Welcome folks, and happy “52nd Anniversary of Richard Dodd returning a book to the University of Cincinnati medical library” week! The noteworthy part of this story is that the book, Medical Reports on the Effects of Water, Cold and Warm, as a Remedy in Fever and Febrile Diseases, Whether Applied to the Surface of the Body, or Used Internally, was 145 years overdue, having been checked out by Dodd’s great-grandfather in 1823. The late fine, had it been enforced, would have amounted to about $22,646 (or $149,074 in today’s money). You may all celebrate by playing a game with a broken economy.

Cyberpunk 2077 drops this week; for many, it’s the most anticipated game of the year. Sadly, the developer has burned up any goodwill I had for this game. CDPR is claiming artistic cred for including trans representation—indeed, it chose to use a source material that provides fertile ground for a thoughtful look at trans-ness. But the treatment seems more exploitative than representative, and when actual trans folks raised issues during development, CDPR repeatedly dismissed their concerns, often quite rudely. That doesn’t bode well for a “thoughtful treatment” of the subject. It’s a bit like how CDPR made romance in the first Witcher game into a soft-pron ‘sexcard’ collection game, turning Geralt into a cad and doing him a huge disservice compared to the books. Eventually, CDPR came good, and most agree that the third game in that series was pretty decent. Maybe we hold off until Cyberpunk 2079.

Conversely, there was no such dismissiveness by CDPR when gamers complained (often quite rudely) about the game being delayed. Instead, just very apologetic responses along the lines of “we shall double our efforts” (whatever that meant for backroom staff and crunch). Who cares about mistreating people, as long as the games come out on time. I’m tired of the “asshole genius” trope and the idea that aiming for high quality excuses all manner of sins. I’m also tired of studios pandering to loud edgelords while feeling that they can alienate others at no cost. I can’t play this game when I know that so many others will feel left out. So, I’ll pass on Cyberpunk 2077. Have fun with those genital sliders.

Now, I have to find an actual GOTW and the pickings are pretty slim. While I admire the moxie of the games with “Cyber” or “Cyberpunk” in their titles this week, they may all be ignored. Destiny 2 hits the new consoles, while Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond brings this WW2 shooter series to VR.

Drawn to Life: Two Realms is the latest entry in this quirky, cult series that also offers great latitude in how you create your character. You can essentially draw your own, and the game will animate it for you, or you can choose from a huge pool of presets. There’s hours of puzzle-platforming on offer, including interesting Mario Maker-type levels where you can place items on a grid beforehand to help you get through. This is a great pick for anyone who’s missing the DS years. GOTW.

Before I opened the thread I knew Cyberpunk wouldn't earn GOTW. I too am still interested in the game, but I'm super leery that they've leaned into their edge lord side more than I'd like. You know, taking "mature" to mean the wrong things.

But I can generally look past that if the systems underneath are interesting.

Ofc this means I expect they aren't exploiting trans folks as much as I fear they might. The pre-release stuff has been a mess, so there's a good chance it's awful. Hopefully not. I hope they've heard and learned...

Thanks, I usually ignore Polygon reviews (I know Arthur isn't there anymore, but he ruined that place for me), but Carolyn is such a good reviewer. Seriously one of the best.

Her review is encouraging to me. Sure sounds like they didn't go much further into exploiting trans bodies. That I'm considering that a win shows you how low my expectations were...

The point about the game feeling like it's rooted in the 1980s take on the future is fascinating. Says a lot about where it's made and the devs. Can't say I'm a fan that this is the angle they took on the story and world, but I guess it kind of makes sense seeing as their take on the Witcher was uber grimdark.

I continue to be interested in the game, mostly because it's my type of game, but I wish it was a little more grown up. Focusing on sex and dropping f-bombs does seem like it was made by folks from the 1980s... And stuck there.
