn't really need it. I didn't enjoy the above ground snow sections, felt tedious and with the lack of interesting flora/fauna made it easy to get lost.

Spoiler:

Once you get the proximity defense upgrade for your truck there's nothing to fear anymore, just zap when they're about to grab you. That made the last parts in the crystal caves less interesting.

I'm kind of lost now with video games wishing there was more Subnautica and not really interested in anything else. I'm just wishing for more underwater biomes to discover.
