Welcome folks, and happy “139th Anniversary of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral” week! It’s one of the most famous gunfights of America’s Wild West era. Doc Holliday and the Earps were arrested for murder, but not indicted, and the trial put a lot of versions of the story on the record. You may all celebrate by playing a game with a shootout mechanic, but if you draw too early, it turns into a Phoenix Wright game.

Watch Dogs: Legion will have you hacking, stealthing, driving, punching, and shooting your way around a near-future, open-world London. That’s an already impressive, if standard, list of game systems. But the big selling point is its “play as anyone” feature: all those NPCs you usually zoom past in open-world games aren’t just there to scream at you—they have their own stats, abilities, associations with other NPCs, and voice actor. That office worker on the corner may be a bomb specialist. You can recruit them, usually by doing a task related to the person’s contacts. For instance, you might track down a friend of the bomb specialist who tells you that they have a gambling debt. If you can make the debt go away (one way or another), the bomb specialist will join you.

Once they’re recruited, you can play as them and use their special skills. Construction workers can summon a drone that’s big enough to stand on and fly you around, cops have a baton and stun gun, and I haven’t seen yet what the biker or cowboy can do. In a lavish touch, they’re each fully-voiced during gameplay and cutscenes. You’ll end up having a roster of dozens of these folks and can switch between them at nearly any time. I’m not sure how character progression works, but they can perma-die.

Who said innovation in open-world games is dead? This recruitment system incorporates and builds on ideas from Metal Gear Solid V, GTA V and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. It's a technical achievement on its own, let alone as part of an already system-heavy Ubi game. It’s intriguing enough that Watch Dogs: Legion will be the first game in the series that I actually play. GOTW.

Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues is a beat’em-up tie-in to the TV series, because that’s what Netflix does now. Ghostrunner is a first-person, cyberpunk, ninja parkour game with Titanfall-style wallrunning and a cool sword. Otherwise, there’s a bunch of remastered Double Fine classics on Xbox, including Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, which are well worth a visit or revisit. Don’t be afraid to look up a walkthrough if you get stuck.

Watch Dogs: Legion is a for sure get for me at some point. I have a feeling I'll be waiting until Christmas to play it. Anyway, Clint Hocking finally releasing a new game is something I'm happy for and Legion looks to put a twist on the Ubi formula.

A couple other things on my radar include Mad Rat Dead, Nippon Ichi's latest attempt to do something interesting outside of Disgaea and failing over and over again but this time it's a rhythm platformer, which is laudable.

Oceanhorn 2 is a Zelda-like that brings more colorful 3D Zelda-like gameplay.

The Dark Pictures - Little Hope is hopefully good, unlike the original Dark Pictures release in Man of Medan, which was lukewarmly received. None of these Dark Pictures games will likely hit the highs of Until Dawn, but that's to be expected on a fraction of the budget. Perhaps cinematic games like these (do we have a proper genre definition?) require the high end budget and acting to deliver something truly special. Or they need to cleverly use real life acting on a tight budget a la Her Story. The Dark Pictures games may fall unfortunately be doomed to failure if a big budget is required. I'm hopeful though because Little Hope so far looks better than Man of Medan.

Definitely getting Watch Dogs: Legion...just not for a while. Wait for the Series X to arrive probably.
