Welcome folks, and happy “1,004th Anniversary of King Canute of Denmark claiming the throne of England” week! He got a bad rap for arrogance after an anecdote spread about him standing on a beach and commanding the tide not to wet his feet, but the original point of his exercise was to demonstrate the folly of regarding kings as omnipotent. You may all celebrate by listening to Fortunate Son.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is (aside from being a crime against spelling and punctuation) another ancient Greek, open-world game by Ubisoft, but this one leans into mythology and its legendary roster of monsters; there’s no Spartan-Athenian politics like in AC: Odyssey. The super-colourful palette and lush art style are evoking comparisons to Breath of the Wild, and it’s also managed to recreate some of that BotW vibe, where the environment beckons you to explore it—many other Ubisoft worlds can feel like there’s an impatient tour guide tapping a clipboard at you. I’ve no idea if this warm, fuzzy feeling could last for dozens of hours, but it made a strong first impression. GOTW.

It’s kinda crazy that Ubisoft has put out three big, open-world games within a month, but they all have their own flavour and take the familiar formula in different directions. For a while, I was worried that Ubisoft was smooshing all its games into a singularity, so I appreciate the divergence.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light is the 30th anniversary edition of the first-ever Fire Emblem game. It’s not a remaster, so it’s still as 16-bit as ever, but it’s the first time the game has been localised for English-speakers and released outside Japan.

Twin Mirror is the first episode in a new game from episodic-narrative-game specialists, Dontnod Entertainment. It’s an investigative, psychological thriller. The main character returns to his West Virginian hometown to bury a friend, wakes up amnesic and covered in blood, and it all unravels from there. Armed with his trusty Mind Palace, he must interact with the environment and make dialogue choices to solve the mystery. The lead writer claimed he was influenced by games like Space Quest, but hopefully there isn’t something that you can do in the first 10 minutes that will ruin your game in the final episode.

I’ll make a parochial shout-out to Aussie-made, Project Wingman. No, it’s not a dating sim about helping your best mate get some; it’s a flight sim. You fly current-day jets in a near-future, alt-Earth. While it’s aiming to be more “pick up and play” than “true simulator”, it looks like HOTAS is compulsory for genuine mastery. The single-player campaign looks solid, as does the roguelike, Conquest mode, plus it’s all VR enabled. A good option for anyone who feels the need, the need for speed.

Empire of Sin is the latest from John and Brenda Romero. It may be reductive to call it XCOM with wiseguys, but that’s a starting point. You’re a prohibition-era mob boss building your empire and recruiting your goons, and occasionally turn-based combat will break out. There’s a bunch of subtle things going on with how your goons develop traits and how the economy works, and it looks like a roaring good time. It wuz robbed.

Comments

Thanks, as always, for this list!

Empire of Sin, already got that one as I loved the Mafia series and a top/down mob game is what I have been wanting for awhile.

Chronos: Before the Ashes, this one intrigues me because I really enjoy Remnant of the Ashes. This one is melee focused but I am waiting on reviews since soulslike melee games have been done, a lot. Giving them the benefit of the doubt since Remnant was a breath of fresh air and this one seems to be a quasi-sequel?

Immortals Fenyx Rising looks really good. Tough sell for me since it's sandwiched between AC Valhalla and upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. Rumor is we can expect reviews tomorrow but initial vibe is it's good.

Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is game I am keeping an eye on that is coming out Dec 3 on Steam. From their Steam page:

Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is a Horrorpunk Action RPG filled with Lovecraftian horrors and Cronenbergian gore, making it the most gruesome take on the isometric Souls-like genre yet!

Digging deep today, eh? lol

Immortals will be a buy for me in six months when all the DLC is out and I can get the whole package for $15. Ubisoft and their bundles are like clockwork, so, as ever, I wait.

Empire of Sin. Please be good. I want to see Brenda Romero do some more good again.

Second mention of this I've seen today, which tells me maybe I should check it out, but videos show a game I do not want to play. Iso combat should not look so sluggish to me, so I expect I'll hate how it feels to play. That may not be how you feel, but I struggle with these iso Souls-like games because of that.

Yep sound approach, taking a wait and see on Morbid and gameplay.

I am praying that Empire of Sin is as good as it sounds. Just holding off till the first reviews are in.

I was looking for something Viking-y after starting AC Valhalla

Ooooooooooooh

I figured it went more like "ugh, nothing had ever happened this week! Wait, Denmark, I've heard of that country!"

The flight of the first crewed hot-air balloon, the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes in print, and the first publication of "I, Robot" were all robbed!

Been keen for Empire of Sin since I first saw it...but going to wait for some reviews.
