The Traditional Steam Winter Sale 2020 Catch-All

I think it says a lot about the state of gaming at the end of 2020 that we are now several hours into the Steam Winter Sale and only now is someone getting around to starting the thread.

Yeah, I get it. Steam sales aren't what they used to be. With no flash or daily deals there isn't any real reason to follow it. They don't even have a metagame anymore; just voting for the Steam Awards.

Arguably, the Steam Sale has become kinda obsolete. With all the bundles and constant sales from other platforms, Steam Sales are hardly something to be excited about anymore.

But, a tradition is a tradition. And so, here we are...

For myself, looking through things, I... might pick up some DLC for Planet Coaster? And maybe Generation Zero? if I can convince my local group to go for it?

Beyond that... who knows. Anyone see anything that jumps out as a must-buy?

Jurrassic World Evolution is on sale for $5. I've seen some real enthusiasm for it despite some pretty strong flaws.

Project Aura and Code 7 were on my wishlist for cheap, so I got em. No idea what they're about.

Code 7

Picked up Hades because of the GotY thread! For $5 more than Epic, I can family share it with my brother, hopefully repaying the hours I got from his Witcher 3.

I never got into the sale metagames and the ones in the last few sales were so obtuse I mostly just heard about how nobody understood how they worked.

That said I do have to admit that while the way things are now is certainly more convenient the sales were a lot more exciting when they had the dailies and flash deals.

I had heard great things about Oxenfree and with a 50% discount, I finally pulled the trigger at around $2.00 USD

Please Note; it's not that I felt the game wasn't worth it at a higher price point, I just really hate spending too much money on games that will only end up on my pile...

I hope to carve out some time for it somewhere between Hades and my return to League of Legends.

Oxenfree was pretty nice.

Outer Wilds for 40% off seems decent, for anyone who haven't played it (I assume it might be cheaper on Epic though).

Other than that, meh. As usual, the best thing during Steam sales, tend to be all others sales.

I've been waffling back and forth on Battle Brothers. I bought it, played it a bit, liked it, was told about the developers' refusal to add women characters, refunded it, but I can't stop thinking about it and might buy it again regardless of the developers' behavior. Ugh.

I got a new computer earlier this year with a Nvidia 2070 Super and might be in the market for something fun to put it through it's paces (but not just looking for graphics). I haven't paid much attention to games in the past few years, because my old PC probably wouldn't handle them. Anyone want to share their thoughts as to what might be the best bang for my buck?

Looking at my wishlist I see:
Borderlands 3 ($19.79) - I love Borderlands 2 but it seems BL3 may not have the staying power that 2 had.
Outer Worlds ($29.99) - This one flew under my radar, but I just found out about it and I love Fallout 3 and 4.
and the wildcard NieR:Automata ($19.99) which just looks cool to me, but I know little else.

I see there's season pass options for both Borderlands 3 and Outer Worlds, which would double the price of each if I wanted to go all in. Or I could also wait until a better deal/complete edition is out.

Apparently the "Legends" mod has female characters and a ton of other great enhancements.

I think I saw somewhere that this is going to be one of the Epic freebies.

I would wait until December 31st, as Jurassic World Evolution should be free on the Epic Games Store.

Edit: Note to self, actually read the whole thread before commenting...

As for myself, I'm on the fence about picking up Sea of Thieves, but otherwise there is very little on my wishlist that I'd want to grab as I'm bouncing between The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk and Destiny 2 at the moment. UBOAT getting close to -50% off is tempting, and I would grab Mars Horizon if it was a deeper cut than 10% (not surprising as that just released not long ago though).

It is. It really is. So good.

Cant say I liked Outer Worlds nor Borderlands 3 much. I mean, BL3 is very much more Borderlands, so if you really liked that, it is good. I just feel each entry has gotten worse.
Borderlands 3 might be a lot cheaper on Epic Store right now as well (hard to tell due to regional pricing)

Outer Worlds. Well, it is a take on Bethesda Fallout games, so if you like those (which I do), definitely worth a try. It isn't bad as such. As a fanboy of the company who made it, just also not as good as one could have hoped. Note that you can get this through Microsoft Game Pass too!

My wife recently got a gaming laptop and I've heard that she is getting a Steam card. I'm always on the lookout for underappreciated gems.

Glass Masquerade is $1.74, and it's a nice relaxing jigsaw puzzle type game that I've enjoyed recently. There are additional puzzles as DLC and a sequel.

Picked up The Outer Wilds, Shortest Trip to Earth, and Disco Elysium. $50 total.

Other than some cheap DLC and the game I didn't know I wanted until it was on sale (TBD), I'm good.

Even getting games on Steam for ease of playing is cheaper lately on Fanatical, IndieGala, or GreenManGaming most of the time. And Humble Bundles of course.

Steam sale is ok for whatever game is going. Steam Awards again? Yeah, whatever.

But actual lowest price on games, it's not the place to be anymore.

For instance, Control Ultimate Edition for $20 seems good. But with Augmented Steam, or a check to isthereanydeal.com, you see it's currently $17 at IndieGala.

Yup, IsThereAnyDeal is basically the best place to check as you don't have to go hunt down deals. Of everything on my waitlist (~20 games) the only one that Steam wins on for discount is UBOAT. Every other game that's heavily discounted is still cheaper somewhere else.

Used to love the Steam sales, seeing how often it crashed and hitting F5 repeatedly

Ah the irony of voting for 10 games in the steam sale you’ve never played because the people voting are all 10 years old apparently. Just so I can get 10 meaningless cards. I’m such a corporate wet dream.......

Speaking of which - the Epic Store and its £10 voucher means most of what I want it so much cheaper there than it is on Steam. Star Wars Squadrons for £11 (less that $15), the Outer Worlds for £15 (less than $20) not to mention their free game giveaways. I’ve done the majority of my games shopping there for the winter sales I have to confess.

However - still a few things I’m eyeing up for steam. WH40K Mechanicus, a couple of DLC packs for Stellaris and Surviving Mars. The Outer Wilds maybe. I’ve done pretty well for gaming this year, I suspect I might actually get time to play most of them given the UK has now turned into a mutant plague island.

With the rise of free Epic games and various game passes, I get involved in the Steam Sales less and less. DLC for games I already own will be the most likely purchases. I still enjoy browsing it though.

Edit: I bought The Long Dark on a recent Steam Sale for approx £5. Then figured £5 is still £5, and if I'm not likely to play it any time soon that £5 is better in my pocket, so I refunded it. Less than a week later and it's free on the Epic store.

After wrapping up a couple of rpgs this year, I am in the mood for a good tactics game, so I bought the Battletech Mercenary Collection – 30€ seems like a good deal. Additionally, I picked up Wingspan. The Three Moves Ahead episode about it makes it sound like the best video game version of a board game you can get at the moment.

When comparison shopping, don't forget PC Gamepass. Someone earlier mentioned Oxenfree, which is currently included with Gamepass.

Yeah, I mostly just use the winter sale as an excuse to get my friends/family Christmas gifts these days. Might get a few things for myself though. Looking at Life is Strange 2, Doom (2016), and Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls right now. Maybe Outer Wilds too.

Grabbed the ACC GT4 expansion because it finally seemed worth it at $13. Nothing else on my wish list is on enough of a sale for me yet at this point.

Sadly it's not yet compatible with the latest DLC, but I'll get it once it is. It looks amazing.

Grabbed Outer Wilds for $14.99.

Thanks, PurEvil, for the tip about IsThereAnyDeal. I used it to confirm that the Outer Wilds best deal was on Steam right now.

Actually... it's $14,99 on the Epic Store as well, but they have a $10 coupon that you can apply, making it $4.99 there.

Doesn't it need to be $15 or more on the Epic store for the coupon to be valid? 1 cent short!

I'll check. I'm pretty sure it was $14.99 or more....

I stand corrected!

^I think there are a few games at $14.98 on the site, just to avoid that, though. And I think buying something with the coupon triggers another coupon, and you can just keep doing that. I'm thinking of grabbing Outer Wilds ($4.99), Outer Worlds ($19.99) and Disco Elysium ($13.99), all after coupons.
