The PlayStation 5 is out, and what is a gaming platform for if not gaming?
For those of you lucky enough to have gotten your hands on PlayStation 5 hardware, what are you playing? There are a couple notable platform exclusives. What about backward compatible games? Anything stand out (good or bad) in terms of how they play on the new hardware?

Astro's Playroom is so much better than it has any right to be. Might make it my 3rd Platinum, if I can stop playing Demon's Souls. I cannot keep that GPU song out of my head.
Good idea. It’ll be interesting to hear people’s impressions.
Yes, tell me more about Miles Morales.

That's Kilometers Morales, for all of the Europeans who just got a PS5 yesterday.

That's Miles "Tails Prower" Morales to us Sonic fans.
Days Gone, which I never played on Ps4, seems to *sing* on the Ps5. I might actually play it now.
Tested out the following Ps4 games and they didn't have any issues:
- Burnout: Paradise
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Destiny 2
- Dark Pictures: Little Hope (runs so much better than it's Ps4 counterpart)

Interesting! I want to make a list of games that I am catching up on that I should just wait to play on PS5. I have both Dark Pictures and Days Gone in my pile.
I’m going to give DAYS GONE a go on PS5. Nice to be able to try it out without spending money on it when the odds aren’t in it’s favour. Some The Last of Us fans really like it so there’s a chance it could appeal. The concept of bikers in a zombie apocalypse is solid and I like the look of the main character.
I played some of Days Gone yesterday. It's definitely a solid experience and real nice to get for free via the PS Plus Collection. If you've never had a PS4 that is an awesome collection of games with a good variety and hundreds of hours of gameplay.
Days Gone feel a bit like a marriage of Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us. The kind of zombie open world-game I would like The Last of Us to be.
But it could also need some attention to detail. Where is his flashlight? It looks like it just comes from his body? Some kind of mutation? And how does he speak to Boozer? There's no phone or walkie? Did they steal some military high-end gear?
Other that: Demon's Souls is a marvel. It looks fantastic and probably have the best sword simulation of all the Soulsborne-games.
Days Gone is a far better game than it ever got credit for. The story is actually interesting, the horde fights are a crazy puzzle challenge, and the gameplay itself feels really good.
It didn't reinvent the genre or anything, and I certainly wouldn't put it in my top X games of all time list, but I really enjoyed it for the most part. I also only paid like $15 for it or something, so y'know.
If you use the Ps4 Spider-Man's "Game Upload" feature (which was patched in yesterday) you can download the save on Ps5's Spider-Man Remastered and get all your trophies all over again. I just got another Platinum.

!!!!!!!! Awesome
I'm still trying to wrap up Ghosts of Tsushima and it runs real nice on the PS5, even smoother than it did on my PS4 Pro. Such a gorgeous game. Haven't noticed any issues, it's only been an improvement over playing on PS4.
Astro's Playroom is such a fantastic game. Not a fantastic pack in game... just a fantastic game. Yes it's a bit on the short side but the entire experience was pure joy and such a great showcase of what the controller can do.
I really wanted to try a racing game with the DualSense so I picked up WRC 9. I remember playing some WRC game on the PS2 I think and fell in love with it, so between that and hearing that WRC put the triggers to better use than DIRT I decided to go with the more focused experience of WRC. I'm a casual racing game fan: love Gran Turismo but mostly for racing consumer cars and not the crazy super cars, love the Burnout games, enjoy the occasional rally racing game, thought Test Drive Unlimited was brilliant. But there are plenty of racing games I don't enjoy or just completely avoid. WRC 9 takes me back very much to the WRC game I played back in the day. Visually the game isn't that stunning, it looks nice but I'm not sure it really shows off the PS5 much. The controller usage is pretty cool though, the feedback you get especially through the triggers really does help you "feel" the road and the car. I suspect something like Gran Turismo will do even more with the triggers but I like what WRC does as a first attempt. Game itself is pretty straight forward rally racing with some sim management stuff between races which I like. You get crew members with different specialities that unlock various things and help you mange your car repairs between races. It's just enough to give you something to do without feeling overwhelmed, and there's plenty you can let the game take care of for you if you don't feel like deep diving in. So overall I'm pretty pleased with it.
The little bit of Miles Morales that I've played seemed fantastic, the opening sequence was super fun. Holding off on that until I wrap up Tsushima though. Also briefly tried the opening of Dragon Souls. Stunning looking game that I'll likely never play any more of
If I find some time I'm going to revisit some PS4 favorites and see how they hold up.
I've now played Demons Souls for a couple of hours, Astro's Playroom for around an hour & started Miles Morales just before bed last night. I'm enjoying all of them.
Astro is continually surprising. I was on the jungle level were they introduce the monkey suit, using the motion controls & triggers to climb up a wall Nathan Drake style & swing on monkey bars. It comes across initially as a little gimmicky but my goodness once you get going & a handle on the control method its a joy.
The way it works is the R2 & L2 triggers are your right & left hand. Hold one to grab a climbing hold, then tilt the Dual Sense the opposite direction to reach up with your opposite hand to the next grip. I've gotten really fast & efficient at doing it.
The swing on the monkey bars requires you to tilt the controller up & down to accumulate speed & then you let go of the triggers to fly upwards towards the next bar or climbing hold. The cool thing is the motion control can move you in mid air. Its a lot of fun.
Further on ahead you get a bow with a little plunger arrow, the motion control aiming is very accurate & combined with the right analogue stick it feels like you can hone your aiming to perfection. I really hope Horizon Forbidden West uses this.
On Miles Morales I started on fidelity mode just to see how it looked/felt. I then switched to performance mode (60 fps) after swinging around the city a bit, it really does feel a night & day difference much like Demons Souls. The first mission is a cool set piece style chase with Miles & Peter teaming up. Getting back into the combat didn't take too long at all, I just need to get used to combining the web attacks, slinging towards enemies & attacking with the environmental furniture a bit more fluidly.
On Demons Souls I've opened up the huge door to the first boss. I've died about 4 or 5 times on the journey there by silly things. Once I fell off the big staircase (that you go down in the starting area to open up the shortcut) & got caught at the bottom of the stairs by about 5 dreggling's with flame swords in a tight confined space. I didn't have a chance to get roll or dodge out of the way. I fell to my death another time, stood beside explosive barrels when an enemy threw a fire bomb at me & I think I got killed by the two spear enemies. I probably should level up a bit even though my skill level is much improved from the PS3 version.

Its reputation has changed over the year after it released. You'll see that they no longer drop it down to $15 on sale every sale because word of mouth turned around in its favor.
Bend deserves a lot of credit for the work they put into it in the year after launch.
I'm a casual racing game fan:...
I got into race car simulators at the beginning of the years as a first. I kind of built up to it over the years and thought racing games would be much more fun with a wheel. They are. I played more Dirt Rally 2.0 than probably any other game.
And here's what I wanted to add. Just plugged my Logitech Wheel into the PS5 and it was running with no problems at all and I was drifting corners again.
So far, Sony's doing ok with the backwards compatibility-thing.

Oh! The motion control aiming from Splatoon was one of my favourite aspects. The immediacy. The precision. I'm glad to see it make the leap across.
I think I remember shoulder button climbing in a Donkey Kong game. It was certainly a different approach to set things apart. I think on the DS? This sounds much more refined, though.
It's good to hear they've went with creativity for how to play. I was worried it would be all adaptive trigger and rumble, which I'll probably turn off (if possible) to reduce strain and fatigue.

It is something I feel much more than I see. I can't always identify 30 verses 60 from footage. Controller in hand, though, proves to be a significant contrast. Or else placebo boosts my performance.
Thanks for the feedback. Sounds plenty good!

I always remember people talking about the motion control aiming in Splatoon & thinking how could that be as accurate as just using the analogue stick, now I know :p
Flip I didn't actually know a Donkey Kong had a climbing mechanic like that, I do enjoy having to keep the R2 or L2 held down to keep one (or both) hands holding the climbing hold. If you've ever tried that Grow Home its very similar mechanically from what I can remember. It feels like there's a bit of skill required.
I think there's strong, medium & weak settings in the settings for the Dual Sense along with the 'off' option, so at least you'll be able to tailor it one way or the other should you eventually get a PS5.

Totally agree, I usually can't tell from watching video footage with the 30fps v 60fps but in your hand its instantly noticeable. It makes sense considering the higher framerate basically means your button presses get represented onscreen twice as fast, making your actions feel more responsive & immediate. RDR 2 needs this badly
Astroneer had very long initial load times on my PS4 Pro, and now loads a ton faster on PS5 (from external PS4 compatible storage). It must have been CPU bound, as they say, since I'm not even loading it off the internal hard drive. The most recent big Astroneer patch also made it run a lot better on PS4 that it used to.
Astros playroom is brilliant. Just a fantastic showcase of the Dualsense and all it can do.
Haven't played anything else yet, but I got several of the PS+ collection downloading. Since I had the PS4 slim and not pro, even playing some of the games I already had will be more fun now. With so many free things to try right now I think I've changed my mind on Demon's Souls. Going to go ahead and grab Miles Morales and then wait for Christmas gift cards or something to buy DS. No sense starting a PS5 pile this year.
Are we only posting PS4 game updates like infinity just did, where we have actually played on PS4 and have a frame of reference? Or is there any value for "new to me" PS4 game impressions here?

Man, I wish I could remember where I saw or read about control accuracy, but if I recall M&K came out on top (shocking) with Gyro aiming a close second. Sticks were not close to Gyro or M&K.
Shoot the pointer/motion aiming in RE4 and Metroid Prime on Wii was the best version of those games.
Timely - I’ve been playing Ghost of Tsushima on PS5. I never got around to it on PS4 so this seemed like a good spot to start.
I was completely blown away with how good it looked and the instant load times. I wondered if it was such a juggernaut on PS4, but turns out the PS5 version really cranks:

It’s fun too, though I am awful at it. It feels like a game you can take less seriously, but doing so will get your killed a lot.
On a separate note, I wanted to see how Control ran, since it really strained my launch PS4. It took three tries for the install (PS4 disc) to take. I kept getting an error message, “can’t install,” and no further info at the system level or the support page. I got the same error on the third attempt, but hitting “resume” on the error straightened it out.
Here’s hoping Sony gets this kind of glitchiness worked out by the time Comcast starts their data cap here in April >:/
Played a bit of Modern Warfare (2019) and there’s no difference between PS4 and 5, to my eyes.
The crazy thing about Ghost of Tsushima is the load times were already unbelievably fast on the PS4; they're only somewhat improved on the PS5. Sucker Punch worked some kind of black magic there.
The 60 fps frame rate, though, is exclusive to the PS5, and it's amazing.
Yeah, Ghost of Tsushima is fantastic on the PS5. Finally beat the game the other night and I'm glad I got to experience a good chunk of it on PS5. Not that it doesn't play great on PS4 but the 60 fps really does just make it feel so smooth.
Played a bit more Sackboy last night and it's pretty fun. Feels like a bit of a mix between LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. The platforming is significantly improved from LittleBigPlanet with jumping feeling far less floaty and the controls overall much more tight. I've only played four or five levels so far but there was one that had me smiling the entire time, was just a ton of fun to play through. They do a good job hiding a lot of the collectibles, it's easy to miss things when you just run through a level the first time.
My only significantly complaint so far is that there are some areas that require at least two players to get through, and it seems like some of those are mixed into levels as well as having standalone coop-only levels. I don't mind the standalone ones but it'd be nice if it were more clear in-level when something requires coop so I don't spent too much time trying to figure out something that I'll never be able to solve solo!
I think Sackboy would stand out more if Astrobot weren't included with the system. It doesn't quite have the charm and polish that Astrobot does but it feels like a solid 3D platformer and coop will be a nice addition for those that want it. If you like 3D platformers it seems like there's enough here to enoy.

Don't tease me. I like platformers in general but I loathed LBP for it's crap jumping and controls. Be nice if the series was actually fun now.
Same as hell. Love everything about LBP right up until touching the controls.
Well, I got my PS5 all set up and configured last night, and of course the first thing I did was fire up Astro's Playroom. My 20yo daughter and I passed the controller back and forth to each other over the course of a couple of hours, and finished all four sections, plus the boss. The whole time I was reminiscing about all of the various Artifacts we found and showing her some neat things about them, as well as gleefully pointing out all of the hidden (and not-so-hidden) references to PS games of yore. Holy forking shirtballs, that's an amazing free pack-in game. Definitely feels like a love letter from Sony to Sony, in a totally awesome not-creepy way.
There are so many games I keep thinking, maybe I’ll buy that and play it over Christmas but then think I should wait and play it on a PS5 whenever I finally decide to get one. Ghost of Tsushima is high on that list.
