RIP Sir Sean Connery

That's sad. I really liked him.

Damn. So many great movies and characters.

Pluto TV has a Bond channel. Free and easy.

RIP

He didn't translate well into modern times, but he was a great actor and an interesting man. Apparently he once smacked around and disarmed Johnny Stompanato.

While I think he was the best Bond, I can't get past that Barbara Walters interview where he reiterated his opinion that smacking women is okay, and in the process looked like he was about to haul off and belt Barbara.

I grew up watching Sean Connery as Bond. My grandfather loved those movies. We became more comfortable over that common ground. We didn't quite get each other. The generational divide, I guess. Anyway. Sean Connery as Bond bridged that divide. No one was cooler. We both agreed!

I also recall, quite fondly, Sean Connery in The Rock, and in Entrapment. Then there's the Highlander movies, and the Indiana Jones movies. Finding Forrester. And as it turns out I've never saw The Untouchables. We'll be viewing a few such Connery movies and revelling in the nostalgia.

RIP

I came here to say something similar.

I believe he said something along the lines of never having met a woman who didn't need slapping from time to time.

It raise the age old issue about the extent to which we can and should separate the artist from art. I have no answer.

EDIT: Snopes have created a page containing chapter and verse on Connery's views on hitting women. It contains allegations from a pervious partner of his about an assault he made on her.

On balance....? Good riddance to the woman-beater, and his antediluvian attitudes.

I was saddened to read about Sean Connery a few days ago.
my first three thoughts upon reading about his death were
1. awww man, another of the great actors have left us
2. f....ing 2020 can't end soon enough
3. I remember reading how Sean Connery passed up on Lord of the Rings as Gandalf and was one the main reasons he finally retired from acting.

That's the first I've heard about LOTR. He seems a bad fit for that role or for, say, Dumbledore. Dunno, he's too masculine or something.

That was my reaction as well. I love Ian McKellan in the role, but I also don't see Sean Connery for the role at all.

But a few execs did, at the tune of 450 BAJILLION DOLLARS.

Also, the Disney Story was great.
I'm going to google about fun Sean Connery stories and see what I can find.

Connery passed on the role because he didn't understand it. That was why he took League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He saw what he missed out on and didn't understand that role either so he thought that would be another fantastic franchise. Oh well.

McKellen was apparently very frustrated by filming LOTR, because they had to do these really weird shots to get the heights correct. For instance, in the wagon when he's riding with Frodo, Elijah is sitting about six feet further away from the camera.

This made it very hard to act, in the sense of seeing other characters and reacting to them; an awful lot of the Gandalf role was proclaiming things to the empty space on his left or right, with the other actor well behind him. This really frustrated and upset him. He didn't think it was proper acting.

I can't help but think that Connery would not have done well, and that the movie as a whole would have been badly impaired. I think the role ended up generating $450 million in (hypothetical) royalties because he didn't take it.

Acting to empty space? It's like being on a Star Wars movie with Hayden Christiansen!
