Felix “After Life” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “131st Anniversary of the debut of the first jukebox” week! Invented by Louis Glass, it was displayed in the Palais Royal Saloon in San Francisco. At the time, it had the much catchier name of “the nickel-in-the-slot-phonograph” and could only play one song. We don’t know what the song was because the machine was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906. You may all celebrate by playing a game with a really limited soundtrack.
With Black Friday sales looming large in the US and Canada, it’s all about discounts rather than new releases. The consoles are getting a bunch of PC ports, though. At least those near-empty lists for the PS5 and XBox Series X take the edge off my new-console FOMO. I’ve made it this far in my life without experiencing the wonder of ray tracing—what’s another year or so?
On the Switch, Ponpu is an evolution of the old classic Bomberman—moving around a maze, dropping bombs, and dispatching enemies. It’s got a (take a drink) gorgeous, hand-drawn art style, with a solid single-player campaign, and frenetic multiplayer action. It will release on the other platforms in the coming weeks.
If you’re bored with murder in videogames, then indie roguelike In Celebration of Violence may seem off-putting at first, but at least it announces it intentions up front. It claims influence from The Binding of Isaac and Dark Souls and wants to be difficult (no hand holding!) and obscure (I will tell you only the basic controls and you figure out the rest!). It also gives you the freedom to play how you want—mostly by letting you kill whoever you want. But if you like playing indie games, enjoy trying to break their worlds, then laughing because the dev has anticipated your move and put something in as a nod to you, then you may like this.
Axe Cop is a beat’em-up based on the popular comic, which is part of the burgeoning “adult and child write a story together” genre. If I sound bitter, it’s only because I regret not thinking of monetising storytime with the kids.
Really the only big release of note this week is World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Caveat: I’ve never played WoW myself, but obviously any new expansion is a big deal. Given my non-expertise, WoW veterans know what’s up and don’t need me to explain the details. The refrain for potential new players is the same as with every expansion: there’s never been a better time to jump in. GOTW.

I've been playing Fallout 4 on a Series S (60 fps ftw!). I'll find myself a busted jukebox in your honor, Felix.

Please do!
I've been on a Fallout 4 revival too, trying out mods on PS4. It's been fun -- craftable fusion cores ftw! I kinda think F4 was robbed in GOTD discussions now, but I guess you can only pick 1 out of it and Skyrim.

A new WoW expansion is released and I am not playing it.

I've bounced off it three or four times. I didn't want more Fallout when it came out, I wanted more Elder Scrolls. Instead I ended up playing ESO, which is a good mmo.
Fallout 76 brought me back in, but I think I prefer the deeper sp experience without the survival aspects (ie. food not spoiling).
But, really, the 60 fps makes it much more enjoyable to play. And that's after I dropped another 50 hours into Skyrim on Switch this year.
